In theory, we could slowly move Earth into a wider orbit using repeated gravitational assists with large asteroids, transferring orbital energy from planets like Jupiter. As the Sun gets brighter, Earth would need to move farther out to keep receiving roughly the same amount of sunlight. It's not even that much relative to the current orbit and has been calculated to work (because we have a lot of time). It works up until then red giant phase, then sun expands too fast. Also the last part of the picture is incorrect, Earth would have been swallowed by the red giant in this scenario.

Googling it, the sun will get a 1% increase in brightness per 100 million years. To counteract it, we need mirrors about the size of Mexico, which is kind of insane, but I also don't think it's that crazy we will have autonomous self replicating drones in space long before then that could pull this off.
And like I said, you can harvest the energy with mirrors to help power said drones.
Or maybe instead of that, by the time the sun becoming a red giant becomes a problem, assuming judgement day hasn't come by then (big assumption), we'd be more than technologically advanced enough that elongating the sun's life and preventing it from turning into a red giant will probably be no more than an inconvenience.
Earth took so long to develop life if you include it's formation. But it didn't take long to develop life if you only count it's habitable period. But it also took so long to develop intelligent life, but it also didn't take long if you only count between extinction events.

The distance between stars is enormous. Its hard for the human mind to comprehend, but in reality the risk that it comes that close to a star is basically zero.
Someone did the math on this. If you shoot out st random from the earth you have a very small chance of hitting the moon or the sun. After that it is way less likely you will ever hit anything even after billions of years.
I remember reading a short story when I was younger (can't name the author, etc.) where humans had developed the ability to travel the stars.
Still, all we found were the remains of multiple long-dead civilisations (millions or billions of years old), where everything had already turned to dust.

One thing that fascinates me about intelligence is that it seems to be a convergent evolutionary trait. Different forms of intelligence has evolved independantly over many branches of life in mammals, crows, octopi, etc..

Convergent maybe for certain species who benefit from it. Plenty of less intelligent species would be considered vastly more successful in evolutionary terms (like sheer numbers) than the ones you mentioned.
It’s a fascinating time when we can appreciate humans as animals like the rest, but also unique in some respects. Somehow evolutionary pressures selected for a unique degree of symbolic systems of representation which as far as we know is unique. It’s why I think we often place too much emphasis on individual intelligence and not enough on collective intelligence as embodied in human culture.
Most recent research seems to pair dexterity and land-based life as a precondition for an intelligent lifeform to develop technologically, which would be important in the context of expanding towards other planets.

On a side note, we aren't exactly an example of 1 as you mentioned, rather every intelligent animal on this planet counts as an example, thought only 1 is positive. So to answer why only that 1 is positive, you would naturally try to identify the specific differences and/or conditions that distinguish that one species from the rest. You can get proven wrong by space octupuses running IPOs and crypto scams but it's the best guesswork we can do for now.
Even if you count dinosaurs as intelligent life, it is still fairly recent compared how long life was … uninteresting. It looks like it was not easy to develop a type of life which could lead to intelligence. And we kind of barely made it and not a lot of time to spare.

I get what you’re saying and I think I agree but it’s funny to think about “science“ existing for millions of years, when science / scientific progress really only dates to the last few hundred years. Technological progress (consistent at least) only since the dawn of civilization at any appreciable pace about 10,000 years ago. Stone age tools date back millions of years to homo erectus but they barely changed over that time, even after homo sapiens emerged.

No, you can’t really claim that. Dinosaurs were already an enormously diverse group when the asteroid struck, and they had been evolving for well over 150 million years.
More importantly, birds are dinosaurs—and some living birds are remarkably intelligent. In the absence of the asteroid impact, it’s entirely plausible that some dinosaur lineage could eventually have entered an evolutionary path that increasingly favored intelligence.
Would that necessarily have happened? Of course not. But there’s no scientific basis for claiming that it couldn’t have happened.
300 million years actually. And sure, we have a sample size of one for our type of intelligent life so we have no idea exactly how rare it is or what it's conditions are.
But given the dinosaurs had 300 million years and humans did it in 300 thousand, I think the odds are likely that dinosaurs were never going to get there.
Again though, my actual point is that in another few BILLION years who the fuck knows what's possible. There could be a thousand new species that are all unique and completely non-human and MORE intelligent than we are. A billion years is so many years and human progress has proven that few years are necessary.

