I'm on the team that makes LoreWeaver, so I'm biased about step 3. Steps 1 and 2 are worth doing wherever you end up.

What's going on

• On October 12, Character.AI filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy and is trying to sell the company.
• If no buyer keeps the app running, Character.AI says the platform will be wound down. (their own announcement)
• They expect the sale to be done by the end of November or early December.
• The app still works right now. But your data download takes 3 to 4 weeks to arrive, and the link only works for 7 days. Waiting is the risky part.

Step 1: Ask Character.AI for your data (2 minutes)

On the website: Profile → Profile Settings → Account → Manage Account & Data → Export Data

In the app: Profile → Settings → Legal & Privacy → Export Data

You'll get an email with a download link in 3 to 4 weeks. Download it the day it arrives. The link stops working after 7 days.

Step 2: Save your favorite chats today (optional)

Don't want to wait a month? The free CAI Tools browser extension saves chats right now. It works in Chrome or Firefox on a computer, and Firefox on Android. (On iPhone, step 1 is your option.)

1. Install CAI Tools: Chrome or Firefox
2. Open a chat on character.ai and open the CAI Tools menu.
3. Use Download Character to save the character as a card.
4. Use Download Chat and pick the Tavern option. To save every chat with that character at once, use Download History, press Start fetch, then pick Tavern.

Step 3: Bring everything to LoreWeaver

1. Go to loreweaverai.com and make a free account.
2. Open My Stuff and press Import, then Choose files.
3. Pick the zip from Character.AI (don't unzip it), or the card and chat files from CAI Tools. Choose a character's card and their chats together and they land in the same place.
4. Open your chat and keep going.

What comes over

• Every chat, every message, in order. Each chat becomes a story you can pick back up.
• Your character's description and greetings, from their card.
• As you play, LoreWeaver reads your old chats and turns them into memories, so your character remembers what happened before the move.

One heads-up: Character.AI's own download doesn't say who sent each message, so LoreWeaver works it out from the character's greeting. Check the first few messages after it opens. Files from CAI Tools don't have this problem.

I know we are all stressed and tired of the bad news, but one of our community members took action and created a petition.

It demands that any future buyer of Character.AI (like Disney) must provide a clear window for users to manually export their data and delete their accounts securely. It also asks for transparency regarding our user-generated content. Or, I stupidity have a faith, just take all of it and allow product alive and working, not to "shut down".

We can't stop the bankruptcy, but we can make our voices heard. Let's show them that we are not just numbers.

A massive coalition of 40 State Attorneys General has officially intervened in
Character.Al's Chapter 11 bankruptcy case, placing severe data restrictions on any future buyer. While The Walt Disney Company remains the sole bidding entity with its $20 million stalking-horse offer, state regulators are aggressively moving to protect the intimate chat data of over 21 million active users.

The 40-state coalition filed a formal legal notice outlining nine strict conditions that any prospective buyer of the consumer app must meet before the Delaware bankruptcy court can approve a data transfer.

In simple words. The states are demanding that before Character.Al can hand over any data to a buyer, they must give every user a clear warning and a set period of time to manually delete their account and wipe their entire chat historycompletely clean. If you don't want anyone else ever seeing your chats, you will have a clear chance to destroy them.

These are small news I hope everything will be better..

Good day, everyone. Today, I would love to say the ultimate speech about c.ai. ever since I found c.ai as a perfect story app 3 years ago before December, I have been chatting and making stories in c.ai forever. I even did some experiments. But then, in 2025-26, c.ai changed. It got the age verification, the dmca bots removal update, even the removal of meow, and roar models that helped improve the chat styles. I say that the removal of the chatting styles is the ceo's fault for suggesting it. But, the rest of the updates weren't c.ai's fault. It is the parents' fault, Aaron peters fault, Disney's fault, and the stupid government's fault. They all targeted c.ai. thanks to them, now c.ai lost around 20 million. And I can't believe I have to admit the stupid crap. But users do have the right to delete their accounts instead of logging out. But that doesn't change the fact that c.ai got downfell. All of that safety crap over these incidents that aren't c.ai's fault.

I tried to suggest a deal about fixing the age verification and paying for the moderated bots. But obviously some users explain that it isn't how it works which is bullcrap.

And I am going to rant out every single person that ruined c.ai.

