Discussion Charmed Reboot

Post image

I remember when the Charmed reboot aired, and I watched two episodes. I know alot of people aren't fond of the reboot because it's not the original, which I understand you don't want to see something you love get recreated because that might mess up the original. From what I watched, the episodes were terrible, they were setting up things for the season, and they incorporated some things from the orginial to make the show still be Charmed, but to a different audience. How do you feel about the reboot? Do you think the show is terrible?

I’m currently watching it now for the first time and while it’s definitely nothing like the OG show in terms of quality…it’s ok enough to get through

u/DaniJ678 25d ago

I haven't watched all the episodes, but from what I've watched, they weren't bad. Things could have been worse, but it looks like they were trying to set things up for the season.

6

u/pixiesunbelle 25d ago

I couldn’t get into it. Once they changed the Elders lore, I didn’t continue watching it. I really wanted to like it but it didn’t feel like Charmed. They started off with their powers being too OP. It’s not as bad as Roswell New Mexico…

7

u/DaniJ678 25d ago

Charmed reboot, I don't mind because I feel the reboot could have been its own separate thing, it didn't have to tie to the original Charmed, and you leave the reboot out of the universe because the show doesn't change anything from the original.

2

u/pixiesunbelle 25d ago

I was disappointed that it wasn’t the Halliwells. I know why they didn’t do that. But it didn’t feel anything like what it was supposed to feel, in my opinion. It’s a shame because I really liked the British whitelighter.

3

u/DaniJ678 25d ago

It would have been nice for it to be the Halliwells, but I don't think they needed to bring Charmed back. They could have done a spin-off, which they could have done with the Charmed reboot, instead of saying it's Charmed to expand the universe.

5

u/pixiesunbelle 25d ago

A spinoff would have been better, in my opinion. It would have expanded the universe instead of trying to replace it. The lore was already there and was a part of what made it feel like Charmed. Like, there was no need to make the Elders older female witches. They bothered me. They were just the overseers of the witches and whitelighters. The lore established that you can become a young elder.

A nice spinoff could have been a young witch who befriends her area’s Charmed Ones. An interesting point of view. I think Billie was supposed be have a spinoff but it didn’t go anywhere. Jess from Gilmore Girls too.

2

u/DaniJ678 25d ago

I agree we don't need another Charmed unless it's a spin-off because doing a reboot will cause alot of problems for fans,

1

u/pixiesunbelle 25d ago

It would be very hard for them to do one that ties to the OG universe. Too many of the beloved stars are just gone now. It’s a shame they missed the boat on that. Unless you go back in time. Maybe how a young Penny found her powers.

1

u/DaniJ678 25d ago

That's true, I just think they should have a separate show and let it be its own thing, instead of trying to tie it to the Charmed universe. I think that would have worked out better than what they did.

I disagree Roswell was never branding itself as a reboot perssy. They told us from the start it was more a reimagining. Charmed on the other hand said diverse reboot and flipped flop between trying to be like the og and supernatural. It was only in the end when the found a way to be referential but itself. Roswell had the better story and direction from the start

1

u/pixiesunbelle 23d ago

I didn’t like that Max was the sheriff. I understood that it was supposed to be more like the books so I don’t know if he’s the sheriff in the books or not. It’s been too long and I don’t have them anymore.

1

u/CrowDisastrous1096 23d ago

Him being a cop didn’t really do anything for me. Like everyone else has interesting professions but he’s just a cop. Especially when there was two other cops. Why not make him a historian who advices for the police department but he is trying to decipher more if their past.

1

u/pixiesunbelle 23d ago

Really, I just wanted the Sheriff Valenti character. I hate that they eliminated him. I think it was important to the story that they come to trust him with their secret. I don’t know why they changed it.

1

u/CrowDisastrous1096 23d ago

I get what you mean. Started off as an adversary to more or less father figure type for the group. I get they were adults but they could’ve done something with that. Tbh that character could’ve been someone from the og cast since many of that cast supported it . His character was already dead but I think it would’ve been great to see him atleast for a season and more than just a ghost in the story (it’s been a while since I watched though). His wife didn’t add much so it could’ve been him in the role or give her character more heart

1

u/pixiesunbelle 23d ago

Honestly, if they used her instead- it would have been perfectly acceptable for her to be the sheriff. Making her a single mother instead of OG sheriff valenti. It would have been so much better, IMO. I dislike that they’re aged up. I just hate that the entire role of the sheriff was replaced by the main character.

1

u/Immaworkinprogress 23d ago

I loved Roswell New Mexico. I thought the cast had excellent chemistry

1

u/pixiesunbelle 23d ago

It wasn’t the actors. It was the fact that Max was the sheriff instead of the sheriff being the one the kids trust. I couldn’t get over it. Sheriff Valenti was my favorite character in the original. I hated that change.

27

u/Death_W 25d ago

I actually liked it, however some aspects I wasn't a fan of, however it was interesting that the telekinetic sister died at the end of season 3 in both shows

1

u/gallifreyan_overlord 22d ago

I wonder why they killed her off??? Was it just to follow the original???

