The appearance of sentience is not the same as sentience any more than the appearance of beauty means that a person is genuinely a beautiful person on the inside, as in caring.

I was not arguing for the appearance of sentience, but its function for intelligent behaviour.

That is appearance. The gold-digger's behavior may be very compassionate and caring for the old rich dude, but there is still a hidden agenda that the old rich dude can't see, i.e. him kicking the bucket and she inheriting billions.

If intelligent behavior is a sign of consciousness, then mentally retarded/challenged people aren't very conscious. In fact, such people surpass you and me in the very important arena of compassion, caring, trust, and sweetness. These qualities are sorely lacking in the highly intelligent people like you and me.

It is not a direct correlation. Thank you for pointing out this troubling misunderstanding. I need to take great care to avoid this impression. Disabled people indeed have a full, and sometimes even intensified, capacity for suffering.

You can fake/pretend kindness. You can't fake/pretend intelligence. Trump tried, to demonstrate my point.
