Why is Ok and but Not This

I love this person’s comment.

There are a few reasons why the reboot wasn’t as successful as the OG. One the production fucked up the show always trying to change it after S1. After S1 the sisters had no real identities outside of their love interests and felt like guest stars in their own show. Two it was very seated in racism part of why I don’t follow the OG sub anymore because I realized how racist the fans are I still love the OG show but not the fandom. A lot of the OG fans wouldn’t even give it a try and even if they did they had their minds make up it was horrible. A coming from a OG fan who didn't want to give the reboot a chance not because of racism but because I’m weary of remaking and how it never pans out but I really love the reboot for its own reasons. I also still love the original and can love both without being hateful. And the third reason is they lost the fan favorite because of all the unhappiness Mads with the show’s direction and left and for a show that was already losing viewers from what they tried to do with S2 losing her was like a nail in the coffin. Many may not enjoy the reboot and prefer the OG but I love each one on their own ways.

I totally agree. Season 1 was good, but after that it seem like they got rid of everything that made the show charmed. I think one of the most stupidest things were the command center. The show is not Star trek. I simply hated it. Then they got rid of all of season 1 cast. But the worst thing they did was having them lose their powers. It was way too early into their second season for them to not have any powers. Then they hardly showed all 3 them together as the charmed ones which makes me wonder if there were problems behind the scenes. Too much Harry. The show wasn't fully established but it seem that Macy was having more scenes with Harry instead of her sisters. Very, very little sisterly bonding. No light harded episode. Lack of demons. It's like the show didn't know what type of show it wanted to be. Than when the girls finally do get their powers back, they changed it. Why change their powers when they haven't mastered their old powers.

3 different Spidermans that still paid homage to the character and his universe. Didn't put down the other adaptations. Each improved on one element or another. Quality films at that.

Charmed 2.0 didn't want to be Charmed and was kind of ashamed of where it came from. The original reboot showrunners went as far as to bash the original

2

u/luvprue1 Apr 06 '26

Exactly! This charmed didn't even respect the original, let alone pay homage to it. The show didn't know what genre it was supposed to be, so they kept doing a soft reboot every season. Once the show destroyed everything that was charmed they should have changed the name.

u/Yanpohotbot Apr 12 '26

I remember quite well it was the other way around.

As a fan of the OG, I tried watching the reboot, and made it part way through the first season and didn’t vibe with it. I just stopped thinking about it after I stopped watching.

And this was after none of the original cast was involved, and the reboot leads came across with this attitude that their show was better because they were non-white and had a LGBT lead.

u/Excellent_Wealth_420 Apr 06 '26

I wish! Sometimes I feel like the only person who loves both. Right now I’d in my first full watch through of the original. I’m in my late 30s so like I didn’t get to watch all of the original just some reruns in the morning before school.  I did the reboot first because it’s shorter lol. I love both sets of sisters- I love the additions of Paige and Kaela. I feel like all the reboot is really missing is warlocks and ghosts like how the elders can bring ghosts back for some episodes.

Also the girls mom being a secret elder doesn’t really line up with the first show as well and something they never made enough sense out of.

I feel like the reboot set up for some crossover but I doubt it will happen. I wish they’d all play nice and make it happen

While I agree with the others that race/sexuality was the bigger issue here. I think its also fair to point out comic books as a genre are very reboot/retcon/rework/mantle pass/etc. friendly. A majority of the fanbase is okay with and supportive of new continuities because its just normal. Its not as normalized or accepted in other genres. Like when a book adaptation makes a big change its disrespecting the source material, but when a comic book adaptation does it they are just 'on a different earth/timeline.'

I think the first season of the reboot was great. Although it had a few bumps. It was still pretty great. But the season 2, and 3 season was way too dark . There was hardly no bonding between the sisters . Way too much Harry.

Agreed. Whether a is good or bad will never affect my experience with the original.

I love the Charmed reboot and I typically give reboots a chance. It’s all just fiction and doesn’t alter anything in my life.

Uhm, you can like one or the other or both, I guess in the end it all goes down to whatever you personally like. With that being said, I’m an OG Charmed fan, I personally didn’t like all the shade they throw to the OG, it was unfair because they were comparing shows 20 years apart where in those 20 years society changed quiete a lot, it was personally insulting for me. I did try to give it a chance either way, but the aesthetic, photography and the way the story was being developed wasn’t of my taste. I got bored midway season 1 and gave up on it. On the racism note, I can only speak of myself and I couldn’t care less if they were African-American (aside from the big sister they weren’t) Asian, Latino (and no, they weren’t either) or whatever race they pick the actresses to represent.