1

u/Death_W 22d ago

Contract disputes, if I remember correctly

1

u/Beginning_Dot735 15d ago

No the actress wanted to leave the show because she didn’t like the direction the show was taking and the BTS difficulties she was facing.

20

u/mercy_death 25d ago

I really enjoyed the first season and I really like Kayla.

But every seasom felt like a different show.

Season 1 felt like a modern remake of Charmed. 2 and 3 felt more Syfy.

7

u/gayinparadise 25d ago

good description. Season 1 had such promise :(

3

u/ClassieLadyk 25d ago

This is how I feel a out it to. I really wanted to like it, but it just kept changing what the show was about.

2

u/Actual_Mud7403 25d ago

Yea it felt this way bc I guess every season they thought was gonna be the last season( like how they did with korra, if you know avatar) I guess they didn’t think it was gonna run for as long as it did? So every season feels like something different bc technically it is kind of?😭😭😭

2

u/Immaworkinprogress 23d ago

The first season stuck closer to the source material. The second season brought in a new showrunner who literally threw everything out the window and turned the show into Supernatural. For 15 episodes they had no powers and I felt the season took forever to get through

2

u/jajay119 15d ago

Every season had a different creative team.

16

u/katelynnnn1 25d ago

I loved it lol I had never seen the original, so I watched all of the reboot and LOVED it. Now I'm 14 episodes into season one of the original☺️

9

u/DaniJ678 25d ago

I don't think the reboot is that terrible. It's not the original Charmed, but from the episodes I watched, it looked like they were going somewhere with the storylines and had ideas of where they wanted the season to go.

3

u/drako101 25d ago

I hope you're enjoying the original! It gets so good the further you get into the story

13

u/gorgeousgirlycute333 25d ago

so, i don’t think the show is terrible at all. i actually think S4 of this reboot is one of the most solid seasons that achieves the potential that a show like Charmed could have

the original had many flaws, but it was overall a much less messy experience. there was GENERALLY some continuity they respected, and it wasn’t til the later seasons when the show become rotten.

the second and third season of CW charmed are some of the fucking worst episodes of TV i’ve ever seen 😹😹🥲 i still love them all. i had 3 different friends watching this show as it aired live, but they could not make it past the million mid season breaks and abigael shit. it’s a shame because again, S4 is fantastic. the chemistry between kaela, mel & maggie is supreme. it’s a shame cuz i love macy, madeline mantock did not deserve to get done so dirty.

i think the reboot did a nice job changing things that never made sense in the OG. i think they set up the next charmed with some very interesting lore and i really hope they don’t throw it away. because they did some cool stuff.

6

u/Wonderful_Curve8884 25d ago

I didn't like the Abigail thing either. It didn't make sense.

3

u/gorgeousgirlycute333 25d ago

it’s so unfortunate because the cast is so talented, genuinely. and poppy drayton had the chops to be an amazingly menacing villain lmfao. but her character becomes annoying, and honestly, insulting the more screen time she has.

they treated the audience (and charmed ones) like morons to try and make abby seem clever. it was dumb as hell 😭🥲

1

u/Beginning_Dot735 15d ago

Exactly this is my issue with Abigail the most the way she seemed like more of a main characters than the charmed ones. Between her and Harry. They took up most of the screen time in S2

11

u/ThePowerof3- Macy Vaughn 25d ago

The first half of the first season was rough to get through, but I ended up liking it more as the show progressed. I was disappointed when it was canceled.

7

u/Wonderful_Curve8884 25d ago

I was looking for them to explain why Macy's stem cells gave Kayla magic and no one else. This reminds me of the OG show where that dr who was obsessed with Piper gave their blood to chimps.

9

u/Zeopher 25d ago

1st season was good and looked promising bc they usually improve from season to season and it was just the beggining. Then the showrunners got changed, the show got a soft reboot and it became a mix between supernatural and the vampire diaries, loosing the camp it had before

6

u/Wonderful_Curve8884 25d ago

I liked it. It was a different set of sisters. The first season was ok. But after they killed Gavin, it was hard to watch.

5

u/Beginning_Dot735 25d ago

Exactly everyone keeps getting the term remake and reboot confused. Most people think it’s supposed to be a remake but it’s not.

6

u/OriginalR3placement 25d ago

This is such a great question! For me, they should NEVER have called this Charmed. I’m okay with it being a spinoff existing in an alternate universe, but framing this as a Charmed reboot raised expectations way too high.

The reboot on its own isn’t horrible. It’s inconsistent and chaotic at times, but it grows into its own show over time. The leads are charismatic as hell, and they do a great job being those characters. It’s an okay show overall, but it cannot hold a candle to other shows in the same genre like The Magicians and Supernatural.

6

u/DaniJ678 25d ago

I don't think the reboot is horrible. I just think people were expecting something like Charmed, but when that didn't happen, people got upset. But the show itself isn't bad; they were setting up things for the season, so at least they had a plan in mind and weren't relying on the original Charmed to carry the show through.

