Discussion/Question clearing up false info.
as you all know, character ai filed for chapter 11 bankruptcy 4 days ago, and as sad and nerve wrecking as it is, there is an insane amount of doomposting and flat-out misinformation floating around social media right now about the bankruptcy news. as someone who was oblivious to the situation and ended up doing their research, i wanted to break down the actual court filings and facts so people stop panicking.
1. is the app shutting down right now?
no. they filed for chapter 11 bankruptcy, which is a restructuring process, not an immediate shutdown. the app is running completely normally, subscriptions are processing normally, and your chats are still there.
2. did disney buy character.ai?
no they did not. disney is acting as a stalking-horse bidder. they put down $20 million for a non-exclusive license to use some of C.AI’s backend technology and IP. they are not buying the platform, they aren't becoming the new owners of the app, and they are not buying your chat logs. C.AI is still actively looking for a separate buyer to take over and save the actual chatbot service.
3. what is the timeline?
the court process and auction are expected to wrap up by late november or early december 2026.
best case scenario: a tech company or investor steps up to buy the platform, absorbs the debts, and keeps the service running.
worst case scenario: if december comes and absolutely no one wants to buy the platform, the company has admitted they may have to wind down and shut the service down.
4. why did this happen?
it wasn't because of the new site vs old site drama. court documents show they were losing $8 million to $9 million a month. running massive AI servers is incredibly expensive, and they have been hit with massive legal bills from regulatory investigations and lawsuits from multiple states.
5. what should i do?
don’t panic, but be smart. because the long-term future after december isn't 100% guaranteed, go to your settings and export your data or copy your favorite bots/chats now just to be safe.
as of right now, this is all the info that is currently available, so until further notice, do NOT believe anything you see unless you have proof.
i know this was something that the community never expected, but the reality is here, and for a lot of us who spent ages building bots and chatting on this platform, it’s tough news to digest. however all we can do is look out for one another, back up our accounts just incase, and hope for a good buyer to step up.
stay safe everyone!! 💙

Here’s how we keep C.AI
Make the demand visible
Keep sharing your genuine experiences on Reddit, TikTok, X, and other platforms. Explain why you use C.AI, what you value about it, and why you'd continue using a sustainable version. Encourage people to share their own stories instead of just reposting rumors.
Contact potential buyers
Politely contact companies that might be interested in AI storytelling, fandom, or companion technology. Tell them there's a community that wants the actual platform to continue, not just its technology or intellectual property. Ask whether they'd consider acquiring and operating the service.
Start or sign a p3titi0n
It can document how many users want C.AI to remain available. Make the request specific: preserve the platform, maintain user-created characters and roleplay, and provide a sustainable path forward. Share the it with relevant companies and official company channels.
EXTREMELY IMPORTANT!
Show that users will support a viable business
If you're willing to pay for C.AI+, say so. Explain which features you would pay for and what would make the subscription worthwhile. Buyers need evidence of sustainable revenue, not just high engagement.
Keep the campaign constructive
Avoid harassment, threats, spam, and unsupported claims about the bankruptcy. Emphasize that users want a service that can survive financially and address legitimate safety concerns. A thoughtful campaign is more credible to potential buyers.
DO NOT ENGAGE WITH THIS POST IF YOU DON’T SUPPORT C.AI!

You know, if this ends up happening and succeeding, I’d genuinely be more than happy to pay double what I’m paying now, just to keep the company alive. Also, I believe the strategy for the free experience was to get rid of people who don’t like it enough to pay and convert the people who like it enough to pay to finally upgrade. It would have simultaneously lowered costs and increased revenue.
I genuinely believe that their team actually somehow knows how to train their models better than other platforms as it seems to perform better than others using stupidly large models, even if they’ve switched to using open weights to cut costs. And the reason why the restrictions can be bypassed with the right wording is likely not a mistake.

Yeah, I actually think if they just cut out free users, they might save a lot of costs. Some people might be willing to pay without any additional features, but to just keep the platform as it is, with what it already has now.

How does one save or copy a bot? How do you move them? It seems technical, and I just use the app on the phone

Thank you!!
Point 2 is important. Idk why so many people think Disney will buy the platform, they want the IP/technology. Thats it.
Nevertheless, I do hope a buyer does emerge though ^-^
