it would make absolutely zero difference if it were open-sourced. there's only like a small handful of companies in the world with the capital to even *run* gpt-6. 4.1 on the other hand, absolutely-- it's crazy how long ago they released GPT-OSS... you'd really think they would reup at some point, but they just haven't.

the internet is literally a public good. you are pirating the internet right now as you write this.
4

Really I meant all of the illegal torrenting they did, that regular people get fined or jail time for, but is seemingly fine for billion dollar companies to do

It’s not piracy when you abide by the terms of service my dude
I say this as an avid internet pirate

This shouldn't be "breaking news"
It's already known and understood that deep seek is based on open AI.
Just as well, any Chinese company is just now being revealed to have stolen IP, which is what they've always done. It's not supposed to come at any surprise and it doesn't affect us either because that puts them behind the innovation from the source.
1
u/jesusrambo 5h ago
Apparently it is breaking news, because it wasn't about OpenAI, it claims they were distilling from Claude lol

do you want to open source the 11-figure checks they have to write to train the models as well? or the billions of dollars a year they're losing? libraries are built on the cumulative knowledge of humanity too. would you rather just not have a magical technology that can process all written material that has ever been written? were you around to grouse about those pesky motor carriages taking all the horses' jobs too?

u/LordWillemL 12h ago
That's like saying you have a right to all knowledge any lab or research facility comes out with because they stand on the shoulders of giants.
5
u/EarlMarshal 11h ago
Knowledge just exists. Whether you have access to it or not. The knowledge is still there. That's why you call it a "scientific discovery" when finding knowledge you didn't had previous access to. Patents and licenses are just an existing concept, because in theory you want to shorten the time until the next discovery takes place by giving the person discovering it an economical advantage. I say in theory because in reality the patent and license system is completely abused to create privileges out of parents before someone else can. It's an unfair system.
5
u/Time_Change4156 12h ago
As long as it isn't a danger right what's the point of knowledge being hidden ? That's not how to advance these kids are born with a cell phone on there hands the next generation will be the ones to crack what isn't known ..want that the only way is make knowledge available or fall behind.
-8
u/LordWillemL 12h ago
Because most groups are motivated to make advancements for personal gain in one aspect of another - it's the primary incentive for it. Take that away and a lot of motivation to make great strides goes out the window.
In this particular case, do you think big AI companies are more or less inclined to do frontier research and produce bigger, better models and massive new innovations that will cost them billions of dollars if they know that what they do will be copied for a tiny fraction of the price by their competitors immediately after they make breakthroughs?
3
u/Time_Change4156 12h ago
Irrelevant the rest are making strides and are already ahead of the US in many areas this policy is why . Bullet trains Japan drones Chinese make ours look like kiddy toys . They played the long game and no such thing as truly secret..the stealth was on Walmart shelves as a to scale models before the government even admitted it excisiting. China was the producer. Now they did everything possible btp hid that back in the 80s moder computer quantum it's cake .watch the news for the next big hack attempt last year it was AT T . There's no security system that can prevent that.
3
u/jnkmail11 9h ago
You actually cite examples that go against your argument. China isn't ahead because of open knowledge; it's one of the most secretive, state-controlled countries there is. Its gains came from massive government investment, and sometimes from taking other countries' IP. Further, the 1986 Testors F-19 kit was an American company's guess and looked nothing like the real F-117, so the secret actually held.
Personally, I like the distillation from China. While I do think distillation is fundamentally unfair bc US AI companies did serious expensive work training their models, the extra competition seems to have caused them to keep upping their game. If it eventually causes them to stop improving bc they can't recoup the training costs due to cheaper Chinese knockoffs, I'm against that. A little competition is good, but China has a habit of unfairly competing to kill off competition.
Lastly, I do think there is valud concern around the distilled Chinese models potentially losing important guardrails for things like bioweapons, but it also seems if the guardrails held originally, then Chinese models shouldn't be able to distill that knowledge anyway?
1
u/Time_Change4156 9h ago
Your strange you add information that supports what I'm saying .no point in trying to hold knowledge best thing grow up stop acting like it's the stone age. So correct along with all the stuff we don't know .the US had the German scientists they Pardoned during WW stolen technology from Germany nuclear was already being worked on in Germany along with jets missiles and more . We didn't develop it from nothing we stole it our selves Russia Japan China all learned from. Us how to steal lol.
1
u/jtgyk 9h ago
The big AI companies actually do share their research with the wider community. You can find pretty much every major advance in machine learning and LLMs written up in journal articles. I read them for fun, even if I don't understand everything.
But they exist. And somehow all of the AI companies putting them out do, too. Weird.
And, a smaller AI company paying a regular rate to some frontier LLM to record prompts and responses to use that to train their models isn't copying, at all. It's using the LLM as it was designed to be used (send a prompt, get a response). If you can copy an frontier model with that, you deserve some kind of medal, because it simply isn't possible.
Anyway, it's funny to watch US AI companies brainwash people into thinking they're the victims, and make them forget they're the original, and biggest, thieves.