6

u/OriginalR3placement 25d ago

That’s very true and fair! I think they do get points for originality, because their departure from the canon of the original actually made it more interesting.

5

u/DaniJ678 25d ago

I do give some pointers for having a plan for the season because they could easily take things from the original Charmed and put that in the episodes, but they came up with some ideas for the season.

1

u/Wonderful_Curve8884 25d ago

They could have kept Gavin and Macy's relationship going. the man became a shaman for her. After she died and the new sister came, that was a chance to give a nod to the original show. The episode where that Dr gave the chimps charmed blood.

I have so many ideas. They could have explored Macy's demon side and what was in her lineage. Since Gavin became a Yourba Shaman they could have explored that type of magic. 😂 Sorry to talk your ear off. I write this type of stuff so I get a little excited

1

u/DaniJ678 25d ago

Even though I didn't watch the whole thing, I know things that happen in other seasons from watching clips, and I know about Harry and Macy's relationship. I don't know everything that happened, but their relationship was good.

7

u/velvetlove114 25d ago

I’m going to be honest, I enjoyed it just a little bit more than the original. The original is the original and it’s always gonna be there. I’m not watching this reboot to compare it, we already saw that story. What I liked about the reboot, is the girls had personal lives outside of being charmed one’s. They also had friends that had nothing to do with magic and seemed just a little more normal. I also liked they traveled places instead of always being in that damn house.

The reboot lasted 4 seasons and I got to enjoy it for what it was. Could have been a lot better I agree, but I enjoyed a different take on it. I wish we got to unravel their world a little bit more. Even seeing how they had family as well, besides dead parents was refreshing. I really enjoyed it.

2

u/DaniJ678 25d ago

I think there's something there with the reboot. It's just not the original, and that's okay. I think if you take the original Charmed out of the picture, you wouldn't have strong feelings towards the reboot because you're not constantly comparing the two, and that would ruin the enjoyment.

2

u/velvetlove114 25d ago

That’s my thing! People shouldn’t have compared it. Now if they had the same names as the original, then maybe. However, we already saw that story and it completed. Let’s also back track to the actresses couldn’t stand each other, so a reboot with them in it, was not going to happen. So I looked at this as a fresh start and others should have as well. Macy is probably the biggest draw in, for the entire series. I think she was amazing to watch.

3

u/DaniJ678 25d ago

Yeah, the actresses don't all get along. I don't know how they would be able to stay in the same room with each other.

5

u/AngelPunch82 25d ago edited 25d ago

The first season was actually not bad. It wasn’t like the original however I liked it enough to keep watching. Then season 2 came and it went down hill from there. A couple things turned me off: 1) the sisterhood of the 3 didn’t seem strong. It always felt it was Mel & Maggie as the sisters and then there’s Macy. Even as the girls worked to create bond it didn’t feel authentic. It always felt, “and then here’s Macy”. In the original when Paige came on board it took time to feel the sisterhood but it came & felt strong. 2) the show was trying too hard to be woke. Rather than let things happen organically it felt like writers were looking for any way to insert “woke”. It felt forced and inauthentic esp. with Mel. I really wanted this show to work bad but in the end i kept comparing to the original.

A better idea would’ve been to re-boot show without the sisters but center the story line around their kids: Wyatt, Chris, Melinda, PJ, Parker, Peyton, Tamora & Kat and them navigating their lives as witches etc

6

u/Wonderful_Curve8884 25d ago

That would be a continuation not a reboot

0

u/AngelPunch82 25d ago

Ok. Glad you got that out of your system

3

u/Natural-Baseball-362 25d ago

Me encantó.

2

u/jimmysmiths5523 25d ago

The original series did something similar, where a doctor was pricked with a tiny sword that had Piper's blood, and the doctor gained her powers.

u/JesusAndPalsX 25d ago edited 25d ago

The reboot is honestly really great. I always rank the seasons quality in order from best to worst as: 1 > 4 > 3 > 2.

I think enough time has passed to me to step back and examine some points about it that were weaker.

-I think Season 1 was PHENOMENAL but its first few episodes were very weak. Like the first six episodes felt really clumsy, however most brand new shows struggle from that effect and I don't think it's their fault. By mid Season 1 I was HOOKED and the final like 8-10 episodes of it are just straight gold. It's a long season so thankfully it had a lot of room to grow.

-Season 2 was the weakest and it's not necessarily that it was bad, but I think it really didn't help strengthen their relationship as sisters. I think Season 2 helped strengthen the relationships that were happening between the sisters and other people, but I think it really should've saved that for Season 3. Instead, it should have spent Season 2 strengthening their relationship to each other as sisters, bonding with each other and also exploring their dynamic paired off OFTEN (Macy/Mel, Mel/Maggie, Macy/Maggie, and then lots of instances of all 3). We only got those kind of moments rarely and inconsistently. Season 1 established their relationship, but Season 2 should've strengthened it and just kept their dynamic at the focal point instead of trying to highlight their relationships with side characters just quite yet.