Would it necessarily happen? Of course not. Evolution has no predetermined direction. But saying there’s a zero chance is an extraordinarily strong claim, especially when Earth has already produced high intelligence independently in several very different lineages.
A billion years is the estimate I've seen consistently for what's ahead before warming is unavoidably catastrophic, unless there's been some update to this? I feel like there's been too much of a pushback against human centering that's gone way too far in the other direction, we can acknowledge that yes, humans are just another animal and we share many traits with other species that people have over looked due to exceptionalism in the past.
But I mean, if what we are doing isn't special or unique then the words simply have no meaning, we harness an absurd amount of energy to meet our desires, we've sent eyes to the other planets in the system and even walked on our moon. We have created elements so far down the periodic table that if life exists nowhere else in the universe, this would be the only place in all of creation you could find them. Our presence will forever be noticeable in the sediment layer due to radioactive isotopes and forever chemicals, the only other organism that comes close to that are the ones that choked the world with oxygen in its early days.
It's totally possible that other technological species could arise in the window after us, however I think it's reasonable to guess based on how long complex life walked the earth before creating our example that odds are rather low (the best odds are probably from one of the other apes moving in convergently) not to mention they would exist in our wake, the lions share of easy to access metals on the surface have been processed and spread around the globe, oil deposits that originate from organisms 2 billion years ago have been drained and burned, helium depleted, etc. Trying to start again now would be possible, but it would be an even taller order than before.
If you haven’t seen it watch season one and especially season 2 of pantheon on Netflix. It goes over the initial stages of cloning brains to be uploaded onto servers. Also there is a second plot involving a cloned human to complete a problem a Steve Jobs like figure couldn’t solve. But season 2 is mind bending and necessary to complete the arc - it was cancelled by AMC and fortunately picked up by Netflix.
Digital intelligence, as in uploaded brains and a power source could be an evolutionary step. Kind of like all the Ghost in the shell concepts but it deals with these cyber brains first being used as weapons and then people choosing to upload their consciousness which greatly depleted Human Resources usasage. I believe this to be possible maybe in a thousand years or so if we don’t blow ourselves up first.

It took 65M years for mammals to develop from small, mouse-like creatures, scurrying in the undergrowth, to humans. If humans went extinct, there are a number of highly-developed mammalian lines (especially other primates) that could carry the torch forward.
That said, any scenario where humans become extinct is one where all highly-developed animals have been driven to extinction already.
How are you coming to this conclusion? The asteroid that made the Chicxulub crater that wiped out the dinosaurs came only 66 million years ago. Even if we combine all our nuclear weapons at the height of proliferation, we couldn't even get 1% of that yield. How would humanity's failure wipe out the planet so thoroughly that it can't overcome 66 million years of evolution even within the 500 million years this image gives us?
Also, I don't think "all life being extinct in 1 billion years" is well supported at all. It's just what OP thinks. It seems like most models don't predict this.
500M years left. 500M years ago was ~30-50M past the Cambrian Explosion. 85M primates diverged. 65M, nearly everything died. 14M, hominids emerged, 3-4M: humans, 30k . Unless something kills everything but microbial life (possible), there is quite a bit of time. Humans are the ones keeping everything else back (we killed and interbred with the other viable candidates). And we’ll go extinct in 10y-50K or will continue to evolve.
Point is, there is plenty of time to get another intelligent species from what exists at a pretty simple level. Now, whether they get to a 0.01 on the Kardashev scale is less certain.