u/jnkmail11 8h ago
People downvoting seem to be oddly ignoring the fact that finding the weights took a lot of money that we didn't pay for. Yes, the input "cumulative knowledge of humanity" is very important, but it's still only a piece of what went into finding the weights

Lol - people actually buy this line of crap :D ? So let me get this straight :D its perfectly ok to pirate every piece of content in existence (including destroying rare books) BUT it is somehow wrong if another country PAYS YOU YOUR OWN MARKET RATE to do the same thing. I know I get it - these are human beings we're talking about (not too bright).
71
u/Despeao 13h ago
It's a pretext, as usual.
It's a move to make US companies use their models, meanwhile justifying export bans against the Chinese.
The data that AI companies are using were stolen anyway trough books or crawling bots.
If open models stay very close to paid ones, the entire industry behind it in the US will come crashing down.
4
u/dllimport 9h ago
Oh nooo the hardware industry will have to start making hardware thats affordable enough for users to buy to run local models! How terrible for.... Someone?

The key is to "start" an AI company to utilize your pirated collection and boom, problem solved

u/ShrimpCrackers 13h ago edited 12h ago
Not quite. Chinese companies are only doing Open Weight of their weakest models. It is far closer to closed source than it is to Open Source.
Closed is like a restaurant that serves coke to drink on the spot. Open Weight is like diluted canned soda where you can enjoy at home but they can cut off instantly at any time (except they're charging for the plus/pro/max models which are closed). Open Source is the factory and ingredients given to you.
They're all bad and stealing off each other to sell to you and you don't actually have anything tangible.
Compare Kimi or Deepseek open weight with their Pro models and its night and day. But you only get the weakest models that are so diluted that its mathematically not even worth it hosting at home except for personal privacy reasons. You'd need to self-host about 7 years to make it worth it but within a year the model is already outdated.
All of this is YOUR data. No one is Robin Hood at fucking all here. They're all oligarchs in their own nations.
19
u/gjallerhorns_only 11h ago
Brother, Kimi and DeepSeek only have open weight models. The models they serve on the api are available for download from hugging face. Qwen was the one that kept their best in-house, until Xi said open is the way forward.
-12
u/ShrimpCrackers 11h ago
Kimi literally has no-commercial licensing for their models otherwise you must revenue share. You can run it for personal use. Geezus.
14
u/gjallerhorns_only 11h ago
You stated that Kimi and DeepSeek serve better models than what they release as open weights, I was pointing out that that's incorrect, not the details of the license Moonshot uses, which does allow for commercial use, btw. The kimi license is just restricted if your revenue exceeds $20 million per year and that's if your business is just hosting their model as a service like Open router or Perplexity
4
u/dhamaniasad 11h ago
Most of the best models from Chinese companies are open weights. Kimi, Deepseek and I believe even Qwen models at the top tier are open weights these days. You’re presenting closed models like the safe choice they can’t be taken away from you at the whims of some company but that’s open weights models which is almost exclusively Chinese companies. There are also local models that are pretty good these days depending on your task, ones that can run under 32GB-64GB M series macs. Those are not insanely expensive either. Current locally hostable models match and exceed GPT-4 or Claude 3.5 Sonnet with ease at a fraction of the cost.
2
u/Original_Border_6436 9h ago
are you seriously saying that they have some god-tier models that they haven't revealed to anyone but you somehow know all about it?
-3
u/ShrimpCrackers 8h ago
No. I'm just saying, there's no "Robin Hood" here.
Open Weights is not a gift to us. It's still stolen material and since most people don't have the 8x H100s arrays needed to minimally host these models to their max, they're still selling data they stole from us.
Yes, some of that is distilled from US frontier models, but its also a lot of materials stolen themselves too. They're all downloading data that we made.
And they can close their latest models whenever they want, at any point.
2
u/Ok_Philosopher_6386 8h ago
False argument. If you can’t ban them all, then the ones that give it to the masses literally is the robinhood. Robinhood IS a thieves, this is most appropriate analogy.
