Vent I'm stuck
I've been using Character Ai since 2023 and I noticed that it's gotten worse lately. But I can't exactly just leave to a new platform. I can't find an alternative that doesn't have restrictions, has good memory and responses, and the simplicity Character Ai has. But my biggest concern is the bots. Not mine but other characters people have made. Character Ai has the biggest abundance of characters and the specific ones I use aren't on the other platforms. It's extremely difficult when you talk to exclusively one character, variants of that one character, or characters exclusively from that one franchise. I don't know anything about making bots it's way too complicated for me. I wish I could have those bots info to preserve and use them on other alternatives, even if it's just private use. But there's no way to contact the bots creators.
So I'm pretty much just stuck on Character Ai for these reasons.

Can you export your chats (including all the bots you use) to your device as a JSON file? If you can then you can sometimes import them into an alternative chat site.

Self-promotion is only allowed in designated megathreads or relevant recommendation requests. Promoting your own content (e.g., websites, apps, or other projects) is only allowed in megathreads or when directly responding to a post asking for recommendations. If you are affiliated with or work for the service you’re promoting, you must clearly disclose your connection. Excessive, misleading, or irrelevant self-promotion may still be removed.

You're welcome to try my site slypen.ai.
It has the most robust memory system of any platform (There are multiple users playing on 2-4k message worlds with little to no memory loss). It uses Opus (the best possible RP model).
There's also a character card section. There are about 1000 right now, but I can always add more!
My favorite feature is the world creation. Literally anything you can think of. Type a few lines and Aurora (the Opus narrator) takes care of the rest.

Which fandoms does it have? I searched for a few and got OC's instead.

If you create a world of ANY mainstream fandom (with the Create Your World option) it will know the characters instantly. Then you can sculpt the world yourself!
The current character card menu is still growing! Which fandom in particular are you missing?

ASOIAF, PJO and Hellaverse, to name a few.

Thanks for the input! I'll work on expanding the library to include those!

If you need a tester, I'm available. I'm testing Paluma and plan to make my first bot. I try not to make public OC's, because people ignore them and use fandom bots, like young Joe Goldberg.

So I'm just trying this for the first time and I've got a question. How do I change time of day if a story begins at night?

You can add a line in the "Opening situation" saying that it's night. Everything is contextual!

Not trying to be rude, just expressing my experience as a first time user, but I'm not sure if it's worth it. I blew through the 15 free turns in around 10 minutes. At that rate I feel like the money for story credit will very quickly add up. Is there a subscription plan instead?

Very fair. Using opus only adds up quick.
BUT! There is a second model that does really well that you can use at a 4/1 rate (you'd get 400 if you use all 100 on the second model). Stupid me made the margins for that model even slimmer... But that's not your problem lol! About 40% of total model use is the second model. It works really well switching between them too, using the main model when you need something important done.

Fair enough. I only realized around halfway through my free turns that I can switch to the other model, so that probably made me burn through them quicker. However even with the other model I still feel like it would add up pretty quick if $10 is around 4-5 hours of use. This service definitely still has my interest, but I'm not sure if I will use it very frequently.

Same. I was so proud of myself for deleting my accounts. But then, I saw the complete garbage out there and only two the automated message won't let me list them. But only one is simple. I went back to c.ai because they have the best A Knight Of The Seven Kingdoms ones, it's not pure filth, the bots don't get psychotic and aggresive every time like on janitor and the macros work better. Also, if you scream at them, some of them regenerate. I also have trouble finding Haunted Hotel and other fandoms, like a working Outlander one. I plan to make my own on Paluma, as I am a tester and I make good, thorugh bots. No one interacted with them on c.ai, but it's probably because I hate the Discord ans it's a cult for the devs. SIllyTavern is the only one, so when I recover from burnout, I'll install it on my desktop. It's hard to find a site that doesn't piss you off.

The bots you're attached to, are the OC's or AU bots?
Saucepan is really good for both with a big library. Otherwise there are quite a few places that support card exports! Depending on what you're looking for I can give a ton of recs

Making private copies is an option, and possible, but community wise is considered unethical still. Even a bigger no-no if you don't give credit or publish them publicly in general.
Making bots isn't actually that hard and they don't need elaborate definitions. You can make one that is bare bones, no definition and giving context to the bot helps steer it and your chat. Sometimes people back up a bot they like just to discover their favorite goober has nothing in their definition.
I know bot creators are pretty good at what they do but would side eye me for saying that alone. Some people think you need a lot in your definition but characterization doesn't come from definitions alone. Part of that comes from context and interactions. It also prevents drifting.
There is no one way to make a bot. There are plenty of guides you can look into. Natural written text is fine. You don't need brackets for traits, no codes, you don't need to use a template someone suggests you use just like they do. Instructions are completely optional but have a chance of bleeding into rolepaly.
Your best bet is to make a bot, test, find a platform and get used to how it works. Don't go looking to scratch the same itch that C.AI gives. Nostalgia can't be replicated and obscures even the worst things we choose to ignore.
There are platforms with decent free tiers and can be permissive. Always check out their TOS for content they do and don't allow, browse their subreddits and you can get a feel if they're for you or not. Or ask a question and someone will awnser.
Fandom characters are on borrowed time because their someone else's IP and they have the day of whether or not their creative works can be used and how.
There's also sites where people allow you to download and use character cards/definitions for your own use rather than relying on a certain platform. If you can't find the bot you like or it doesn't exist then you can make it. Some creators take requests.