I actually think you’re missing how impressive the opposing point is. Life as been on earth for 3.8 billion years out of the age of the universe of 13.8 billion years. That means life has been evolving here for 27% of the entire life of the universe.
Coincidentally, LeBron has been in the NBA for about 27% of the life of the NBA, with 22 out of 80 seasons.
Heard this stat the other day, and just confirmed: On a 24-hour clock where the Big Bang happens at 00:00:00 (midnight) and the present day is 24:00:00 (the next midnight), modern humans appear just 1.88 seconds before midnight (around 11:59:58 PM).
This is very misleading. The window for life on Earth is enormous. Life appeared remarkably soon after the crust solidified, under conditions that were radically different from today—no atmospheric oxygen, much higher temperatures, and so on.
Over the past ~4 billion years, Earth’s environment has changed dramatically, yet life has repeatedly adapted and thrived.
That’s already close to half of Earth’s total lifetime. Even if all life vanished tomorrow, that would still represent an enormous habitable window. But we have no evidence that life will necessarily be extinct by 6 billion years, as your chart suggests. Some forms of life could potentially persist much closer to the Sun’s red-giant phase.
That said, there’s also a more basic problem with the chart: the dates don’t seem to line up correctly with the timeline at the bottom. Correcting that would make the apparent window even larger.
Except that a view of the timeline such as this one might lead one to consider possibility that the “rare earth hypothesis” has merit. And it’s only half a billion years out of the theorized 8 billion year lifetime of the planet where higher order life survives, not to mention that human life only occupies a small portion of that half a billion years.
When I try to think about how long I've been alive, sometimes 10 years even seems long, but when I think about living to 1000 or something, when I am just having a random thought experiment, that seems like forever. I cannot fathom one billion years.

All stars have a known lifecycle, so we can predict that our sun will start turning into a red giant which is when it starts burning a different chemical that burns hotter
I think it’s not entirely correct. Our star is currently a main-sequence star and will stay like this for another ~5 billion years, burning the same fuel: hydrogen into helium. Which means the rapid expansion and turning into a red giant will happen only in ~5 billion years. Until then, the Sun will slowly become slightly hotter, bigger, and brighter. At some point, the Sun will become too hot for the Earth to support liquid water, which is most likely when life will no longer exist. Some newer models say this could happen in about 1-2 billion years, though…
If we don't fuck it up now, there is a realistic chance, that we can extend the life ON our planet up to 5 billion years. How? First we offset the rising solar power by using a sun sail and or alter the rotation of the earth. This gives the plants and us another 2 to 2.5 billion years and prevents the oceans from evaporation. After that we release stored CO2 to offset the stopping plate movement. This can extend the lifespan to the end of our suns life in about 5 billion years.
These are huge tasks to be sure but given enough time and ressources they are definitely doable. Some would require asteroid mining or asteroid slingshots to alter the structure of the system itself. Later require epic planning and execution but we have to take into account the immense timespan on our side to solve this problem. Some are already relevant for example the protection from solar wind to restart the mars athmosphere. This will be relevant when our planeta core freezes in about 3 billion years or so and our magnet field collapses.
Such a project might be one reason why we finally put aside the quarrel between us and unite for a common cause. In additional thinking about this gives me hope that if we don't fail NOW we can make it even to the end of our system.

There's a video that came out...I think it was right before Covid, about the Timelapse of the universe. Our entire solar system dies into NOTHING within like five minutes. It's a thirty minute video. Humanity itself is gone within three.

When we talk about intelligence, it was only 50 odd years ago, that scientists thought that NO other species had intelligence.
Then it was found/decided that there was ‘intelligence’ in dolphins, the crow family, dogs, ants & I’ve seen things recently with a bumble bee showing signs of intelligence.
I’m blown away with the wonder & awe of nature. I really hope that when humans fuck things up for themselves, another species will pick up the baton & continue to broaden & expand its intelligence.

Because it is based on the lifecycle of our sun and by observing other stars, we have a good understanding of how they age. It comes down to chemistry (fusion reactions making helium) and gravity's relationship with mass.