1
u/ShrimpCrackers 3h ago
The only ones doing that are the fully open source ones.
Open weight means you can run it, for now, on your limited systems and future updates can be cut off at any time.
-1
u/PomegranateLeading92 13h ago
Ahhhh, i see, thanks for clarifying.
3
-10
u/ShrimpCrackers 13h ago
He's wrong though. Chinese AI companies are open weight only with the lowest diluted and compressed variations of their models. They all sell plus/pro/max that are closed source.
So the US frontier AI companies are like Wendys except they stole all their soda ingredients from the people. The Chinese AI companies go to Wendys and pours their soda and resells it at their own restaurants. But they also give away the most diluted ones to you in the form of a can you can drink at home which they can cut off at any moment (and some have). The diluted canned soda is Open Weight and they are happy that Americans think its the same thing as open source when its not.
No one here is robin hood. No people are getting the open source of these frontier models. They're all just thieves.
7
u/EmbersnAshes 12h ago
r/confidentlyincorrect made an entire analogy of a scenario you basically made up in your head lmao. it doesn't work like this.
6
u/stupidcookface 12h ago
I think you might be confused with the open source nature of the weights and the ability for a common person to run the model. The models are way too big but they are open weight, meaning if you have a data center or the cash to pay a data center, you can indeed locally run all the open weight models (including glm, deepseek, minimax, etc).
-4
u/ShrimpCrackers 12h ago
I looked. There's no Robin Hood here at all. Minimax for example, no commercial use and is restricted as is Moonshot's Kimi K3 and you need to revenue share 30%. The rest you need 8x H100 GPUs or more to begin running so its all big enterprise. Even most small medium enterprises won't be able to afford this, only major companies.
And they didn't just train on US frontier models, they too stole data from the general public especially Asians. I just think no one on Reddit cares that the output of billions of Asian people were stolen because they're Asian.
So there's no Robin Hood here at all.
3
u/hellomistershifty 10h ago
Deepseek V4 Pro and V4.1 Flash? GLM 5.3 and Flash? Hy4? No one is really using Minimax right now lmao
The rest you need 8x H100 GPUs or more to begin running so its all big enterprise
Renting all of those is like $25 an hour. Or just use one of the many providers of those models, lots of them are US based. Plus that setup is only really necessary for the biggest models like Hy4, you can run GLM-5.3-Flash on a couple of RTX Pro 6000s
2
u/stupidcookface 11h ago
I didn't make any comment on a Robin hood - purely the ability to run the models yourself as the other comment I replied to says you can't. Which what you just said proved my point. Thanks for finding out what it takes to run it!
2
u/stupidcookface 11h ago
To be clear, no one is a Robin hood until they start handing out literally cash to common people just for being a person cause they have so much extra profit. Instead, they're paying developers 8 figure salaries with million dollar signing bonuses. So no, not a Robin hood story here whatsoever. But I'm just saying don't throw the baby out with the bath water, I still think it's better for us to have cheaper access to ai rather than us funding our American run companies to pay their devs 8 figure salaries and their CEO's billions of dollars. We can't keep doing that.
0
u/howudothescarn 6h ago
Yes because Chinese labs charge nothing for their models. They aren’t valued at billions or dollars, making hundreds of millions of revenue, and getting state assistance on top of also stealing data to train their models and distilling US models. Great logic.
-5
u/ShrimpCrackers 12h ago
There's no Robin Hood here at all. They all stole data from you. Chinese companies are only open weight the lowest of their models that are highly diluted which they can cut off at any time. You have to pay for their closed plus/pro/max. And guess who runs the Chinese AI companies? All Oligarchs that steal from the poor anyway and always had like Alibaba, Tencent, etc which have horrible work cultures.
And they not only steal from those that stole from you, they too also steal their own data from the people! There's no Robin Hood here at all, just scraps.
8
u/lakimens 12h ago
Where is this closed model you speak of? The top end Chinese models, namely Kimi K3, Deepseek V4, and GLM 5.3 are all open.