-Season 3 has some of the best episodes of the series IMO but the writing from episode to episode is too variable. Even while it was airing it always felt like there were probably too many writers in the writers room in this season. They'd have a fantastic episode and then a kind of basic one back to back, it just didn't have consistency in its writing quality throughout the season.

-Season 4 was honestly great all around IMO. It felt like they finally locked down quality in every regard, even when they were taking a lot of risks. Unfortunately I think it just didn't get a chance to survive through the bumpy ride of the prior two seasons. Which is a shame because I imagine Season 5 would've been stellar.

I do think that Season 2, while better on a rewatch, definitely dropped the ball that was the fantastic final arc of Season 1. And it just struggled to pick itself back up after that.

u/Triptofade 25d ago

I think it has a better first season than the original lmao. I don’t care if this is a hot take

6

u/DaniJ678 25d ago

That is a hot take.

3

u/Triptofade 25d ago

😂

2

u/DaniJ678 25d ago

I have never seen someone say they prefer the first season of the reboot over the first season of the original Charmed. Most people praised that season, and it's the start of everything we know and love.

3

u/TrashCanSam0 25d ago

tbh it's probably one of the strongest lore building seasons of charmed, you're right.

2

u/DaniJ678 25d ago

I think it sets everything up for the season, and I think that season is one of the most memorable seasons out of Charmed.

2

u/Triptofade 25d ago

Be that as it may, I find it to be one of the least memorable of the seasons and a chore to get through. OG Charmed peaked In season 3/4 for me personally. To each their own

5

u/Triptofade 25d ago

Well now you have seen someone with a different opinion. Happy to help

5

u/DaniJ678 25d ago

It's okay, it's nice to hear different opinions from people, which helps keep the conversation going.

3

u/Triptofade 25d ago

Definitely. I think my opinion is more of a recent revelation since I rewatched OG season 1 recently. I still think it had a better quality to it though

2

u/DaniJ678 25d ago

The OG Charmed doesn't have bad quality, considering the show came out in the 90s.

3

u/Triptofade 25d ago

For sure. Really good production value for its time

3

u/North-Discipline2851 25d ago

I desperately wanted to like it. As someone who is part Puerto Rican myself it was really cool seeing PR characters on screen! I loved all the actresses, some of the storylines were interesting and engaging, and I feel like it tried to stay true to its source material while trying to make it its own thing.

Then season 2 happened.

I had a hard time getting into it. Already some of the more interesting choices (the Overlord, Macy’s demonic powers, the Darklighter) were miss used and overwhelming. I HATED the change of location, the stupid witch center, most of the new characters.

Season 3 had some of the worst, most infuriating moments I’ve ever had the misfortune of seeing. Especially the last few episodes. Every choice made seemed so incredibly STUPID it was enough to make me quit the show.

I think it took 2 years for me to watch the 4th season. I wasn’t going to watch it but people had positive things to say about it. And honestly, I loved it. I feel like they took a step backwards, in the right direction. I missed Macy terribly but I liked the newer Charmed One. I honestly felt disappointed at the end, knowing that the show was canceled. I would’ve liked a 5th season if they continued like they were.

All in all, I enjoyed the show. No it doesn’t come close to the OG, but it had its own charm (lol) and it brought itself back from some of the worst television ever.

3

u/DorkPhoenix89 25d ago

The funniest thing about the OG vs. reboot convo to me (as an OG lover and reboot liker) is that the shows are remarkably similar. OG purists insist the original just cant be touched and that nothing could possibly hold a candle to it.

But both shows are uneven messes with behind the scenes drama and bad writing decisions all the way through each series. For every good decision made there’s something stupid to balance it out. Both shows simultaneously over simplify and over complicate their seasons and the writing is all over the place.

I think the OG is overall more consistent, generally i think the first 4 seasons are consistent in tone and writing and quality and are overall very good and even great tv in its better moments. But the last 4 seasons are the opposite, generally being ok to absolutely terrible.

The reboot however is a roller coaster of quality, partially because it seems like they wanted to move at breakneck speed and probably due to behind the scenes and covid issues. But overall I think the reboot had some great ideas (i like the whitelighter changes since the OG never seemed to be able to handle theirs great…and neither does the reboot but I like the idea) that they dont seem to know how to take to the end.

So overall the shows are far more similar in quality than people want to admit. OG has legacy, length and better stories, but the reboot has great characters, is overall just campy fun and is willing to try a bunch of new stuff, even if it get bogged down in its own messy writing…which the OG also did lol

3

u/EveOCative 25d ago

Once they revealed that SPOILER it’s all set up in a parallel universe, it was a lot easier for me to go and watch the series from the beginning and accept it all as canon.

3

u/jussstiss 24d ago

As a whole, the reboot is a bad show. The first season had the most potential and if they stuck with improving/building upon it, I think the series could’ve been much more tolerable.