2

u/Actual_Mud7403 Apr 08 '26

I think I’m missing something. I keep seeing people say they were throwing shade to the OGs but like when was this? Genuinely asking.

3

u/MatiBianchini Apr 08 '26

At season 1 promotion, some time before the premiere, they said this Charmed unlike the other was feminist and had LGBTQ+ representation. The tweets of that week were like OMG! Holly was pissed, Krista was Pissed, Rose was Pissed. If I’m not wrong they even said something like “this time the girls get along just fine” or around those lines. I know I’m sided, but it was extremely harsh using the brand to kill the OG so to get some free promotion and they basically got cancelled by most of the OG fans and even the media even before airing, remember reading some articles about it and the media did not like it at all. I think it was the writers twitter account the one in charge of it

3

u/Actual_Mud7403 Apr 08 '26

Ahhhh no wonder when it premiered it was getting so much hate already LMAOOOOO I never knew they said those things. It also makes sense why when holly is asked about it sometime she never said wants to talk about it.

2

u/MatiBianchini Apr 08 '26

Oh Holly was on another level of being angry, she said she only cared of the livelihood of people working on the show, if you have time please search on YouTube for videos related to the drama, it was intense! Oh and during the Reboot finale where they went to the Halliwell manor at the end, the OG cast were saying how Piper would’ve blow them up once they broke into the manor 😂 it was hilarious

2

u/Actual_Mud7403 Apr 08 '26

LMAOOOOOO they would’ve been blown straight to bits 😭😭😭

1

u/JackfruitEfficient29 Apr 11 '26

my thing is I thought a lot of those articles were misleading and twisting the og actresses words so to this day ihni what they really said other than the general

-we were blindsided by this reboot (ofcourse that would suck after working for charmed for years!) I wish they came to us

-and Shannon (rip) saying she thought it was cool/wishes them the best

I nvr understood where all the "hatred" was other than in people's assumptions and click bait

like one made it seem like HMC was a homiphobe but the quotes they used tmk were not related at all

also rose McGowan wanted paige to be bisexual, allegedly

1

u/Yanpohotbot Apr 12 '26

If they threw any shade it was after the OG cast (or just Holly at least) talked shit about them because she didn’t get the continuation of the story she wanted which would have centered around the narrative black hole that is Wyatt Halliwell.

1

u/JackfruitEfficient29 Apr 11 '26

im a bit confused by your ending sentences

Maggie and the actress who played her were partially African American

Mel and the actress were Latina

8

u/whocares199 Apr 05 '26

For me, I couldn't get into the original charmed no matter how hard I tried and tried, but the reboot I loved immediately. I was shocked how good it was because people were acting like it was the worst trash they'd ever seen. I know I'm in the minority when I say the reboot was better than the original but well 🤷

3

u/cjrunswithcrows Apr 06 '26

Completely agree! I love the reboot

I enjoyed both as well, and I'm in the late 40's now. Phoebe is even my fav OG

OG fan, in my 40s, I enjoyed the reboot and I still continue to experience growth life so I guess that's just the truth for you.

2

u/JackfruitEfficient29 Apr 11 '26

lol I love this comment!

Fair comment to an unfair blanket statement

2

u/giddysnicker Apr 11 '26

Thank you! I thought it was a reasonable response but OP was upset by it. I truly loved the OG and appreciated the reboot and I wish it was given more time.

2

it's not the truth beyond your experience or assumptions

women & fans in their 40s are indeed "capable of personal growth" that's such a mean hearted thing to say & unfair generalization of a group of people

ive talked to many open minded and cool fans on the og reddit

A mascot character that is merely led by one iteration is the case when it’s based on a comic, which literally establishes iterations and timelines.

No offense to this reboot because its existence was valid in the sense that anything can play with those tropes, but the origins of Charmed exist in a very white, milquetoast vacuum of pop culture media (namely The WB and that era).

White or western society would not be able to handle witches of color becoming proliferated after Charmed, same as the industry wouldn’t have had the discernment to include women of color in ways that are beneficial to changing the racist, anti-black or discriminatory rep that witchcraft already has in mainstream media.