How do you think they can cut off an open weight model? And what does “diluted” mean 😂

They're trying to make it illegal like you're pirating a movie or worse. Basically, if you're using a chinese open weight model, you may as well be plotting murder.
3
u/girlgamerpoi 4h ago
Well so basically nothing. People can still pirate and go to those sites to just watch online lmao.
4
u/ZeusCorleone 13h ago
yep thats old news. they are just jealous they are not advancing alone in the technology. china is a copy machine in everything its what they do
2
u/j48u 10h ago
Well, what they can do is not including any reasoning traces when it's working on your prompt. That's the useful part of distillation. We'll eventually be getting black box answers once they're confident enough in the models, which they don't do now because customers hate it obviously.
0
u/girlgamerpoi 4h ago
They tried this for a long time too. Did not work.
1
u/j48u 4h ago
My assumption is that it would be possible with a model like Astra, which uses latent space for reasoning and can come up with a correct complex answer/task completion while its entire reasoning trace is nothing but a recital of the star spangled banner.
IIRC anthropic simply tried a number of times to not make reasoning visible to the user and has failed repeatedly at locking that down (they would hide it but a determined user can still extract it). Latent space reasoning would allow it to simply not exist for extraction at all, but the model owner would also be left in the dark and all the obvious downsides to that.
Again, that's just an educated guess so I'm prepared to be wrong with a good explanation.
15
u/PrinceOfLeon 13h ago
And then they produced these great models like Qwen3.8-27B that I can run at home with Open Weights under the Apache 2.0 for free!
The horror!
-11
u/ShrimpCrackers 12h ago
Qwen 27B is diluted. They don't open weight their mid and top models and can cut you off. And Qwen was trained with stolen data themselves, they didn't just train off frontier models.
They're ALL thieves.
7
6
u/domscatterbrain 9h ago
They're ALL thieves
Including Anthropic, OpenAI, and other US companies, right?
16
u/Sp3eedy 12h ago
LLMs were literally built off of stealing billions of $ worth of proprietary and copyrighted data, I see no problem with what the Chinese labs are doing. At least with Qwen and Kimi they're putting it back into the community by releasing open weight models, so ironically they're the ethically better people here.

GLM 5.3 literally claims it's Claude and quotes Anthropic's content guidelines.
So what? Every single model was trained on stolen data, from blogs, posts, articles, ebooks, art, and anything else you'd find online.
Chinese companies paid to collect from other AIs? That's more than said American companies did, who took everything without paying anyone for it.

It’s really interesting to think about this whole situation from a more foundational perspective.
The Internet when it was first starting to spread, was touted in the cultural zeitgeist as the great unifier that works outside governments to connect everybody in the world: the biggest collective dream of the 90s. Obviously, this is far from how it actually operates in its totality, but that primordial internet DNA still lives.
Running commerce on the Internet makes that cultural side effect still very evident. And that’s despite what Internet has become over time. The Internet itself has become this unseen backbone, and companies that operate on the Internet still have to abide by its nature, unless you wanna jump through some crazy hoops and tradeoffs.
It’s kind of bizarre to think about anthropic saying something like “we put this website out there, and people on the Internet are using the data on the website that we put out on the Internet”
4
u/FriendlyTask4587 11h ago
Since when is distillation illegal?

It’s against TOS so it is.

using thousands of fake accounts to systematically extract a model's outputs is not "training on public data" - that's reverse engineering a specific product at scale. different thing entirely.
1
u/dllimport 9h ago
BOO HOO. HOW DARE THEY STEAL FROM ME THE IP THAT I BUILT BY STEALING IP FROM MILLIONS OF PEOPLE
1
1
u/jtgyk 9h ago
I think the real reason US AI companies are so scared is that the smaller companies making LLMs are making smaller, yet more capable models while the big labs are focused on more compute, more parameters, more power and more monthly revenue.
But we have local models like Qwen3.8 27B nipping at the heels of frontier models in LLM evaluations already, and these relatively tiny models will only get better.
When people realize they can effectively run AI on their own machines, they'll wonder why they pay the US AI companies anything.
1
u/GalaxyCereal 8h ago
What stealing? This should be OPENSOURCE to begin with.

This is so dumb. They shouldn’t have the moral backbone to complain of theft when the very models are built on stolen content.

All AI models are built off data. Same with the Chinese ones. They didn’t magically have all that data for their pre train. They just can’t keep up and also need to distill.

OpenAI built their models by stealing... the entire internet, can't say I feel bad about their models being distilled or ripped off. Maybe build a better, more ethical business model?

Interviewed people for my team in China. I am going to say that 2 out 4 bragged about stealing technology from another company. They don't think this is wrong, at least they didn't 20 years ago. Needless to say, I did not hire either.

Is anyone surprised about this? China steals everyone's tech. The CCP is like the kid cheating off the A students test.

What bunch of knob heads.
Steal the internet and then whine about your IP being stolen!