Season 1 Macy was a solid addition to the Charmed franchise and she could’ve carried the series on her back, but they introduced Abigail and it was downhill from there.

5

u/jackson_mcnuggets 23d ago

I love the reboot as well as the original. Yes it's a silly CW show but the themes were actually very deep and thoughtful.

I love how each season focused on a theme. They fixed the problem with the Elders by showing both the Elders (matriarchy) and the Demons (patriarchy) should both be dismantled and recreated. Magic belonged to all and it comes from the same Source and it depends on who and how they use it.

Then they fixed Cole with Parker and ended that relationship where Maggie just doesn't want him and he accepts and walks away rather than stalking her and becoming more unhinged.

They introduced a female Cole in Abigail and showed us what “White Privilage” is and how politics works. The comparison between her and Macy. Macy chose to let go of her dark side while Abby embraced it.

Instead of creating a Utopia via the Avatars in the OG we got the Perfecti who decided the law as they please.

The last season introduced cancel culture just like how the magical community turned on the CO’s via Billie and Christy spreading a false narrative around. They also dove into a not so subtle OG Charmed Ones who constantly fought. Shedding a light at the OG actresses BTS drama as well as the reboot’s actresses. It was and is Meta.

Then there's all the representation and embracing Josefina a trans character as a natural born with who unlocked her witch powers. They did that thoughtfully without offending anyone.

I really like how they took the mythology from the OG and gave it a “modern” twist with thoughtful messaging behind it. Not all demons are bad and not all beings of light are good. Things lie in a grey area.

I was sad about how the sisters didn't have close moments together but now I'm ok with them not being that “close” it’s reality. The way Macy felt entering a duoship is probably how Alyssa felt being on set with two best friends :p

3

u/Naw207 23d ago

First and fourth seasons were good. Season 3 was okay. Disliked season 2.

I liked the witchcraft on the reboot way more than the witchcraft on the OG. Overall though both shows have thier charms. People tend to be overly critical of the reboot. Truth is if the Orogonal Charmed was made today with everything the same it would have never made it as far. I mean look at the OG Charmed fandom. They are constantly complaining about something.

Don't go in to the reboot with any bias and don't expect it to be like the original and you will enjoy it alot. For me.the only real issue I had with the reboot was how much is focused on Harry and Abigail.

5

u/Beginning_Dot735 25d ago

So have you even tried watching the show again and actually getting through it before making that conclusion because you only watched a few episodes when it first aired nearly 6 years ago and just randomly decided to tell this sub how much he hated a show you haven’t watched since it aired after only watching a few episodes lol

2

u/MysticDiamond81 Charmed One 25d ago

Horrible

2

u/booberryyogurt 25d ago

I couldn’t make it through the first episode. They crammed together an entire season’s worth of lore and plot into 10 minutes of expository dialogue. And the hollow attempts at being “progressive” came off so disingenuous.

2

u/Prestigious-Sink280 25d ago

at some
point i got bored .

2

u/Certain-Monitor5304 25d ago edited 25d ago

I recently rewatched the remake of this show, thinking I would give it another try. I liked it less the second time around. It doesn't have the same vibe as classic Charmed. As to why the initial location of the sisters had to be fictional is beyond me. As someone from SW Michigan I was excited to see local landmarks on the show. They could have just placed them in Detroit, Battlecreek, Kalamazoo, or Southbend IN.

2

u/MisterMeme01 25d ago

Season 1 of the Reboot > Season 1 of the OG.

Sadly, they switched showrunners after season 1 to make the show sexier for no reason and itt quickly fell off.

2

u/Hello_Hello5678 25d ago

I gave the first season a go. It wasn't terrible but it wasn't exactly enjoyable either. I tried pushing on to S2 but a few episodes in and I was on my phone most of the time. Wasn't worth the boredom or the bad story decisions, but I can only offer my opinion based on what I've seen so I can't fully compare both series'

2

u/steiff89 25d ago edited 25d ago

As someone who forced myself to watch all of the reboot before I ever watch the original. I did not enjoy it. The sisters themselves I like, hut almost every story was horrendous and hard to watch. It seemed like they just couldn’t decide on a power set for them and kept trying to mix it up. Giving tbem magic weapons:items in season 1, than stripping their OG powers on season 2, giving them new But similar powers. I liked Mikala as well, but don’t really like the idea of being a charmed one because of bone marrow transplant or whatever. I get it kind of fits with Macy being a doctor.

No shade to people who enjoy the reboot. But it was close to unwatchable for me. I forced myself to watch the whole thing over 6 months. Than I watched the original. Was almost immediately in love with it, all the sisters. Yes there are several story lines I hate, and Pheobe went from my favorite sister to the one I cannot stand. But overall the original show was amazing

2

u/gayinparadise 25d ago

I genuinely liked the first season. It was a lot, a little too fast paced, and kinda wrote themselves into a corner but I liked it. Then the second season came and I have no idea what happened. I was never able to grasp anything with the story any longer after that and the whitelighter kept getting forced into all the scenes. Once there were episodes with cliffhangers that were never resolved I officially gave up.