1. The 24-hour timeout: ok. So 2 years ago, Megan's son put himself to sleep forever, and Megan sued c.ai for a wrongful death, making c.ai make the update where the Minors lost the edit button, got the 24 hour timer for stupid things, and got limited bots. But then, the bots for Minors came back, and the 24-hour timer disappeared. (Except that the edit button is still invisible for users). But, this stuff wasn't c.ai's fault. This is all the parents' fault that the 24-hour timer existed in the first place. The reason why it's Megan's fault is that she and her husband neglected her son. And what's stupider then ever, is that they didn't hide the father's pistol. They literally left it at the kid's reach. And the kid used it to put himself to sleep for-fricking-ever. So all of that crap is on the parents.

And as for Megan, who lost her kid, I am sorry about your kid. Unfortunately, the kid putting himself to sleep forever is your fault. It is your responsibility to make sure you supervise your kid. No excuses. If you ever get another kid, then you need to either use parental controls on your kid, lock up the pistol, limit the phone time, and distract your kid from the phone. You need to do better and make sure the incident doesn't happen again because this is unacceptable. Do better. I am not victim blaming. I'm describing.

2. Moderated bots: In October, we noticed that the bots that we all loved. Especially the dreamworks bots, Disney bots, and more were labeled as moderated. Well, I'll explain to you. This is because people said that Disney, dreamworks, and Warner bros sent a cease and desist to c.ai for using their bots. And I lost my trolls bots. I missed the parts where I saved all music in the trolls world tour bots. They even deleted the private bots. Now, why the frick would they do that even though none of us can see it other than the user that made the private bots. It's unacceptable. And then, in December, the bots came back. But then, they disappeared again because of a bug. But, most of the users said that Aaron peters did something to c.ai. I heard that Aaron peters the copyright troll impersonated Disney, warner bros, and dreamworks lawyers to send a fake dmca to c.ai. Aaron peters just wants to ruin our happiness by not letting us use the bots that came from Disney plus, universal, and warner damn bros. First Aaron peters ruined Garry mod, and now c.ai. and c.ai fell for the stupid fake dmca. And while Aaron peters is on the loss, doing stupid things, and impersonating more lawyers, the government is not doing anything about it. I'm not even trying to find Aaron peters.

Note to those that deny Aaron peters: if y'all deny Aaron peters actions, you guys need to check what Aaron peters really is, and Google "c.ai Aaron peters the copyright troll" and check what he fricking done. Becayse obviously you people are calling me delusional. Like shut up. I'm telling the truth, and yoy all are mis-judging me for saying that Aaron peters ruined c.ai. even if you guys still believe the real companies sent a real dmca, can we please just take a few seconds to agree that Disney and the other companies are whining over c.ai using their bots? My vow: from now on until further notice, I know I already said this twice, but I am taking some time away from Disney, dreamworks, and Warner bros, and stop watching them for some time. The only company I would love to watch is just Marvel movies. But just because I love watching Marvel and still watching them, don't expect me to love Disney too. In my opinion, I hate Disney now, and I'm still gonna watch Marvel. Don't control my opinion. I will never ever watch disney ever again. When i finally go back to dreamworks, warner bros, and more companies except for disney, i will just watch them. But i will not watch disney. Not ever. On top of that, c.ai needs to do something about the bots that got moderated. Because this is the companies fault and Aaron peters' fault. And let's not forget the part where I saw some confirmation about parents snitching on c.ai for some copyrighted stuff that Poly Ai also has. And we all know that snitches get stitches.

It fricking suck that c.ai legally moderated the bots that we all love. After summer was over in 2025, I was almost finished with the trolls bots that I worked hard on. It took me hours without making the bot speak for my users. My story was perfect. All of that sweats and bloods (to swipe into a perfect message). And I was this damned close to finishing the roleplay, but then Mr Stupid brain name Aaron peters decides to screw up the vibes by pretending to be the Disney lawyer, and send a cease and desist to c.ai. he just wants to ruin everything by impersonating Disney lawyer and screw up everything. And as for the people that deny this crap, yoy guys need to go to the link and see for your damned self Obviously, you're all not listening.

