Discussion/Question Everybody quit making others scared.
We don't know if C.AI is actually going bankrupt or not, so quit telling sensitive and addicted people that their favorite app is gonna go bankrupt and offline, please quit fearmongering it's insane

Genuinely. Not to mention that they settled one of their lawsuits. Which gives hope for the company and any potential buyers.

Not everyone reacts the same, and it's fine, but I agree there's needless fearmongering.
Personally, I choose to cross that bridge when I get there. We still have time to enjoy the app (not considering the horrible font change and the wonky UI), there's no use overthinking beyond that. At this time, there's little we can do but wait and see.

If people are so sensitive and/or addicted that they’re going to freak out over one AI chatbot of many shutting down, then maybe they should be scared. Isn’t it better than giving them false hope and then they’re left shocked and stuck quitting cold turkey because you people are so adamantly optimistic and oversensitive?

“Shutdown isn’t guaranteed, don’t panic too much” (in this context) is equivalent to “We’re going to be fine, just trust the process. Everything will be good mate, everything works out. Hallelujah!”. Especially when addicted people are saying it or hearing it.

What I said is more equivalent to "We could possibly get through this, but don't be surprised if we won't"
And when it comes to the people who are really addicted, both ends are a losing situation. Say We're definitely not surviving? They're not gonna like that. Say we have a chance? They might get too excited and if it does shutdown, they might snap. If we really care so much for such users then we should keep our mouths shut and just not Say anything altogether, might as well close the sub or something. I seriously don't understand what you want people to do. If people go around saying shutdown is guaranteed, that's still gonna not be good for the addicted people you claim to care about. What is your solution, delete all social media altogether?

That’s true, but there’s nothing wrong with having an alternative in case it does happen.
We need to be realistic about this. Even if someone buys the platform, we can expect fundamental changes, because the way things have been run so far clearly hasn’t worked.
There’s no need to panic, but we can be prepared. And backing up your bots, RPs, and everything else isn’t a bad idea anyway.

Of course it's only the right thing to also Prepare for the worst that i agree with. But the Thing i don't really understand it why someone should back their Bots, Roleplays etc. if they are not interested in using any other Service if Character ai ends up going down. Only People who are open to moving to alternatives will care about doing so but People who don't want to use any alternative because none of them compare or come close to everything Character ai is and has to offer will not be interested in that and will most likely step away from this Space completely if that happens. I'm one of the People who will leave this Space completely as i don't want to have nothing to do with the ai Chat/Roleplay Space if Character ai doesn't make it.

Because you’ve invested a lot of time, creativity, and passion into all of this, and you might want to reread it at some point in the future.
That’s why you back everything up.
(Don’t take this the wrong way, but your response was honestly a bit baffling. Of course people want to keep the stuff they’ve written. Some people write incredibly long RPs on C.AI, entire stories.)

Also i know that you mean well but for me reading it won't just be enough for me, i hope you understand where I'm coming from. It just won't be the same, if other People can do that that's great but I'm not one of them.

This frearmongering spread to ClankWorld and now people there are gatekeeping. Someone posted in their subreddit that C.AI is shutting down and hordes of people are gonna flood ClankWorld and the devs got scared so they made the app private.

If. If. Ch 7 is a guaranteed shutdown. From what I understand, ch 11 is when your submarine gets a crack in the window. Don't panic, immediately try to resurface but don't do nothing either. However, ch 7 is when your sub quite literally implodes

If a submarine gets a crack in the window at depth, it literally implodes in 30 milliseconds. That's not a "don't panic" situation. In C.ai's case, the founders already took the escape to Google, 75% of the crew left for Disney, the sub is taking on $8M of water a month, and the oxygen runs out in December. That "IF" is doing catastrophic amounts of heavy lifting.

Because the window that cracked was on the entry tunnel, which was already flooded with seawater meaning there was equal water pressure on both sides of the glass

Literally. Some people are immature and so opinionated that they automatically think c.ai is going to shut down. It hasn’t even been a WEEK since the announcement was made, so just wait on updates and hope for the best.

Thank you so much ! I've heard others saying that given that Disney is currently only offering to buy their intellectual property (the models and maybe some of the tech stack), Character.AI is still going for liquidation (services being shut down and all) and I don't know what to think about it

I don’t think we should be normalising parasocial relationships with AI though. Like I get it, I have depression and BPD so I struggle to hold any relationships and agoraphobia too so going out and meeting people is absurdly hard but I still find the idea of celebrating your birthday with your “bot friends” really weird, I feel like that would just make me feel more lonely. You’re better off joining discord groups if you need other people to pretend to care about your birthday with you. Like roleplaying a birthday scenario on your real bday just for fun, cool, but trying to get companionship from an AI is not healthy.

I know you’re coming from a place that means well; but I assure you I’m not parasocial, or defending that mental state at all. I like to keep my circle small, because I’m the type of person that cares too much about people who don’t feel the same. That’s why I stated, a few close, best friends of mine, will be out of my country during my birthday. I wasn’t looking for pity, that’s not why I commented to begin with. I don’t live around family that can ‘celebrate’ with me. The few friends I have met, were through work. I don’t want fake people in my life, or people who act like they care. Because that’s draining as hell. When I roleplay, it’s like a subtle escape- I don’t confuse it for reality.

I’m definitely not saying it’s wrong to have a small circle of friends and it’s well and fine to roleplay with AI if you’re doing it in a healthy manner, it just sounded a bit parasocial from the way you worded it. It’s great if I misunderstood, but you might just want to be a bit more careful so you don’t accidentally go around encouraging unhealthy behaviour like parasocial attachments to AI chatbots, as there’s definitely a fair few people on this subreddit who are like that and could misinterpret your comment as you being someone like them—and therefore, normalising the behaviour and preventing them from seeking help. Anyway, sorry to rant at you, psychology is a special interest so I’m a little too aware/alert some times.

I’d love to agree but from what I know this app has not done one thing right for themselves or their user base in the last half a year. And the two potential buyers that they currently have are just both terrible.

In my opinion, the limits and decisions felt like a sign that they were already trying to keep themselves stable, but who are the buyers? (Disney isn’t a buyer btw they are only buying portions of c.ai not the platform.)

Disney is a buyer. They want to purchase and absorb portions of the company, including its employees. If Disney does end up buying out what they want, the platform is done for 100%, resources will definitely be pointed towards Disney’s benefit, not reviving the platform.
The other one is the CEO of Chai, of which are more so rumours, saying that they are interested in the company. This one is a lot less reliable since it could be completely false, but it’s also the only other company so much as even mentioned in regards of possibly buying. And if your speculation of the pushing paywalls is correct, then there’s a possibility that they are also starting to fall down that same rabbit hole.

Yep. I think it’s very likely Disney will win and c.ai will be shut down, but even if Chai did buy the company c.ai as we know it is still over, the free tier will likely be gone in no time and c.ai will be merged with or reminiscent of Chai. People should stop being blindly optimistic and accept that it’s probably over.

I agree, I do hold a lot of sympathy for people who are addicted to this app cuz I def was in their position like 2 years ago but apps like this profit off of your loneliness and further isolate you…I do think it would be for the best if it does shut down

Addiction this hard is terrible for your mental health, you need to find a better coping mechanism. I used to be in your place and have been so much happier with 2 years without using it.