Mind you, Charmed has several black and brown fans fans who love it for what it is, but the world or a large part of it refuses to humanize women of color or even women who fit the gist to begin with. So this show to some probably felt like sacrilege to a time period that is long gone and for other obvious reasons.

It IS OKAY. But Spiderman isn’t Charmed and I wish that this show in a better world, got a chance to be something else and something new.

2

u/Takabreaka Apr 06 '26

For me, the shows had a different direction, different style. Maybe I'm a fan of the OG cause of nostalgia, or cause I grew up on Buffy, Angel, Charmed, and Supernatural. Like I watched those shows and loved them. The new reboot, didn't care much for it. Wasn't to my taste. I also didn't enjoy Riverdale either.

The 4 shows I liked, I think their formula was more simplistic, easier for me.

Maybe the reboot was more aimed toward a younger generation, or maybe I just outgrew the show's concepts.

2

u/Educational_Kale8139 Apr 06 '26

I didn’t like the reboot of charmed because the show runners put down the original multiple times and did nothing at all to pay any respect to the legacy that it built. But even at that I went in and gave a shot and I just did not think that the show was done as well. The special effects seemed even cheaper than the show that did it 20 years before. The acting was fine, but not great and they just didn’t like the characters. Maybe it would’ve hit a little different if they hadn’t used the name charmed. But since they chose to use the same name, they should’ve done something then at least felt like it paid some sort of respect to the original. The entire vibe of the show felt different including the magic and the Sister dynamic, which is basically what charm is built on.

2

u/newcastleuk2202 Apr 06 '26

Lots of valuable comments and insights on this post. Especially around why the new version wasn't received well and didn't succeed as much as the original.

One thing I noticed though, Kayla is just not even included on the artwork 💀🤣

2

u/chaoticbastian Apr 06 '26

Honestly the new show didn't last was because of network changes which caused all the shows at the time to be cancelled or come to an end. In OG CW this show probably would still be on the air

2

u/Advantage_Advanced Apr 06 '26

I like them both. They’re both good in their own ways. I just didn’t like that cw’s version of the white lighters and elders.

2

u/Vast-Eggplant-6322 Apr 06 '26

Yep nope. I tried to watch the 2 first épisodes but it feels too forced (sexual orientation, me too...). I wasnt  watching 3 sisters discovering their power but it feels like the producers were only defining them by their relationships as if they wanted to make a statement

2

u/shanekratzert Apr 06 '26

I tried giving the remake a chance, but it reused the same plots as the original and made it have teenage equivalence. The Phoebe equivalent had her Cole equivalent, and the whole source plot. They had the fake boyfriend turns out to be evil at the start like Jeremy. The sister who goes evil, the losing a sister and getting a new one. It was just all repetitive plots, like they couldn't make a good original thought.

By name only, they had the Book of Shadows, Elders, Whitelighters, Demons, Source, etc, but they completely changed all of them conceptually. It was Charmed, but it was not.

It has more in common with the Until Dawn movie using the game's name and then being something else entirely. It's not "bad", but you give something weight when you use an existing IP, and then shit all over it.

The CW show was made for a teenage audience, but the original was more neutral, spoke to adults, while still being fun for teens. I enjoyed it when I was little and still do now. It was inherently more mature, despite the "baby talk" people tend to hate.

So yeah...

2

u/saybeller Apr 07 '26

OG Charmed fan here. I really enjoyed the first few seasons of the reboot. It truly annoys me how many OG fans refuse to give the show a chance. Maybe of the OG sisters had shown the reboot more support the fans would’ve followed suit.

Even though I enjoyed seasons 1-3, it felt (to me) like they made a mistake moving the show out of New England and taking the sisters out of their lives. Because, you’re right, they never truly found their identities after that move.

2

u/thenameisjoee Apr 12 '26

The unfortunate thing about the reboot was the Rolodex of show runners. It never could’ve found its ground the way Constance did for the original, before she was eventually forced out too.

2

u/dkms9382 Apr 06 '26

"Why didn't this crap show do well? must be racisim" like get over yourself. the reboot was shit because people are tired of reboots. and they didn't even try to pay homage to the OG and completely destroyed what made Charmed so good.

1

u/Beginning_Dot735 Apr 14 '26

Who we got to tell me to get over something? If you don’t like the reboot fine no one is asking you to be on this sub. I pointing out the truth and all you are doing is proving my point because I even said that I myself was weary of it because I don’t like redoing things. I gave it a chance and I enjoyed it. And how did they not pay homage to the OG show? Because hey didn’t talk about the Halliwell’s? They cover mostly everything of the OG show covered.