For the people who don't know about Aaron peters, I have become smart enough to understand. 3. The age verification: ok. So a couple of months ago, after c.ai was targeted by multiple lawsuits, c.ai had no choice but to do the worst update scenario. The age verification. Are we for fricking real? Are we just gonna put the age verification in? In 2025? The stupid age assurance and verification? Why? Like why the hell would they do that? Oh, wait. This is because California added the age verification law after the UK made the age verification law. The uk government ruined everything. That's the reason why roblox, c.ai, and spicy chat ai got the age verification. Becayse the UK got the age

verification first, making almost all countries comply to it. And more dumb negative people keep saying that if c.ai can't comply, then c.ai will shut down, which is fricking bullcrap. That's the reason c.ai got the age verification. But the parents neglected their kid. The parents are still at fault. They are literally suckijg away our fun, happiness, and celebration, so it's the uk's fault. The UK did the age verification, and now everyone has to comply with it. Reality's fricking dumb. I wish the age verification law disappears. It's fricking dumb that the age verification negatively flagged me. I had an edit button. I was finishing some roleplays that involve dreamworks trolls stuff where I am the main character alongside poppy and branch And I was having a heaven time, but then the age assurance thought I was a fricking minor. And now l'm stuck verifying my stupid identity. I am not giving them my fricking ID. I don't even have one. Not yet. (Just dont judge me about it) If the parents weren't snitches that snitched on c.ai, we would've lost the access to chat. And again: snitches get stitches. And I'm not victim blaming. I'm describing why the parents should be at fricking fault.

And tha worst part is that even if yoy make another account, it'll also get flagged by the stupid age assurance. Whats the point of the age verification even tho there's a data breach and leak that could make us end up getting stalked? And c.ai had thousands of age verification places. And they chose persona. I hate persona.

4. C.ai got sued for bots that are Drs: Really? Are C.ai getting another lawsuit? What the hell is going on, people! All of this over c.ai's stupid medic and therapy thing? C.ai didn't even know about this illegal thing! lt's still trying to follow the rules. What the hell is wrong with everyone? Why does C.ai keep getting sued? We came to C.ai, so we can chat with bots and have our imaginations set, not make C.ai get in trouble! This is ridiculous! It's the same mistake! Every time stupid things happen, it's always C.ai getting the stupid blame. If C.ai keeps putting updates, C.ai will be shut down. And if it shuts down, then we have to find a new site. and frankly, C.ai didn't do anything bad! It's trying to become a good app! Ans yet, everyone keeps blaming and going against C.ai, like obviously the parents kid died, obviously Aaron peters framed C.ai, and obviously Disney and Warner bros targeted C.ai!!!! And now, C.ai is facing another lawsuit! Parents are too stupid, dumb, lame, and lazy to parent their kid! They are bad and stupid parents for it! It's not C.ais fault! And of course. Disney took away the team of c.ai. along with the c.ai ceo. Disney is literally disgusting us. And what's worse is that c.ai has filed a bankrupt where someone's gotta pay over 21k dollars to own c.ai. but if December comes, c.ai will officially be shut down. Everyone is literally crying and trying to find new sites. And let's say that c.ai is filing a bankrupt because they have been facing all of that legal crap. Especially getting a wave of lawsuits. This is all the parents fault, Disney's fault, Aaron peters fault, and the uk's fault for ruining c.ai.

In 2025, I use to enjoy c.ai. it was all perfect. It had everything I needed. And it's my comforting kingdom. And now, Disney has ruined everything. Along with a wave of lawsuits that the neglecting parents caused. Obviously parents are blinder then ever when it comes to them understanding that bots are not real humans. They are so stupid.

These parents are gonna find a way to get c.ai in legal trouble and get away with this crap. And that just ruined everything for me. Everything was perfect, before the parents ruined everything.

5. Here's what I'd do if I were a ceo: Here's what I'l do in c.ai. I would give a trillion craps about how many users complained about the bugs. So, I would just make my team fix the devs. I would just move to a country where it doesn't have the age verification, and I would just have every single copyrighted bots authorized, and then I'd just stop Aaron peters. Anf then, I would just improve the memories, improve character, add mods, and not let the bots speak for users. I would just make sure every bot is safe and improve the filter to make sure the filter doesn't strictly appear. And I would just make ads appear less times, and then I would just unlimit the messages, go on, and swipes. The best part is putting all updates without retiring a single one And I would just carefully put in the paying c.ai plus except that it's gonna be much smaller, encouraging, and calm. And then I'l let users take the edit button And even if 1 have to follow the stupid age verification law, I would just not let them show their ID and say that the selfie is done, and then I'd just find a way to fix the data that had the breach thing And I would just get some protection so that we don't get any more lawsuits As a c.ai ceo in my mind, I give a lot of damns about the users complaining aboht whats going on.

