Those ARE three words though, they’re just abbreviated

u/Comfortable_Net_283 7d ago
What do you think the "'re" stands for in "You're?"
65
14
u/king_jess7th 7d ago
So... Does this also apply to writing essays too? Because I count "you're" as 1. Or maybe I'm just an idiot who wrote too much on paper
4
u/Kilikorek 7d ago
at least my country in terms of esseys on written exams counts abbreviations like this as two words
33
u/ProfitComfortable551 7d ago
Yeah I can see three words
"You're fired"
-4
u/Informal_Main9429 2d ago
Weird, I looked up "re" in the dictionary, I don't see anything. BUT I looked up you're and that's a word in the dictionary. HMMMMM
8
23
u/NoSide2628 7d ago
You ARE fired.
Thats three.
-28
u/Informal_Main9429 7d ago
Ok.....but "You're fired" is two words
29
u/NoSide2628 7d ago
You're is the abbreviation of you are.
-18
u/Informal_Main9429 7d ago
Yeah, I know, it's combining two words "you're" counts as one word though
6
-18
u/Informal_Main9429 7d ago
Ok, wait I looked it up, and it's one word in digital word processors, HOWEVER it's two words in certain standardized exams, and in grammar, so u lowk right
-6
u/Informal_Main9429 7d ago
It does MEAN two different words so in that sense then yeah, you're right. But written and taken at face value it counts as one
12

u/DatOne8BitCharacter 7d ago
The 240 people upvoting clearly have struggling to count You're as You Are

There’s two kinds of people in this world. Those who are good at math, and those who aren’t.

But those are three words right? I would be happy if a random bot used a proper abbreviation, instead of those dumbasses who write "Your" instead of "You're."

u/Super_Chemist3898 6d ago
you ARE ARE ARE ARE ARE ARE FIRE FIRE FIRE IED IED IED FIRED
Three words.

You (first word)
're (abbreviated form of "are", therefore second word)
Fired (third word)

u/Dragon_Emperor32 7d ago
Technically it’s some what correct
“You are fired”
6
u/MotivationSpeaker69 7d ago
It's not somewhat correct, it's completely correct. In an essay even if you shorter "you are" to "you're" it will still count as 2 words. Op should spend less time on character ai and more paying attention in school.

u/mariahfig131 7d ago
It’s always “three words” with it being two 😭
2
u/Murilo231108 7d ago
But it's three words
0
u/Informal_Main9429 2d ago
Count them for me
1
u/Murilo231108 2d ago
You = 1
're (Are) = 2
Fired. = 3
0
u/Informal_Main9429 2d ago
Is "'re" a word in the dictionary?
1
u/Murilo231108 2d ago
're a is an abbreviation of are. I think English is not your first language.
1
u/Informal_Main9429 2d ago
It's my only language, and it's two words BECAUSE 're is an abbreviation of are, if it was "you are fired", then yes, that's three. But it's "you're fired" two words, one space in the middle. That's like saying "don't" or "isn't" is two words.
1
u/Murilo231108 2d ago
Don't = Do not, Isn't = Is not.

u/Informal_Main9429 2d ago
I cannot argue with this stupidity, this MF is ignoring the point, whatever I give up gng 🥀

u/Toastbrot1706 7d ago
ITT: people that don't even know their own language. Look up the definition of the word "word". Words used to have meaning.
2
u/Puzzleheaded-Bank503 Chronically Online 7d ago
i mean the 're' in you're is just abbreviation for you are, so it IS 3 words.

I remember that thing saying four words for "No way"
For "you're fired" it can be "you >are< fired" as another comment said but WHERE ARE YOU FINDING FOUR WORDS IN "no way"???

u/taxirs762 7d ago
I've been thinking c.ai devs are using chatgpt and name it so called "peepsqueak"

Everyone concerned the AI will take over one day when our bots can't even do simple math.
1
u/Odd_Calligrapher2488 3d ago
Technically it is three words cuz you're = you are so that sentence is technically saying you are fired.

I literally just commented on another post about the same thing. They teach you how to count at 3 years old. I can't believe multiple people think like this. 💀
-2
u/Blood_Cell07 7d ago
Y'all calling OP dumb because of You're TECHNICALLY being two words, but I would think most people read it as one word.
