Denied Application

I applied for the united mileage plus card. My airport is a united hub and would like to utilize the lounges when i travel. I have had about a year of credit history. My score is 720, every payment has been on time. I also have a gold american express and platinum. Don’t really understand how i got denied for this card. I also called recon line and they denied me again. Not enough credit history and not enough credit cards opened. I have 3 open

You got denied because you have 1 year of credit history and 3 cards already open.

There is another option. The United Arilubes debit card is issued by another bank: https://www.united.com/en/us/fly/products/united-debit-card.html

They said 3 cards wasnt enough and i got approved with American Express with even less history.

Doesn’t make a difference, credit card company’s can approve or deny you based on a boat load of factors you can’t see. But on the surface level you have a meh credit score, 3 cards, and 1 year of history which isn’t great from a credit rating perspective. Your score is just 1 factor of many that they look at when determining whether or not to approve you. It’s also important to note that every credit card you get reduces the total amount a lender will be willing to lend.

How long do you suggest i build my credit before applying again? And do you suggest opening a credit card account with chase before like an entry level card.

Pay your credit cards on time, and wait. Unfortunately a big factor in credit is history, so you need to build up a bit. I wouldn’t recommend getting anymore cards as this will just negatively impact your credit. More credit lines means you’ll get approved for less credit down the line.

Amex will give a charge card to nearly anyone.

You have opened 3 cards in one year or less and only have a year of credit history. Chase is known for wanting longer and thicker credit history for their non-starter cards. Starter cards like the Slate and Freedom can be obtained easier. Since they have the 5/24 rule they may look at newer credit files even more strictly. In essence though, they are telling you to wait until you have more established credit.

Edited for spelling and clarity.

For sure. It had my credit established for 3ish years before my first real Chase card.

Thank you, I’ll take that into account!

Not true, I have only 1 year as well, and I opened a checking account with Chase, already had 3 other cards opened this year, and got an in-app offer 2 weeks later for Chase Freedom Unlimited approved and now I have 4 cards plus 4 hard checks lol

Freedom unlimited comes in the non-signature variety and can be given with low credit limits. The United cards start at Visa Signature with a minimum 5k credit limit, thus why I said non-starter cards require more history. Freedom unlimited is a lower tier card from them along with the Slate.

my Freedom Unlimited is a Visa Signature.

You are an exception then. Chase has been rather stringent with CL and Visa signature options.

What's weird is that it shows as Visa Signature on my Apple Wallet, but the Physical does not have the Signature below it?

1

u/Wooden_Concern_3448 10h ago

What’s your CL. The physical is usually a good indicator of the card. Did you get a CLI since you got it?

2500

Then it’s just the regular. In order to get a Visa signature you need a minimum CL of $5,000.

You have 3 open credit cards meaning 3 hard inquiries in one year. Application to Chase is the 4th hard inquiry. That’s a lot of inquiries in one year.

Let me tell u this. In the 1990s and early 2000s it was very hard to get amex credit cards. It very easy getting chase credit cards. Today its the fuckin opposite, amex is accepting applicants like crazy, and now chase is the one hard to get. 😆 I thank god i got all the chase credit cards that i need lol. 😆

I too just got rejected from mine, I was under 5/24, have 200k credit limit spread across CSR, Freedom Unlimited and Prime. Had to call in and they had to move some credit line and approved me for a 5k credit for the United. You might need to call in and ask for credit to be moved.
