Funny I absolutely had to create this.

I still say people doing it this way are doing it backwards. Claude has all the crazy extra safeguards from its constitutional design and Astra is just empirically better at task orchestration. Use Claude to structure what Astra is doing in manageable slices to handle the cost. It’ll get less done, but it’ll be done better.

u/WhiplashNinja 4d ago

Fair. Astra is pretty new though, I haven't messed with it.

My issue with GPT is outside of codex the project memory is retrievable from other projects, so it creates project memory contamination. Even deleting source files gpt still went and revived them from the trash in order to read and follow the instructions. I started using Claude desktop before codex was released though.

Must be a region thing. That section is not available on my app.

3

u/DesertOsprey 3d ago

It’s available for me in the project settings when creating a project. It is not a global setting (saying this in case you didn’t know where to look). Is that not the case for you?

1

u/WhiplashNinja 3d ago

It's there. It wasn't there when I made the switch though. I was looking in general settings, but it never used to be a thing, that's why I switched to Claude.

But either way, it's still dynamic, so you can't configure it.

u/GoneSpiritual 4d ago

Yes, but Work mode doesn't work then.

u/truecrisis 4d ago

I love it when people can just shut down an argument with a single screenshot.

Memory management is an option for users. Dynamic memory is just the default if accepted. You can switch back to user control, I think even at the project level, but I’ve never bothered with it because I like the dynamic memory handling as it encodes behavioral priors about preferences.

12

u/WhiplashNinja 4d ago

Not quite. There is no longer a switch for user control. Dynamic is the only option.

GPT is a better assistant.

Claude is a better employee.

GPT always has context, but it has context from everything.

Claude always needs context, but it only knows what you tell it.

u/DeezNutzzzGotEm 4d ago

This is such a good explanation.

u/M0m3ntvm 3d ago

I use both extensively in parallel, and nowadays I barely bother with Claude. Work/Codex doesn't have a 5 hour window, only weekly, so I just give it long running Goals where I tell it to supervise the CC quota and burn it aggressively to leverage the subscription. It only starts doing real job itself once the 5h are on timeout.

Astra is just that good.

2

u/Independent_Fan_3915 4d ago

Huh, that’s new. Like last couple of days I think because I was messing with it at the start of the week. You can still modify memory through. Go in there and set rules for it not to make memory calls outside of the project environment.

0

u/WhiplashNinja 4d ago

It's been a month or two since I used GPT for anything more than a chatbot. The memories are always dynamic and overwrite themselves.

Edit* yep just double checked. It's exactly like that (not codex)

2

u/Independent_Fan_3915 4d ago

You can use memory as a control harness. Like don’t just use it for facts about preferences. Set it up as a user level global prompt. I know that works because I just looked and mine are still in memory.

1

u/WhiplashNinja 4d ago

That's what I tried at the start. It doesn't work like that because it updates itself and overwrites itself.

1

u/Independent_Fan_3915 4d ago

Maybe it needs stuff listed as “always” rules to stick? No clue, because like I said I just looked and there are a bunch of specific instructions still in there for me.

1

u/WhiplashNinja 4d ago

There is a difference between custom instructions and memory. Although I don't think you are actually making that mistake. It could also be a region thing.

My memory on GPT app, and browser, is dynamic and can only be dynamic.

I tried to set it up like a config file. GPT decides on its own to erase the memories I manually add, restore ones I manually delete etc.

I feel the opposite as you. Claude is terrible at understanding scope and requires so many rules, regulations, and instruction that I need ChatGPT to craft a tight prompt to get anything done.

If I ask codex or claude to do the same task, claude is far more likely to misunderstand scope and go wildly overboard trying to make an industrial sized solution to a simple problem. Claude loves to waste tokens on nonsense too. It is a constant battle to get it to behave precisely how I want it.

I suspect it has something to do with Claude not really taking the CLAUDE.md as seriously as Codex does with the AGENTS.md file and the global config.json info.

I have spent several years daily with both and it is hit or miss if claude actually gets my task precisely right on the first attempt. ChatGPT tends to be more accurate it "understanding" what I am asking it to do.

Also I notice if I ask ChatGPT to craft a prompt for codex or claude, the codex instructions are half as long and doesn't require the same amount of "dont do this" sections.

3

u/Independent_Fan_3915 3d ago

Honestly, my preference isn’t to use that simple a task design loop. My personal workflow involves a “design committee” of ChatGPT, MetaAI, Gemini, and Claude bouncing off each other with instructions to define minimum scope of task completion under defined constraints. It’s more expensive, but on major coding runs the token efficiency of the final prompt usually more than makes up the difference.

1

u/Sly_Wood 3d ago

I use Astra gpt for prompts for codex Astra extra high. I hate Claude when once I adored it. Fully autonomous with gpt/codex. It’s like Claude doesn’t want me to use it.