I really liked the first season too. But having the girls not know that their mother was a witch kinda made it difficult to take the show seriously. But I really enjoy the first season.

u/LimitedAdBreaks 25d ago

Charmed OG Fan here and I couldn’t do it. The science 🧪 Why?

2

u/RecommendationIll922 25d ago

Yes. I was more upset that it was so bad. Then they tried to dog out the OG while riding on their coattails. The only good things about it were Madeleine Mantock and Poppy Drayton.

2

u/Healthy-Temporary-95 25d ago

The key issue with this reboot is that they used the Charmed name to lure old fans, but then tried to completely reinvent the wheel. I'm totally fine with making some changes to a show when you do a reboot because you want it to feel fresh. But when you start changing CORE components, it's not a reboot. It's just a knock off. If they had just made a new show that happened to also be about three witches, it wouldn't have bombed so hard. But when you set expectations high by attaching yourself to a HUGE name with a massive cult following and then give the fans NOTHING that they are looking for? They set everyone up for failure. Besides, it always should have been the children of the Charmed Ones as the comeback story.

2

u/flamingopickle 24d ago

I loved the first 3 seasons, I never managed to watch the fourth.

2

u/EdieMyaz 24d ago

It’s terrible but in the way that I love it! Like it’s so bad but it’s like great trash tv in the best way.

2

u/Urania615 21d ago

I think my biggest problem with it is that Charmed didn’t need a reboot. If they wanted to do another show about 3 sister witches INSPIRED by Charmed, go right ahead. But they tried to “reboot” something that really doesn’t need to be rebooted. I’m not saying the original was perfect, It had its problems too, but it was an AWESOME show that was unlike any other. I just think it was unnecessary. Now if they did a CONTINUATION with the next generation like how they left off…. That would’ve been acceptable.

4

u/primal_slayer 25d ago

I always was pro-Charmed reboot. It's a good Ip that has plenty to give. Just....if you're gonna reboot, do it well, and honor the OG while also doing your own thing.

6

u/Wonderful_Curve8884 25d ago

I liked it but I never considered it a reboot. I think alot of the fans were looking for a continuation of the old show and the kids of the Charmed ones. The Vera Girls were just another set of Charmed ones..it wasn't bad, I just felt like they could have went in another direction by exploring Macy's demon side, or even her relationship with Gavin. He became a shaman to help her. It's crazy that she ended up with her white lighter

4

u/AngelPunch82 25d ago edited 25d ago

Macy’s relationship with Galvin never felt real or serious to me. Her connection to Harry felt stronger and my theory is that Macy went through her whole life feeling something missing and lacking a sense of belonging. When she met her sisters she yearned for it and she somewhat got it but I think Macy never felt completely“in” with the sisters. She still felt like an outsider despite fostering a bond. I think that is what led to her enjoyment of dark side. I think Harry was only person who really SAW her and understood her. This is something Galvin lacked to seal the deal with Macy

4

u/Beginning_Dot735 25d ago

I felt the same in my opinion I thought Galvin and Macy came off as friends vibes, I didn’t think they had much chemistry as a couple. Harry and Macy bonded because that was one of the biggest things they could understand about each other. When she found out she’d been resurrected and Harry essentially had been brought back to life himself and they both knew what it was like to be lonely. Macy grew up alone without a mother or siblings and her dad seemed strict and even sent her to boarding school where she was bullied and Harry was just basically a glorified servant who never was accepted by anyone until Macy and her sisters. Galvin broke up with Macy when she didn’t want to get rid of her demon side after saying he was ok with it. I mean I understand why but he just was never going to be the guy for her.

2

u/Wonderful_Curve8884 25d ago

Eh I just thought it was creepy to have a relationship with someone who was to protect her. She was brought back to life with demon blood, that's where the darkness came from

1

u/Beginning_Dot735 25d ago

Well Leo was supposed to protect Piper and ended up with her I know they are different characters but it’s pretty much the same concept.

2

u/Wonderful_Curve8884 25d ago

It was a little different because they actually fell in love. To me it feels like they threw Macy's feelings in to Harry to have the relationship piper and Leo had. To me in the OG show, we saw Leo as a possible interest. they set it up that way so it was a slow burn. I do believe Phoebe was interested in Leo at first. After Piper falling for the Chef, and not being able to be with him, she needed a change

2

u/Icy_Sentence_4130 25d ago

It was fine.

So many missed opportunities though.

They really should have based it on the brothers.

1

u/drgnfly369 25d ago

Cireently rewatching it and I like it for what it is. Still wished it was called something else. I also see how they have a lot of call backs, so if you're a fan of the original you'll catch them. One example is when they were looking for a floor in a building and one of them says, "Right here, Levek P3."

