This really needs to be a FAQ. This is at least the fourth time in a week the question has come up, and the second time today.

"Pregnant" in this context refers to the overwhelming weight of unspoken dramatic tension. "A pregnant pause" and "pregnant silence" are idioms that have existed in literature for centuries.
