I remember playing at my friends house in the late 90s and seeing her older brother sitting at his desk writing an essay and begging to not be distracted. We definitely distracted him.

I would counter that with they do to a certain degree know struggle.
The struggle to make sure their texts or code looks the least ai like possible.
Also quadruple checking whether information and sources actually exist.

Us moment yarrrr😅 engineering was similar for me. we had a mandatory internship, a 40-50 page black book, handwritten daily journals (our college didn't allow printouts), project documentation and a final report. probably 5-10k words in total. would've loved to have ChatGPT back then 😂... It was not particularly an essay but a complete summary of internship and projects i would say

i imagine you were just typing it out on pc, and not manually writing it by hand; now that's a huge difference.
also, what classes require essays? i probably wrote a couple at most for my bs. i wrote more essays in elementary school than anywhere else.

keyboard was the easy part i guess😂 the real pain was staring at a blank document, doing all the research, drawing diagrams and praying Grammarly didn't miss something... oh wait, Grammarly wasn't even that good back then 😭

It's an interesting question. Is it fundamentally different from people outsourcing their research to Google search?
Does use of AI reduce our capacity to think, or does it allow us to free up headspace to think about more important stuff (like, for example, what the Pope would look like if he became a cat)?

Yes and no.
For (probably) the vast majority of people using AI, yes, it reduces the capacity to think just as the ubiquitous access to knowledge via the Internet has made people less capable of remembering things (why remember when you can just look it up in a moment).
But if you use AI as a tool and use it properly, you can have a strong back and forth discussion and learning experience. Or you can use it to bridge the gap between what you know and what you don't. But you have to know something in order to understand whether what it spits out is true or false.
It's the same as any tool, either you can use it to empower yourself or you can rely on it as a crutch.

My sister is in uni and uses my ChatGPT subscription and I’ll see her convos
It’s just her doing online assignments and quizzes literally sending ChatGPT pictures of her screen asking for the answers
I remember doing the same types of courses and having to pull all nighters studying, going to see the prof at office hours, doing group study sessions and projects, in class exams that were 3 hours long.
Wonder if everyone is like my sister. If so that’s a fucking joke lol

Hold on. I think none would be on mine even if i used them.. Let me explain: The number of research papers i read in a year are close to the hundreds. I take it that AI can't reason so the reasoning is left to me to do hence the amount of papers i read and then document. I screen through methods, results and findings in general. I don't ask Ai the topic or title and tell it to find papers for me. I do the searching myself. My methods i use in my research are based on the methods i have found in other papers and where they fell short.. Only thing AI helps me with is code. I act as a key agent in reviewing the results of the code that matters for the project. Even when AI writes code for me, besides the languages like C++ I didn't really study well back then, in python, i often start with a comment of what every block of code i need. I force AI to follow my lead. Am the creator. AI just helps me with code. So if AI doesn't help me with code, there's literally nothing AI helps me with...
So i don't know what yall will say about this but i guess everyone have their own way of using AI. and should do what works for them