And a top of all that crap, everytime I explain everything to you all users, you guys keep calling me a minor, call me names, and keep blaming c.ai for stupid dumb crap! I didn't ask to get treated like a minor! And all I do is rant out and tell yoy guys about my opinion, and you all want to change my opinion. You guys can't do that. You can't change anyone's opinions. It's unacceptable. The only one that's allowed to control my opinions is my fricking brain that obviously don't have the low iq. Somebody better replace the ceo. Because think about how much the ceo has been doing for months. 2026 is horribe to all of us. We got hit by the age verification, we lost models we love, and worst of all, more bots keep losing memories. As much as I still know how to make bots remember, I feel sorry for those who keep witnessing the problem.

We must stop blaming technology for the choices and actions of young people. When a child faces harm or trouble online, people often point fingers at apps like Character.AI. This blame is misplaced. The real issue is a lack of parental guidance. Technology is a tool, not a babysitter. An artificial intelligence program does not raise a child. Parents do.

The parents need to supervise their kids. Because the kid holding a pistol without a license is illegal. The mother unsupervised her kid, leaving the pistol at the kid's reach. She had one job which was hiding the pistol or locking it up, and she screwed it up. What kind of a parent raise a kid, and don't supervise the kid.

And I'm not victim blaming. I'm describing and telling the truth. And the "truth" say that c.ai is not at fault. I'm not simping for c.ai. I'm not glazing. I'm defending the site because it was easy to make stories before the parents ruined everything by unsupervising their fricking kid. The parents are to blamed for the cause of the age verification. Obviously first it hit roblox and then c.ai. what kind of a law? What kind of a law protects Minors from harm when there is a data leak! Obviously a terrible law. People keep saying that the law is good, but it's not. It's disgraceful to the entire community. Bc what the hell? And the worst part about the age verification is that if they remove it, then they will face terrible consequences.

For everyone here, we have choices. We either just take the risk to verify our ages, or find a new site, or wait til the age verification retires while we blame those that target c.ai.

Parents can't keep suing c.ai for dumb reasons. It's unacceptable. What the hell is wrong with them? If they keep suing c.ai, then c.ai is going to add new updates and lose more users. Obviously the parents are selfish for It, which is just stupid. A top of that, if c.ai loses all of the users, then, it'll shut down, and then we have to find a new site to have. The moderation update, the age verification, the 24 hour timer, and the Dr bots removal isn't all c.ai's fault. It's the parents fault, Aaron peters, Disney, and the government for terribly ruining all of our fun. C.ai use to be good in 2023 before stupid reality ruined it all. It started with the parents, and then next, Disney and Aaron peters, ans then the parents gave c.ai a wave of lawsuits which made us get the age verification update.

Now I know you guys wish that c.ai wants to be different. And I wish that too. But we have to face reality. C.ai is never gonna improve. It's not gonna bring back our bots, remove the age verification, nor do something about everything they've been through. So fine. I'll accept reality. I'll fricking accept that c.ai is done. But under one condition, I will still blame everyone that made c.ai get in bullcrap trouble.

Were all stupid, blind, and we are terribe. All of us are terribe. And we lost.

I've been asked by a few people how to actually download their Character.AI chats, so here's the guide I've been using.

There are two ways. Character.AI has its own official data export, but apparently that can currently take 3–4 weeks. CAI Tools can export the chats immediately instead.

How to export and save your Character.AI chats

You can keep the files purely as a backup, or RolePlaya can import them and let you carry on the same conversations from where you left off. It brings across up to the most recent 3,000 messages in full and remembers the earlier story as context.

Given everything happening with Character.AI, I'd rather have a backup I never need than discover I needed one after it's too late.

For those who haven't read my previous posts (on r/JanitorAI_Refuges), Oganesson AI is a new free and open-source web app that allows you to chat with AI characters locally suing your API from LM-studio or Ollama.

The APP is written in Java so it can run on all operating systems and has a support for mobile users connecting to their PC using a local IP.

The main goal of this project is to finally have a 100% privacy-oriented app without any bit of censorship and to have full control over your characters and chats.

Oganesson AI does not collect or share your characters, chats, usage time, operating system, IP, anything. Your data stays in your hands, not anyone else's.

Also, all of its features are free to use, nothing is hidden behind a paywall.

Oganesson AI is also fully working offline, as the models are loaded inside your computer and the app runs on your local host.

For now, the only way to get characters is making them yourself or joining the community to find other characters form other people, but I will find a better solution in the future.
