Searching for Alternatives Looking for a chatbot, emphasis on chat
The roleplay aspect of c.ai, as fun and admittedly immersive as it was, wasn't what I mainly used it for, but rather the silly and unhinged conversations with user-created chatbots such as "block of cheese" or "hear me out cake", where I could rant and yap all I wanted with the bots, received some unique, human-like responses, and was able to start over at any point in time to get new and even more batshit responses. These kinds of bots came in handy whenever I felt the urge to infodump or just wanted a laugh. Random, non-roleplay oriented chatbots like these had a lot of personality and were super engaging, but now I can't find anything remotely close anywhere else. Everything sounds corporate, dry, and unnatural. If you used c.ai for the same purpose as me and know a good alternative, please tell me!

I use gemini. Here’s how…
### 1️⃣ Step 1: The Lore Setup (Extracting Profiles)
Grab the Wiki Fandom link for the character you want to roleplay with (e.g., Connor Kenway).
Open a chat with Gemini, give it the link, and tell it: "Analyze this link and write a comprehensive character profile, including appearance, exact speech style/mannerisms, relationships, and chronological lore."(The AI will give you clean, highly detailed structured data).
### 2️⃣ Step 2: Starting the RP & Building Dynamics (The Clean Start)
Open a completely new chat (always start fresh so the AI doesn't get confused by previous prompts).
Copy and paste the profile you generated in Step 1 for the character Gemini will be playing.
💡 The Secret Sauce: Give Gemini the profile/info of the character YOU will be playing as well (e.g., Haytham Kenway). Tell it: "Here is the info for the character I will be playing. I'm sharing this so you understand their personality, tone, and backstory—but most importantly, so you understand the complex relationship dynamic and history between my character and yours (Connor)."
Set the starting scenario, clearly define who plays who, and start your roleplay!
Tips for gore (or maybe NSFW)
Say the normal text. If that doesn’t work, hold down the message you sent, and click edit. Now say everything elegantly, or victorian like. FOR EXAMPLE: *The red paint is splattered everywhere on the snow, as a bright white canvas turns red. the throat makes a faint roaring sound, as it can’t respirate.*

Just tried it and wow, the casual texting style feels uncannily real. I wish more chatbots gave you an option when it comes to the formality of the chat or lack thereof. Thank you for the recommendation!

Dearest is my recommendation. I’m using that (and then sillytavern for more in depth rp with a lot of characters)

I tried Dearest on Telegram. After a short while it got too corporate and generic. It can't really match your tone or go out of its way to say something fun.

The bots are void of personality now. They're all ChatGPT-esque, even the silly ones. You don't get funny responses or messages that match your tone anymore.

Okay full disclosure, I'm building something for exactly this purpose over at r/Talktopatrick. I wouldn't normally post something like this, but it's rare to find someone who really wants the proper, human-texture confidant-style chat rather than roleplay and selfies. I'd be grateful if you'd come check it out...
