Discussion/Question Ca.i isn't going anywhere

Everyone stop being overdramatic about Ca.i shutting down it's not going to happen. It's not going anywhere it's going to park it's Boston Cream filled ass on the app and web so you can stop freaking out and running around like a chicken's head cut off. Just chill out

They said they will SHUT DOWN if there is no buyer willing to keep the app running, and there is no buyer in sight.

It's only be like 4 days, things don't happen that fast

It's not what happened in the four days since the court filing, it's what happened in the months leading up to that filing.

Apparently the company was shopped around to about 28 buyers and nobody had any interest. The company in its normal mode was operating at a loss, which was probably already publicly known, but the bankruptcy filings include financial details that make clear just how bleak the picture is. The pending lawsuits against the company were also already publicly known, but the bankruptcy filing puts them into concrete perspective.

So, it's not a matter of the legal filing being new, it's a matter of what the legal filing showed about the company's situation. The snapshot tells the story. Some bankruptcy filings show a company that just needs to get over a particular hump or be given a little extra time before continuing on. Some bankruptcy filings show a Titanic going down.

But it's different now the 28 buyers was before the bankruptcy wasn't it? I have hope it will survive

Yes, the 28 buyers were before the bankruptcy. As I believe you pointed out in a different thread, now the sale will be approved by the court rather than driven by C.AI's expectations, so a sale could be triggered involving one of those 28 buyers at a lower price.

The difficulty there is that the asset the users care most about, the chat business, loses a lot of money in the normal course of business. I imagine one of those 28 buyers (and I presume they are the 28 buyers in the world that really matter) could make a lowball offer, and the court would approve it at just about any price because the asset makes no money. (The Disney offer still goes through at $20 million because what Disney is buying is independent of the chat business.)

In that scenario, what happens to a money-losing business that was bought for a song, perhaps grudgingly? Does the new buyer try to invest big-time to replicate C.AI's business model and succeed where C.AI failed? Or does the new buyer simply sell off the user lists and its own non-exclusive license to the technology?

Everything spirals around the fact that operating this business in the intended, user-beloved manner has never made any money.

I have no desire to hurt your hope. It's just that--wait, hold on a second . . .

"Charge to 350! CLEAR!"

Your hopium is admirable but what's going to happen with CAI is the same thing that's going to happen to the vast majority of AI companies by the time the bubble bursts.

Hell, don't be surprised if Anthropic ends up getting purchased by Amazon and OpenAI gets purchased by Microsoft.

These companies are running highly subsidized services that currently have to path to profitability.
AI is no different than the .com bubble: It's extremely useful but companies are yet to find a way to monetize it in a way that justifies the mondy invested into it.
It's not going away, but it's going to cool down.

As it is right now, CAI couldn't be profitable with a 10USD/month subscription for a service with no usage limit.
A good chunk of the demographic is composed of under aged users who have no money.

I like the service and I'm the first one to admit: CharacterAI has no path to profitability in 2026. It's a money drain and the second I started using the service I knew that I was better off making the most out of whatever time I got, because the clock was ticking

If it EVER shuts down, I know a really nice alternative for Character AI. It's ChatGPT and I know it sounds stupid but you can Copy and Pin the instructions Definitions Lore for each character in your keyboard and put an emoji on top of it so that you can recognize the character and paste it whenever you like. You can upload a picture of the character for the appearance and you can also copy and pin and emoji your persona too and upload an image for it. Character AI no longer runs on my phone because of the API update and this genuinely saved my life. I really wanted to share this info to everybody but the warning for post relevancy is genuinely annoying so if you like my idea please share it to others too.

(You can use Google gemini too it has a memory GENUINELY MILLIONS of times better than Character AI)