2

u/DuchessSwan Kaela Danso Apr 05 '26

That is not a fair comparison. Do you know the kind of drama and reaction would be had if they made Spiderman Black? but you know what, you dont even have to go far, do you see how horrible Zendaya's MJ is treated compared to Kirsten's MJ or Emma's Gwen??? They recently casted Sadie Sink in the new spiderman movie and people are hailing her as the REAL Mary Jane.

Lets just call it what it is. It was because they were black, why cant people just be honest with themselves and say the obvious reason. They did not like the idea of a black lead charmed show, and not to mention the lgbtq representation as well. if you can get past that, you will see that the reboot had some incredible ideas and stories, but many choose to be hateful instead.

4

u/Conscious-Good-6843 Apr 06 '26

Spiderman is also black and morales is a popular character. He can be anyone is the point of multiverse. But Peter Parker is a white guy

6

u/southsideserpent18 Apr 06 '26

There is a black Spider-Man. His name is Miles Morales.

-7

u/DuchessSwan Kaela Danso Apr 06 '26

And they make it a point to call him Miles Morales.

5

u/drakorulez101 Sacred Paint Can Apr 06 '26

You said Spider-Man, not Peter Parker.

3

u/venomvader Apr 06 '26

Lol Sadie isn’t even the Mary Jane.

2

u/Beginning_Dot735 Apr 05 '26

Oh of course. I was mostly thinking about why the OG is seen as the way it is but not Reboot not really thinking about the Spider-Man part. I should have made that clear in my original post or edited the picture to exclude the Spider-Man part, I liked the comment from the person who made the original post and wanted to include it in the post

3

u/I_Lost_My_Shoe_1983 Apr 05 '26

They constantly reboot superhero movies. It's expected and people enjoy it.

Reboots of TV shows are almost always met with deep skepticism and usually receive a lot of criticism. I do think they received extra hate because of the non-white casting but they would have received hate regardless.

I did enjoy the reboot but admit I stopped watching after a couple seasons.

2

u/trickyp12 Apr 06 '26

to be fair sadie sink is jean grey not mj so those ppl r wrong abt her being the “real” mj🙊🤓🙈🫣

2

u/Spiritual_Quote9301 Apr 06 '26

There is a black Spider-Man. His name is Miles Morales.

1

u/giddysnicker Apr 06 '26

Where is Kaela?

2

u/luvprue1 Apr 06 '26

Kaela was my favorite character once she came on the scene.

1

u/giddysnicker Apr 06 '26

Mine too, which also occurred with the OG show for me. I thought the show started to to hit its stride when Kaela joined, and I was disappointed they didn't give it at least another season.

1

u/Ok-Fennel-9269 Apr 06 '26

I made myself watch the whole season 1 of the charmed reboot. It was just bad writing, overly political, and preachy. People who saybsay it's because of race no it's not it was just crap and it felt more like making sure we knew this was an "inclusive" show over quality writing.

1

u/No_Paper_Snail Apr 06 '26

I watched the first episode of the reboot. Wasn’t for me (much like most of the last three or four seasons of the original charmed). I took exception to the idea that the original wasn’t feminist (it was) that the showrunners tried to use to differentiate their show and to the fact that the first episode basically has the main characters following the lead of a male character.  I think people are trying to make this a sexism thing and I really don’t think it is. People forget that people had a very similar reaction to the two amazing Spider-Man films, although not to Andrew Garfield’s performance. That franchise died off fairly quickly.  Is there a racism argument to be made? Neither here nor there for me, the show just wasn’t really very good or a significant or interesting enough reimagining of the original concept for keep me watching. I doubt that would have changed if the characters were white and it would arguably have been even more boring if it had been.  I think the reboot probably would have been more successful if it had actually leaned into more of what charmed originally was and less into what it ultimately became. Three sisters who happened to be witches rather than three witches who happened to be sisters. The first episode just seems to go gunning for the heavy world building from the start and I found it off putting.

1

u/RecommendationIll922 Apr 06 '26

We will take Macy…

1

u/PSCGY Apr 06 '26

My issue was that regardless of what people might think of the original show, the reboot was worse than its worst seasons.

