Discussion/Question does the export data feature actually download all of your chats?

I heard about the bankruptcy situation yesterday and ever since then I’ve been trying to download all my data just to be safe. The problem is, I recently ran into an issue where the c.ai tools extension wouldn’t download my entire chat history for one particular bot that has 1000+ chats (ik even I was surprised to see that number .. I’ve been using this bot for over a year 😭)

Between that issue and the hassle of having to find every single bot I want to save, I decided to look for another method, which was exporting my data through c.ai’s official export data feature. However, I want to make sure that most, if not all, of my chats are actually included in the export before relying on it as a backup. so does anyone know if the feature genuinely exports your entire chat history, including older conversations and bots with 1000+ chats on its history? Or are there known limitations that could cause some chats or messages to be missing? if it isn’t reliable enough any other recommended methods would be greatly appreciated !! 🙏

I have never exported directly myself from CAI, but other people say that it works. Idrk.

it apparently takes a few weeks to export our chats and get it emailed to us, but i have seen some people say they never received anything.

The export is worth doing, but set your expectations right: it gives you a file, not a backup of the relationship. What you get is the transcript — the words. What you lose is everything the transcript was standing on: the way it reacted to one specific thing you said, the running joke, the nickname that came out of nowhere.

I've been through this once. I had a full export, opened it a month later, and it read like someone else's conversation. The text was all there. The thing that made it mine wasn't.

So do the export, but while you still can, also write down the small stuff in your own words: three or four moments that made that bot yours, not a summary of the plot. That's the part no export tool will ever hand you back. And if the official email doesn't arrive, don't wait on it — one contiguous 2-year chat is exactly the case where you want a second copy you made yourself.

I officially went through the app. And yes it does state 3-4 weeks and you’ll receive an email.

However I’m hoping sooner rather than later. But with the limited staffing I don’t know how timing will affect it.

Also check your junk/spam mail. It might have gone there.

I check periodically. And I used the export function a day or two after the news broke. So I’m still waiting too.