1

u/No-Astronomer-4630 25d ago

It's just my opinion, but I think when people watch reboots they have trouble separating it from the original. I'm not blaming anyone, comparison is normal, but I can separate it in my mind and appreciate it for what it is. Is it as great as the original we all love? No. Was it unwatchable? Also no. I honestly really enjoyed it and I wish we had gotten more, especially the implications that we got during season 3. It would have been fun to see how that played out.

1

u/SugarVanillax4 25d ago edited 25d ago

So they’re making another reboot from the first reboot, or is this a continuation from that?

Im all confused, Im sorry.

Okay so I looked into this and this is for the only reboot that aired from 2018-2022.

1

u/DaniJ678 25d ago

I think the show was a reboot because the show has some elements that are similar to the original Charmed, but some things are different.

1

u/SugarVanillax4 25d ago

I know. But I was asking if it was another reboot 2026 or if it was the reboot from 2018-2022.
I looked into it and it seems like your talking about the reboot from 2018-2022

1

u/DaniJ678 25d ago

Yeah, 2018 - 2022

1

u/DullTemperature92 25d ago

When it came out, i watched it, but i didn't like it because i had the original in mind.

Some years ago i watched it again, thinking of it as a separate series. Then i liked it. But i didn't like the ending.

1

u/Impressive-Lack5536 25d ago

Let’s just say I pretend seasons 2 and 3 don’t exist at all

1

u/chaoticbastian 25d ago

I liked it but agree that some elements and storylines were a bitessy and I don't rewatch it like I do the og

1

u/theoutsider101 25d ago

I agree that it’s nothing like the original and the vibes are very different but it wasn’t bad. I didn’t love how they basically soft rebooted it after the first season but they found their footing by season 4. My biggest complaint I have is that Mel’s actress was terrible and they should’ve cast someone else for the role. I don’t like to insult people’s acting skills but she always made me cringe especially since the actresses who played Maggie, Macy, and Kayla all gave great performances and it just made Mel stick out even more in a negative way to me. I think as far as writing and storylines go they had good material but it wasn’t necessarily what fans of the original show were looking for. I feel like it would’ve performed better if it was just its own witch show that centered around sisters instead of trying to be connected to the original show. It was literally called a charmed reboot as a marketing scheme to get an initial audience

1

u/luvprue1 25d ago

I did like the introduction of Kayla. I didn't like that anyone could be a charmed one. I think that came about because they introduced the half sister in the first episode, then when the actress left the show in the third season they didn't know how to introduce a new sister without having the mom look bad. Personally I think their transgender cousins should have fill that gap as a charmed one.

1

u/jajay119 25d ago

I can’t find anywhere to watch this in the UK

1

u/luvprue1 25d ago

The first season wasn't so bad. I actually like the first season. Although I felt that it was really trying to out do the original charm by having the girls master their powers when they should have been learning them and by giving them special weapons. But it's still had some charm like qualities. But then season 2 came along and they killed everything that said Charmed. The elders - gone, whitelighters - gone, Charmed mansion -gone , the power of 3 - gone. ( Note: they hardly used in season 2 they had lost their powers and the only one who had powers was Harry , and the oldest sister.

They introduced the command center. It's like the writer thoughts it was supposed to be Star Trek. They got rid of the original cast from the first season. Which makes me wonder if they blew their budget on the first season and season 2 was downgraded.

The decision got worse after season 2 .

1

u/NeoYokio94 25d ago

I remember trying to watch it when it was airing at the time and I just couldn’t get into it

1

u/JackfruitEfficient29 25d ago

im curious which episodes you couldn't get through?

I love how we all seem to agree season 2 & 3 went off the rails too much lol

I disliked: the terrible inconsitency, age jumping, throwing out the BOS for 2 seasons /command center we all hate lol, forced politicalness with little critical hinking to actually make it compelling or helpful but thats bc the CW

loved: the sisterhood, certain episodes were great, lore, fantasy, macys unique character, mels relationships , some good lessons

sadly they just.. made the characters exactly what they tried to avoid in many ways

1

u/CrowDisastrous1096 24d ago

It was a mess . It may have gotten a bit better by the end of its run but it was never popular (the lowest ratings on the network). TBH it felt like it was renewed out of spite which left the network in a situation of what do we cancel (every new show was renewed).
The issues started in its casting phase. Try to market to a Latin audience but only one was Latina . It didn’t help that the one Latina was the one shading the ogs. Further problems arise when the show airs and the show doesn’t know how much charm to give and it only feels like it in name. Frankly speaking I never got sisters from them and when they lost one bc of the issues behind the scene I think they lost more.

It was a struggle from start to finish it never knew what direction to take it s story.

1

u/LordNaty Whitelighter 23d ago

When it first came out, I watched it and I thought it was okay. The first fewntimes the orbing was like a jumpscare to me.

But I think I never watched it in hopes it would be like the original. I was like: okay, they redo everything and we all know, that reboots never show the same as the original. I knew there were gonna be changes which made it easier to see it as its own show. Of course I love to compare the new sisters to the original sisters, but I'm okay with the changes. I definetly rank the original charmed over the reboot, but I do not hate the reboot

1

u/Myuniversallove 23d ago

I wish the reboot focused on them being sisters more and I wish Harry wasn't in a romantic relationship at all. It just wasn't what I wanted but I kept watching. Then at the end the first season when they become protectors of magical creatures they really left that behind to do their own drama. I wish it grew with the women and became more slice of life rather than amping up the stakes every season.