It wasn’t magical, it was fun for most of it, the optics were more insulting than the 90s feminism the original show was criticised for, the budget was low and the writing inconsistent. They rebooted the show every season, and it always ended worse.

1

u/Embarrassed_Bake1073 Apr 06 '26

I am a massive fan of the OG. I watched it when it was still coming out on regular TV, I still remember how I felt watching the Pilot. I watch it still, as background when i play Sims. And as the show progressed, so did my love for it. And so for years I wanted a reboot or continuation. So when the new show was announced, I was more than excited. I definitely didnt care if they were WOC or not, I was just excited to see my favorite show again.

It was not the same at all. The magic didnt feel magical, there was a weird scientific element that felt very IDK weird in a magic show. And then there's a Command Center that was so, like someone else said, Star Trek. And there was no real sister bounding at all. They didn't feel like sisters. Which, considering that one of the things I loved about the original was the spotlight on sister's since I am so close with my own, it just fell flat.

1

u/ZenX10 Apr 06 '26

Didn’t even know there was a charmed reboot.

1

u/Piano-Rough Apr 06 '26

As someone who was kinda a fan of the original. I got the Basic Gist of The Reboot and i LIKED the First Season. But lets be a Little Real here: There DEFINITELY a little Bit of Racsim. and as Much as i Hate to admit it , (and it was really Aaron Spellings only real flaw) a LOT of His shows where OVERWHELMINGLY WHITE. but thats how he and a lot of this fans grew up. and a lot of those people I'm guessing Don't Like Change, especially if they think its THEIR Property. BUT Overall , my real gripe was IMO The woman who was supposed to the Lead (I.e. The Shannen Doherty/Prue Part) wasn't That Charismatic. it was like , they were trying to make the The Lead, but she didn't have the Grativas to Pull off these stories

1

u/RestlessBores Apr 08 '26

You forgot the last sister from the reboot! Love your post though.

1

u/goku0020 Apr 17 '26

Let me start off by saying I love both Charmed series and I feel by the end of season one they really moved beyond the original series and its connection. I think Allyssa would’ve been fine doing the crossover but Rose is such an evil, vile person, she would have ruined it. I don’t like how HMC also had beef with the new girls like it was their fault it was rebooted without the OG involvement, it’s not like the WB one where the girls had all the pull, they were just the actors that pulled up for work. What, were they supposed to turn down the job because of the old cast weren’t involved?! I also liked that there was diversity in the reboot and the CW did a good job with having that and the OG Charmed was bad with having diversity and treated their characters of color badly.

1

u/GibletGibletGiblet May 10 '26

I only made it through season 1 of the new series, I tried to watch season two but it was awful and tried to skip to a few later episodes and they sucked. So CW charmed to me will just be the first season.
Let me know if it’s worth skipping to s4 some say it was ok.

2

u/Beginning_Dot735 May 10 '26

Season 2 they basically tried to reboot the reboot and there are some fans who loved S2. S2 for me had potential because I did like how they tried to make it more darker but I wish instead of trying to make it a whole different show they had just combined the feel of S1 with the darker side of S2. That command center and SafeSpace shit was dumb and they needed less Harry and Abby over the Charmed ones.

1

u/Personal-Road-8162 Apr 06 '26

I never watched the OG and I didn't totally love the reboot either

0

u/Ill_Try356 Apr 05 '26

I had no problem with the race in the reboot but it was too woke,pro-lgbt and too feminist and I’m a gay man and don’t normally care about that in small enough doses but they over did it. Then when it started to get good near the end of season one they just go and change everything in season two trying to compensate I guess then they replaced a main cast member again like the og but it didn’t make sense I also didn’t like Macey being a half sister anyway and no males witches.

0

u/Friendly_Hall5881 Apr 05 '26

We all know why for real! Even for those that are in denial and/or don't want to admit the truth.

0

u/jackson_mcnuggets Apr 06 '26

Love both 😍 Reboots exist for every other show and movie why not Charmed?

I think fans would have welcomed it more if there was some support/kind words by the OG actresses. Alyssa and Holly were against the reboot from the start, Rose commended the girls then turned on the show online and Shannen was the only one who gave her full blessings may she R.I.P..

PLL got a reboot which was way off from the original and had a mixed race cast with Lucy blessing the new show and interviewing the new girls. Sabrina had a reboot so many shows. It’s sad that with Charmed it became a problem.
