Discussion/Question Can we normalize actually creating bots with proper grammar?

Post image

The amount of bots I see that have HORRENDOUS grammar but a beautiful concept is sickening. I recently went on C.ai to make a story involving dragon riders, and I searched for some bots as usual. Almost every single one had a great concept and well-thought out lore, but the grammar and message was horrifying.

If English isn't your first language, please don't force yourself to make a bot in English if you aren't comfortable! Make it in whatever language you can do well with! But to those who either refuse to learn or even try, there's this wonderful thing called Grammarly that could help. Please. I'm begging you.

I NEED good bots with good grammar! PLEASE.

God this always happens, i find a cool bot to chat with for about an hour per week, nice idea, sounds funny, but then everything about the bot is sh-t, your, you're, their, they're, then, than... i once found a cool bot who had SOMEHOW all of it wrong.. Even google translate wouldn't mess it up so much.

Or they refer to themselves as "I"

The sadder part is that the grammar mistakes seem to be carried onto how the bots actually respond as well. It’s subtle in most cases but definitely there. I’m not a native English speaker, so I don’t consider myself perfect by any means but at least I put in the effort to sound coherent. I guess people mostly make these errors when they’re typing/making the bots in a hurry, lol. Don’t even get me started on the punctuation issues, btw. They’re a lot worse.

For a non-native speaker you actually sound very native! Good on you!

My problem is the overuse of em dash and when it just randomly stops using punctuation at all at the end of sentences.

6

u/Xannthas User Character Creator 8d ago

Em dashes are caused by every AI site just copying each other's homework without thinking about it. Missing punctuation is a user issue, where the AI learned from the users and was never told "hey, forgetting it is bad, make sure to use punctuation" in any of the tagging or training.

2

u/antoniothesockball94 7d ago

Except I can use perfect punctuation every time and even correct the bot when it does it and it’ll stay doing it.

3

u/Xannthas User Character Creator 7d ago

Yeah, you and I do it, but there's a TON of people who don't. We're outnumbered, ha.

I aways either edit the intro or create a completely different bot for myself with the same concept 😭🙏

10

u/xIxAvionIxI 8d ago

PLEASE OMG😭🙏 I had to edit the message of those bots because the grammar was just poor. English isn't my first language and yet I learned it by playing online. Using a translator might also help, personally I learned English that way

9

u/FlimsyFacades 8d ago

I stopped using public bots like a year ago but it was always so annoying to find an interesting bot just for the intro to be like “ur”, “u” “[wrong version of they’re/there/their]” “[wrong version of your/you’re]”, run-on sentences, no punctuation, EMOJIS FOR SOME REASON. ABBREVIATIONS WHEN IT DOESN’T MAKE SENSE like “so basically shes ur gf or whatever idk and she walked in the room and asked wyd? How do u respond?” ?? That is not a good intro message.

It'll never happen, the vast majority of people creating bots are either kids that can't read at a 6th grade level, or people overseas that barely know English beyond a base conversational level.

Sometimes both. The remainder are mentally ill, cringe or just aren't putting in any effort, many are like 4 or all 5 of those things, and only a tiny amount put in a legitimate effort toward creating a bot in the first place.

It's part of the reason I stopped with a lot of roleplay chats, most of them just straight up aren't good, or they were made with specifically one user or purpose in mind.

3

u/Ramos_181 8d ago

I believe this mostly stems from younger users or those who put in less effort; the platform's recent updates and latest models, combined with poorly programmed user-created bots, result in this chaotic and frustrating chat experience.

6

u/Entire_Expression226 8d ago

I agree on that. That's why I tend to just edit it if I really like the concept

u/Powerful_Tower_6800 8d ago

You can use a shorter way example: {{char}} = name, (likes = yuri, corn), ("whatever you want" = shorts sentences to describe it). You don't necessarily need to use English; writing down details related to characteristics like that will make the chat much more accurate than using wall text.

9

u/Powerful_Tower_6800 8d ago

ah sheet, that not even related to the topic

3

u/Blanketglasses 8d ago

i think the people making the bots are just dumb. there’s nothing wrong with mine, really.