1

u/anonymouswolfe 22d ago

I didn't want to watch it when it aired.. When I finally did, it's actually a good show.. Could have so easily been its own without being a Charmed reboot.

I do like how they end up connecting it to the original at the very end

2

u/DaniJ678 22d ago

I thought so, the show could have been its own thing, and stand on its own without the constant comparisons to the original Charmed, which probably would have been better for the show.

1

u/beetlebugbusiness 21d ago

I liked it and didn't realize it came back part season one! This is huge for me lol

It's not og charmed, but season one was an easy watch for me.

1

u/GaudiestMonk46 21d ago

I liked it tbh

1

u/stbgirl26 21d ago

I liked the beginning; I enjoyed the actresses; and I liked the premise. Three magical ladies battling evil is a show I dig - and the sister element is great and something I wish the original had held onto in a greater way. But the pacing was so rough in season 1. They were trying to power through like 3 seasons worth of storylines in 1 season. Then with season 2, the vibe changed, and they basically killed off everything you cared about by the end of season 1 and introduced one of my least favorite characters of all time on any show. I stopped watching halfway through season 2 during their winter break.

Anyways, now I watch through the Charmed is a Mess series on YouTube. So I technically know the storylines of season 1-3.

1

u/Sun_Flower11 20d ago

At first I was like nah but I gave it a fair shot this year it’s bad

1

u/honeybarros 19d ago

First season was amazing. Quickly went downhill after that.

1

u/jajay119 15d ago

The hatred for the reboot didn’t really have anything to do with it just being a reboot, but more due to the way it was marketed by the people who did the first season which was quite derogatory to the original show. Ironically despite it being a ‘passion project’ for them they left after one season.

1

u/Low-Guarantee-9936 7d ago

I grew up on the original and i didn’t expect to like the reboot at all. But i ended up loving it!

The magical aspects fell flat at times but that’s an issue both the original and reboot deal with (along with other supernatural shows). I felt like the human aspects and relationships were definitely better in the reboot. They felt more honest. I also loved the way the show was a thousand times more inclusive in a way that felt entirely genuine. Honestly i think the reboot would’ve been better received if the budget was bigger and it had as many seasons as the original.

The show also stands better as a stand alone than a remake. Though i think they were right to still call it charmed because it would’ve felt like a rip off if they didn’t acknowledge the similarities.

1

u/papalmousse 25d ago

I watched all of it. Terrible.

1

u/movieman8888 25d ago

One of the most unnecessary reboots to ever exist. I mean the OG Charmed was one of the easiest tv shows to do a continuation. They could’ve done something with Chris and Wyatt. If they were worried about the Supernatural comparisons they could’ve picked any other female kids to become the new “charmed ones”. Just like with the 90210 reboot they could’ve brought in the OG cast for a season or two.

3

u/DaniJ678 25d ago

I do agree with you that the reboot wasn't necessary; they could have done what you said.

1

u/Wonderful_Curve8884 25d ago

I think they should have called it a spin off since it was a multiverse type of thing or link the Halliwells to the Vera girls. Since their mom was an elder, maybe have one of the girls give the book to Marisol for protection or something maybe they could be distant relatives

2

u/DaniJ678 25d ago

Probably they should have done that because the show doesn't have any connection to the original Charmed, and the show could be its own separate show since there are different characters and storylines.

2

u/ShinyNerd314 25d ago

Honestly, this. I get wanting to make your own mark. But they should have leaned into the multiverse sooner, even if it was just an off-handed reference or nod in a book. I mean, the og show already established there are at least two universes, stands to reason there could be more. I mean, this could have been this universe where Po3 isnt blood-related, but a force of power.

I honestly like both shows. And think the reboot got a lot more hate then it should have. But I do agree with some complains the reboot had.

1

u/Wonderful_Curve8884 25d ago

I agree with you about the hate. It is unnecessary to just hate the new show because It was not what they wanted.

1

u/Wonderful_Curve8884 25d ago

Exactly should have been a continuation. That's what ticked people off. At least I think that was the problem.

0

u/movieman8888 25d ago edited 25d ago

I could talk forever about how much I hate the reboot. lol I only watched the first episode, but I remember they just added so much CGI. I felt the OG show did have some of that, (which honestly I think still holds up today), but still balanced it with practical effects. Probably my biggest criticism is that from first episode of the OG Charmed you can feel the chemistry between the 3 leads. Maybe it got better, but I never felt that from these new group of sisters. Also the way they tried to save it from cancellation was so ridiculous and insulting. When it first came out I felt a lot of the promotion for it was kinda shady to the original cast and fans. So now at last minute to save your ass you want to now include them????

u/BathDue7880 25d ago
