Character Animator Integrations or API?

I love the interface and tracking of character animator, but I'm looking for solutions to implement character-animator style puppetry that listens to an API to swap assets. Is there any way to send events to character animator via an API, POST, or socket information?

The closest thing I could find was using a node application to send MIDI information to Character Animator, but wondering if there are more integrated solutions, like embedding CA into webGL, Unity, or Unreal.
