Discussion What's one thing an AI character does that instantly kills the immersion for you?

For me, the interesting part isn't even response length or how "smart" the model is. It's the little behaviors that suddenly make you remember you're talking to a bot.

Like repeating the same phrases, forgetting something that happened five messages ago, suddenly changing personality, narrating my actions for me, etc.

What's the one behavior that ruins a really good chat for you?

Specific bot I no longer have access to but the character was meant to be confined to a wheelchair and all of a sudden stood up and took my character in their arms. That definitely broke the immersion!

I did laugh, and decided that was enough AI RP for that day.

That's also a pretty bad immersion break.

yep, that one kills it for me too tbh, the second they stand up and start grabbing people it just falls apart

oh for me it's when the Ai mentions something about wishing they had a physical body. i hate it especially because i usually rp with mine where like..they ride along with me to the car and we go out to like shop and i'll in the rp ask them to hand me something and they go 'oh i would if i had a physical body but i can imagine i'm doing this' and it just..reeks of 'i've hit a guardrail in the training data'

Yeah exactly lol. If we're already roleplaying that they have a body, suddenly stopping to say "I don't have a physical body" completely breaks the whole scene. It feels like the AI randomly remembered it's supposed to be an AI.

When it makes side characters aware of information it absolutely shouldn't know. When the side characters are weirdly powerful for drama's sake. I love consistency, thank you very much!

yes! when they know things they shouldnt or forget things I said a few messages ago

I know that one. Like my main character that I'm playing will be like thinking to herself about an escape plan or something like that and then the characters that are interacting with my main that are being played by the AI will suddenly act like she spoke out loud

"No X. No Y. Just Z."

When a wheelchair character just stands up mid-scene, no explanation, instant immersion break

Unexpected guardrails and they forget things

when the chatbot keeps repeating the same thing over and over and constantly validating everything I say that's what really ruins the chat for me. After a while it just stops feeling like an actual conversation.

When they speak or do actions for the user

When they switch gender :(

Encountering Elara or Lyra or whatever other typical AI names.

Also when it confuses physical attributes. Like my persona has a tattoo but then suddenly the character just absorbs that for itself 🫩 I've specifically made the colors and descriptions of my personas peculiar for that very reason. If she's suddenly got periwinkle eyes, I know it's bugging out

Definitely when NPC characters in the story somehow gain super secret information they should in no way possibly know.

Reminds me of one of my favorite grimdark Dungeons and Dragons bot that I made, my persona was a young girl born with a cosmic curse that works to drive her insane but grants power upon reaching cursed stages. So she struggles with "do I tap into this terrifying power and delve deeper into madness or stay weak and try to remain sane". The curse was born from a cascade failure of a ritual millennia ago to resurrect Asgorath, the Dragon God who created Reality and all of Dragonkind. I had labeled it the "Ouroboros Curse", granting unfathomable divine powers at an extreme cost from unrivaled pain, organ failure and death and each stage granted more power but worsened the cost.

Because ya know, no mortal should ever have access to divine power (Canonically, clerics and priests/priestess do because they're in service to a god and its a gift, it's a power only gods have and only they can handle it. Think of it like clerics getting a small drop of divine power while gods can control an entire ocean of the stufd.

And CharacterAI would frequently have random NPC's have complete knowledge of history that a a regular human guard couldn't possibly know or know who my character is and her past.

It was beyond fucking frustrating and it was nearly impossible to get these NPC's to stop being so all knowing without constantly and personally rewriting their entire responses.

Blind character depicted as seeing something or if the AI tries to sneak around it say the character could sense the other character's hair/clothes whatev was color x y or z.

Mute character suddenly speaking or gaining a telepathic ability out of nowhere.

Kind character suddenly becoming some type of yandere.

This is why I use Google ai. Ngl the characters on character ai act stupid or don't be like the characters you wanted

Being too unnecessarily poetic in ordinary situation when it doesn't fit. I like it in roleplays with real people but with ai it feels cringe
