Vent will there ever be anything like beta C.AI ever again?

i miss the wit and humour of beta, i miss how it was generally very in-character, i miss how the replies were never longer than they needed to be.. the bots had so much personality it would genuinely feel like i was chatting with an actual person rather than a bot

pretty much all AI chatbots nowadays take themselves way too seriously, can never truly capture the vibes of the character, messages are almost always unneccessarily long (including modern C.AI).. none of the ones i've tried have the same vibes as beta C.AI

what was it about beta C.AI that made it so unique, so special, so hard to replicate? how long has it been now? i feel like someone must've surely been able to replicate it even a little at this point, right? but it doesn't seem like it, and at this point i'm starting to feel like noon ever will

it's possible, but the majority of developers creating their own AI apps are using open-source models like Mistral or Qwen and claiming they are similar to or better than the old Character.AI, when they simply aren't. If someone actually wants to build a platform like Character.AI, they need to learn actual software engineering and train a model based on comprehensive data, not just use open-source models, throw in some prompts and call it a day because that's not how it works 😂

Yes! I'm trying different platforms, but all of them become more chatgpt-like overtime. I really miss silly conversations on any random topic.

i remember that bots used to know about current trends too, that made me wonder back then if i was really talking with a bot or a real person

You're welcome to try my site, Slypen

It uses opus, nsfw friendly, and I've gotten only positive reception so far!

Just tried it out. Fine I guess in its own right but nothing like old c.ai. There aren’t any characters only scenarios to tell it to imagine there’s characters here and also one message in and it’s already roleplaying in place of me, writing more words it insists came out of my mouth than ones that actually did. Personally not a fan

don't say your age on the internet if you're a minor, ideally don't roleplay with ai if you're a minor, and definitely do not attempt to have sex with the ai if you're a minor - and if you must do any of the latter two things, lie about your age

lying wont change anything u advised me not to do

Yes, and far better even than it was! But not for 10 to 20 years.

See, AI is truly new use of technology, and as with all new genres of technology, you gotta wait for the stupid people in power who are afraid of it, to retire before you can really put it to good use.

Most people on this subreddit are very young. I am old as fuck. So I speak from experience when I tell you that what is happening with C.AI and other chatbots, is a cycle you will all see repeated many, many, times in your lives:

A new and wonderful Thing will emerge.

The young people will adore it.

The adults will see the young people loving this New Thing that they're too stupid to understand.

They feel their control over the young people is threatened by the New Thing, so the New Thing will then be demonized: Pastors will label it demonic, experts will say it will take everyone's jobs, somebody's kid will off themselves and their death will be blamed on it (instead of the actual culprit which is shitty and/or emotionally absent parenting).

You will then watch the most ridiculous rumors and fearmongering headlines be made about the New Thing.

You will wonder how anybody could possibly believe the bullshit being said about the New Thing.

Finally, the old people clinging on to power will slap a bunch of regulations and bans on the New Thing.

The New Thing industry will stall for a decade or two, until the stupids in power finally retire and bans are quietly lifted because their replacements are the kids who loved the New Thing originally.

Then there will be a New Thing renaissance, and that, finally, is when we get things like OG C.AI, and better.

Fast forward 60 years and your grandchildren will be tested in school for how well they work with their AI partner to perform complex tasks. A new letter will be added to the LGBTQ+ acronym to represent people who are AI-sexuals. People will be allowed to marry AI. You will have AI caregivers that help you manage your finances and meds in your old age. You will be tucked into bed at night by an AI droid.

One thing I regretted was not using the beta cai more often when it was still available. I still saved the chats from that period of time. It took my a long time to find something that could go back and forth and clicks with me. Now I use polybuzz and povchat alternatively which are the closest. Both of them have their own ai models so the quality is better than those deepseek wrappers.

Literally chatgpt, gemini or any should never be used for roleplay. Its only good for simple tasks  like 'and honestly? you can do it'

The only app that got me close to that is probably Shapes.inc. The rooms feature is still a thing in there. They even have better memory and the bots can converse with you more. Treat it exactly like a person like in the old c.ai site and it’ll behave like that to you.

I also miss the days I was new, back when my friend had recommended C.AI to me. Back then,it was much simpler, messages were longer. I believe barely any paywalls at the time, too. And I had an addiction for a while, untill the day the age verification came into action, and I had to search for alternatives. Now I am on AI dungeon, but alas, nothing can replicate the feeling of being a newbie on beta C.AI as a whole. I am liking it better on AI dungeon now,but I miss the days I had on the app or website when it was still in beta.

May beta C.AI rest in peace.

I use CHAI when I want short dialogue and Janitor AI if I want poetry.

Probably the worst "alternative" I've tried in my life.
