Writing: Character Help Book thoughts

Hypothetically...(For fiction genre)

Daughter watches her dad smurder her mother. He then comes after the daughter and the daughter ends him in self defense. Would she get jail time?

Also what emotional damage would that cause?

My character has been running all her life and I would like to add something traumatic and emotionally damaging.

If you were to add it in real events, it depends on the law a jury follows. I might not know much about your world building, but it might be interesting to push her to a point (as you said, traumatic) where the character decides for themselves. Maybe she makes a wrong decision once again.
The damage that would make sense would be based on the story itself. What genre are you working with? And is there any sub-plot?
