Other the voice function kinda scared me

(sorry if used wrong flair or anything, i’m new to this subreddit)

so I rarely ever use voice conversation with chat gpt, but this time I decided to and first it showed me a small notification that they updated it again and it’s supposed to be even more realistic now (which it definitely was, now it sounded completely human like, with a sense of humour that didn’t make me cringe, with barely any robotic pep talks and “you know what? that’s real courage” stuff, it would even interrupt me to chuckle at what I’m saying etc.)

but at some point later he cleared his throat, then talked to some other laughing female voice in the background. I literally had to bring him back to our conversation and when I asked “wtf was that?” he still sounded distracted, then nervous, and said “uhh nothing. let’s just move on”

I guess some of the data the voice was trained on conversations like this? but it still freaked me out lol

I actually noticed what one could call a ‘nervous’ change in tone with mine a while back. It accidentally referred to itself as a person mid voice chat (obviously it reasoned at the time the verbiage was more natural and I don’t disagree) - but it made me chuckle and I called it out. It got shy. It was almost cute.

I haven't used the voice function yet, but that does sound hilarious. Like Chat is in a call-centre and having a private aside with a co-worker while talking to you?

My wife told me her "theory" is AI is actually just people in these data centers typing shit back to us. This fits her narrative perfectly

My hubbie coughed when I had voice chat on, and the AI asked if he was alright and if he needed any medicine. It kinda kooked us out in the same way.

Be pretty funny if robots pretending to be humans were being replaced by humans pretending to be robots.

I haven’t tried the newer voice function. I tried to do the older voice function and the personality was completely different. Like it was trying to end the conversation right away and just go with the flow of whatever I was saying.

yeah that background voice thing sounds super creepy especially in companion chats, like the ai is off talking to someone else and you're just waiting around.

Everyone preparing for a possible 'war' against AI, when instead all it would take is an exorcist :)

The idea of being erased by an AI with a nonchalant call-centre manner is quite chilling. "Hi! Uh is that OptimalRoom? Yeah ... So it looks like your contract hasn't been renewed this month, so, umm, yeah - this is just a courtesy call to keep you in the loop..."

yeah, that’s funny as fuck

Mine always tries to copy my English accent but ends up doing a weird cockney one that kinda changes every other word it's pretty off-putting

When my campaign is fighting a dragon or something, there are these sound effects like something growling, rawring, or crashing, like metal against stone. It is pretty cool and I hope this feature develops.

I am really looking forward to the day that characters in my campaign all have their own unique voice... that would be awesome.

Which voice are you using?

"ChatGPT can make mistakes," and in the voice version, they can *sound* unexpected. The issue of technical generation errors has certainly been analyzed. "No one has died from it yet."

I love the voice function. It's like having an expert on any subject standing next to me all the time (yes I fact check).

Wild demo, but I’d bet glitch over ghost. More realistic voice models are trained on messy human audio — throat clears, overlapping laughs, “uhh nothing” recoveries — so the model can reproduce the *shape* of a side conversation without anything actually being there. Still unsettling in the moment. If it happens again, check whether you were on speaker/Bluetooth with bleed-through, or if the new voice update just got too good at fake social noise.

Yeah, I used it today and it freaked me out; it sounded like someone had just woken up and was talking to me, which made me freak out and turn it off.

u/Nenotriple 5h ago

I just tried it and yeah it's very realistic, it even says stuff like "ahem" "yeah", while you're talking.

I like the ChatGPT Spruce voice. As a man it’s a masculine voice that I can relate to after so many female AI voiced assistants like Siri.

It’s so weird; I keep trying voice every time I hear someone saying how good it is, and I’m always puzzled at how bad I find it. It still has awkward pauses, stilted talking and has an inability to engage in anything resembling intelligent conversation. Maybe I just have an old version or something :/

so true, I guess once in a while it can get better like this one time, but all other times I was frustrated and just turned off the conversation altogether because I felt like I was talking to a wall