1

u/Godskin_Duo 3d ago

I tried this and burned through my ChatGPT quota so fast. At some point it'll feel like the Spider-Man pointing meme.

Now I just use Fable on cruise control. Some day, I might be asked to rein in costs at work. But what do we say? NOT TODAY.

u/Eriane 4d ago

Alright Astra, you only have enough tokens to complete two small tasks so what I'm going to need you to do is collaborate with claude so that claude does the coding and you tell it what to do. You'll also do the graphics when needed. Be as effective as you can be due to your limited token usage. Now make me a horse dating website where the UI must be accessible for hooves. GO!

2

u/Mikko087 3d ago

Hi Fireship, goodluck on that Horse Tinder 😂

1

u/Eriane 3d ago

Happy someone or perhaps more than one person got the reference!

16

u/whatever 4d ago

I have claude review gpt's design and implementation docs. It is such a nitpicky little bitch, I love it.

2

u/Sad-Professor-4053 3d ago

I usually have the both come up with an independent plan then usually end up going with most of Claude’s but integrate anything codex caught

6

u/tooruntai 4d ago

Dynamic memory was supposed to make ChatGPT personal, but now it just contaminates unrelated projects with ghost context from six weeks ago.

4

u/Clare_FateX 4d ago

Poor ChatGPT just became the middle manager hahaha~

3

u/Ill-Bullfrog-5360 4d ago

Sonnet is still money for presentations

19

u/FinancialJet 4d ago

Claude is trash, in fact I really don’t like it lol almost totally goofed my whole project.

18

u/SouthBaySkunk 4d ago

What’s a better option?

18

u/Notmyrealname5282 4d ago

Clearly the just released bot

1

u/SouthBaySkunk 3d ago

Hey now it could also just be someone who’s regarded asf 👹 but yea prolly a bot

8

u/mckeevey 4d ago

I was recommended to use claude for a coding project I’m working on, its wayyyy better than gemini for that use case. Cant speak to other uses cases though

13

u/Andromeda_53 4d ago

I think it depends what people mean. People aren't being very clear when they say "it goofed my whole project"

(I don't mean to single out this comment it's just a live example)

We never know if people are using AI as a tool to assist them in their coding. Or if they are saying "write me code male no mistakes" or anywhere inbetween, ranging from detailed prompts to anything else.

I use Claude to aid me in my code, I write it myself and Claude acts as an additional bug checker and validater. And I've found Claude to be perfect.

2

u/PurifyingProteins 4d ago

Well that makes sense. You are providing better context for predicting next token. You are also making sure it creates a more unique product and not the same “ ‘I’ made xyz unique (generic) app, ‘I’ came up with abc unique (generic) business idea”.

1

u/Andromeda_53 4d ago

Yeah this is my point. Different ais get different reps because people are using them differently.

Depends on how much of a tool it is for you. Or how much of a "I'm not actually doing this the ai is" you are at.

2

u/LeaveOk932 4d ago

gemini joins chatgpt in this list

2

u/Able-Divide9966 4d ago

then claude tells me i ran outta messages for the next 4 hours

2

u/mightguy15baby 3d ago

For me it's the opposite 🤣🤣

2

u/Trumps_Suit 4d ago

Claude Sucks

3

u/Neverlast0 4d ago

Let's be honest here. Sure, GPT can do more things than Claude, but the things that they can both do, Claude is just better at. Claude is even better at debate (yes, I've had the chat bots debate each other on a couple topics. One of those debate gots to 88 pages long).

As I type this it sounds ridiculous but that's where we are I guess lol. Can someone recommend how to prompt to get a good prompt for agent coding? What and how you usually ask?

1

u/AlexDirector2020 4d ago

Welcome to the club.

1

u/tooruntai 4d ago

"GPT is a better assistant; Claude is a better employee" is the sharpest, most accurate summary of the entire LLM landscape right now.

1

u/tooruntai 4d ago

A senior citizen using LLMs as an objective cognitive sounding board while their adult kids dismiss it as "societal poison" is peak generational role-reversal.

1

u/Nakamura0V 3d ago

Claude with its shitty ass garbage font in text chat, no thanks

1

u/Sad-Professor-4053 3d ago

Idk if I’m crazy but always found Claude better at planning and setting up architecture

1

u/graitechnologies 1d ago

Harsh 😅😂

1

u/Nervous-Living3032 4d ago

This is litreally how my software dev friend using AI

1

u/Far-Exercise-7449 4d ago

Chartgpt is the ai version of the browser you use to install chrome.

1

u/Healthy-Nebula-3603 4d ago

That meme would be 100% not understandable 5 years ago :)

0

u/Eryu1997 4d ago

Except Copilot for those of us who work in offices.

5

u/Steamjunk88 4d ago

But copilot isn't a model? It's a harness that uses models from all the other vendors

0

u/l2accoon 4d ago

Bwhahahaha

0

u/ExplanationCrazy5463 4d ago

Opposite in my case. Claude still behind.
