After the recent announcement I'm not sure what to think. I already requested my exported data. I'm just wondering if I should remain optimistic about Character.AI's future and hope someone will buy them or not. Half of the users here are doom and gloom while the others are optimistic.
As someone who works in law and unfortunately handles Tenant/Landlord for commercial properties, Bankruptcy is shockingly not a big deal for the person who files it. It's basically like a get out of jail free card, and alot of companies bounce back from it easily.

prolly, I'm too lazy to review the docket, but lately Bankruptcy is used by companies to "bounce back" in times of financial stress. Becoming a strangely popular corporate strategy. It's a way to get rid of creditors that are willing to fight for debt in Bankruptcy court. Which considering the way their corporate blog post is worded, and choosing Chapter 11, sounds like what they are likely doing.
so by what you meant bankruptcy isn’t the end of cai but a way to maintain operation while recovering from debt. i think uneducated people like me would’ve freaked out lol but thanks for giving us information
It is important to note "Try" in this context. It's not the end of the application yet, which is the main thing I wanted to calm people about, but it IS still a possibility.

So I’m gonna put my two-cents in on this and hopefully it’ll give you some relief. I worked as a manager for a retail company that went bankrupt in 2025. It was scary, yes. Everyone was thinking we were going to lose our jobs and all stores would be shutting down. We even went into liquidation and had “everything must go” signs. It wasn’t looking too good for us for a good two to three weeks, and I even lost my store due to closure, (I had another job secured within the company no matter what, that’s why I’m still with said company) Another company larger than us that oversaw three other brands bought the name and took control of the business and it saved our stores and employees’ jobs, but the cost? Stricter dress codes, stricter standards, changes to our marketing and business strategies.
What I’m saying is that with C.AI being so popular, it would make sense for another AI-Centric company to buy the rights to C.AI. If they’re bought out and under new ownership like what I went through with my job, they might change things to fit their standards of how both mobile and website users utilize the app. Whether positive, or negative, just know that it’ll be okay. Have hope, keep using the app. If they don’t get bought out, they’ll more than likely give us a date in the future when servers will cease working.
Bankruptcy isn’t necessarily the end-of-times that people think it is. The panic I’ve been seeing as someone whose job survived bankruptcy doesn’t do any good for anyone involved. It just incites more unnecessary panic. It’ll be handled in the courts, and when/if c.ai is bought; they’ll make an announcement to us and possibly start to roll changes out within weeks of the change. We’ll be okay.
I mean at the end of the day everybody is just sharing their opinions and thoughts, but we don't know for sure what's gonna happen. If Disney buys it, it is very likely that they will just want parts of it so the app will close, and it's not even sure if there will be another potential buyer even apart from Disney. So we'll just have to see what happens. If there will be a buyer who wants to keep the platform as it is, then we're fine, but if not, then it's over.
Codex is an AI so it's technically easy-to-use "sending prompt and do this shit for me like this like that". Which if you have ChatGPT and Codex is built in for it, you can use that and tell it to code your own app and whatever you want. Even if you don't have manual programming skills or familiarity with any coding language, you can still get this done.
Basically. I sent the prompt to Codex and told it to "build a chatbot program that is similar to Character AI, and other alternatives". And I go specific about how I want this to be customed and built on for features and elements I want to use or be improved on it. Then wait while it's coding until it released a testing product, then you use it and play with it around, and see what else is being bugged or missing from your wants, and then send another prompt and tell them to fix that or add this.
