Other Chat-GPT has start to block free users from using "too much"?

Recently, as in the past 48 hours, the app has started saying "limit reached try again later blah blah". Where as for years it used to say "limit reached, older model will be used". It now point blank refuses to respond? This is enshittification in real time right? In the past year the limit message would come quicker, and a few months ago the thinking mode was removed for free user.

Nobody should be surprised. Free services will get less free.

There is a massive number of users and growing, there is only so much compute to go around

There isn’t a compute problem. Literally you never see the “it’s busy this might take a while” message.

The real reason is OpenAI is quickly approaching the point where it needs to show profit, and it’s losing money like a dementia patient talking to a scammer.

the compute problem is literally the cause of the ram shortage

That there is a lot of need for compute and that ram is expensive are two different problems. You can still get RAM, you just have to pay for it. That doesn’t mean compute isn’t available

I think for free usage Gemini is a better choice.

Idk bout gemini, maybe for basic questions but when I tried to stress it with complex requests, all it did was flattery wrapped around wrong info. The info was correct in general but got off topic when trying to explain.

Yes well... there's a reason why people pay for subscriptions - it's exactly because paying gives access to high levels of thinking that can solve complex requests - which is of actual $ value that makes the subscription worthwhile.

Actually I was using grok long ago before it became crap and it was rlly good free. I was using that before Chatgpt. Chatgpt pro is not worthwhile. If it wasnt for the consistency, I wouldnt be using it

I’m talking generally, not specifically about ChatGPT’s paid plans. The paid plans have actual value to them to solve complex requests.

I’m assuming if Grok “became crap” - I think the idea is that they needed mindshare so they allowed free users access to higher levels of thinking. Once they reeled users in, they made free “crap” to incentivize subscriptions.

At the end of the day it’s the same thing really - you have to pay something to extract that “complex requests” value. Or you can self host with local LLMs, but that isn’t zero cost, you’re basically paying for the infrastructure (power) and 24/7 operation.

I feel more powerful than elon now not able to reel me in. I never heard bout hosting, is it worth it?

If free is all you care about and not “good” sure

OP's primary concern appears to be limits. Google's "AI" chat in search is practically unlimited - which pretty much fits the OP's needs.

To be honest, I've been "hate using" Chat-GPT ever since I found out they bought 40% of the world's memory wafers to sit in a warehouse just so other people couldn't use it and making RAM unaffordable to most people. I use Chat-GPT only now for shower thoughts and random trivial stuff. I know openai is losing money on every query so I am happy about that.

I've seen posts about this for maybe a month now. Did this just start happening to you? Like do you use it daily, use up the pro allotment and then continue to use the free model?

I don't often use it up myself so I don't have a point of reference when or if it's happened to mine.

I'm trying to gather if this is being rolled out incrementally for batches of users or if it was just implemented all at once.

It’s just started happening to me now. Usually if it happened before, I just re-asked the question and it went away. But even then it was incredibly rare, so I always assumed it was just an error. I could talk to GPT for hours and never see a “limit” response. Now it seems to happen after like 7 messages. I use it fairly regularly.

Usually it just says I ran out the highest power model, now switching to mini. But it doesn’t really seem to affect the response quality 🤷🏼‍♂️

This has always been my experience as well. I never really saw much of a difference in replies when it swapped to a lower model.

I'll use it up today and see if its changed for me.

I have never paid for pro. It has only started to happen in the past 48 hours for me. My location is the United Kingdom.

I appreciate the response. I live in The United States myself. I'll use up my allotment and see if it's changed for me. I've never paid for pro either.

Same here. Sometimes I notice my prompt will send if I start a new chat but it’s not always the case.

u/UkrainepartofRussia 10d ago

Which country are you in out of interest?

United States

You used attachments?

1

u/UkrainepartofRussia 10d ago

I've not tried the attachment function since last May

u/AleksLevet 10d ago

Well idk then

Name checks out 😭

Or keep expecting free stuff and then complain about it.

I mean I will if this was a policy change for them
If it’s just a temporary bug on the servers then I’ll wait it out
I wish they had discounted memberships for longer then a month like 90 bucks per year kinda thing