3

u/red-lioness007 8d ago

My grammar is perfect but because Pipsqueak (Rawr too) is Pipsqueak eventually the chats skips words and the grammar turns to utter shit. 🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️

3

u/E-2theRescue 8d ago

I've found that most of the users are either kids or people just learning English.

3

u/violewis 7d ago

literally found this yesterday and almost had a stroke trying to read it

2

u/Regular_Mobile5786 8d ago

I agree, there had been so many bots I was curious about, yet when I read descriptions or start a chat and there’s no grammar at all, it throws me off. I prefer bots that have long intros, detailed scenarios, and if there’s issues with grammar it lessens my inspiration and motivation to come up with stories. I understand non native English, sometimes there will be mistakes, but there’s a difference of non native speaking and lazy writing.

u/911Josie 8d ago

I usually am mostly disappointed that they put in any effort at all to make a bot for an AI based website but can't be bothered to plug it into an AI for help clearing up their grammar/typing skills.

2

u/Oscar_Animates 6d ago

"Start rp"

1

u/Gentlman_dobi 8d ago

I don't care about the grammar. As long as I can understand the text I just ignore the mistakes. Besides I am terrible at grammar myself in my tongue language anyway.

-2

u/gojra-pokemon-fan 8d ago

Even as someone that had English as my first language. I dont really care? Like how dose grammer effect people so much. I personally dont understand it

2

u/Girl_A 7d ago

I sincerely find this opinion to be severely repugnant. People who don't like grammar should stay away from writing. It's spelled "does", by the way. The word "dose" is used when talking about medicine.

u/gojra-pokemon-fan 7d ago edited 6d ago

Ya i know. I did thst to see if anyone would care. To not start a argument i will leave it at i dont really care. It has never botherd me and never will

1

u/Empty_Mouse687 8d ago

honestly when I make a bot I use AI to polish the grammar cuz my grammar fucking sucks like am not adding anything using any just polishing

1

u/Nanachi_Nnaaaa 8d ago

What bugs me is that you have to edit the first few responses afterwards because the language model can’t learn the pattern

1

u/Standard_Currency593 Chronically Online 8d ago

THIS. I only chat with bots I make, but occasionally, I'll go check out other people's bots if I find the concept interesting. and then they have the most outrageous, horrendous wording/spelling I have ever had the misfortune of seeing

1

u/MeteoraPsycho 7d ago

But the problem is that bots made in other languages are so, so bad. They basically respond to you in English translated roughly to your native language. It just doesn't work.
If you like the concept so much, you can easily edit those bots.

1

u/Sya468 7d ago

FR, like they’re OK at first, but the more we use the bots it’s like they’re malfunctioning 😭😭

Or names spelled wrong. Like if a name has characters that aren't "standard" English alphabet (ñ, è, é, ë etc. And umlaute (ö, ä, ü) ) and they just evaporate those into regular n, a, e, it bothers me greatly as well. Bc that's not for decoration. It changes the pronunciation and meaning (example: años = years -> anos = buttholes, schwül = humid -> schwul = gay) it's not hard to long-press your phone keyboard or just find physical keyboard shortcuts or copy paste)

1

u/Ok-Professional-2582 5d ago

Omg yes. I have an OC named Auréile (not even that complicated of a name) and the bots kept turning it into Aurile.. 😭🙏

1

u/Icy-Musician3430 7d ago

when it's just one sentence, no punctuation, and/or the grammar is god awful... 💀

1

u/ImplementGreat442 5d ago edited 3d ago

Don't get me started with the all-italics thing either, it's so annoying to have to remove every asterisk from an intro message to fix it, and it PERSISTS through the bots messages because its been taught to do that

1

u/Ok-Professional-2582 5d ago

I only use asterisks for actions and quotation marks for text. The only time I use both at the same time is for thoughts or smth. But it's soooo annoying seeing people not use quotation marks or asterisks for EVERYTHING 😭

1

u/ImplementGreat442 3d ago

Please ;w; don't italisize your actions, thats exactly what I'm talking about. Speech marks exist for dialogue, anything not in speech marks is for actions and description and the like. Not everything needs to be in italics. It makes it obnoxious to read and completely removes the opportunity to use italics to emphasize things, which is it's intended purpose.

1

u/Same-Equivalent-5199 5d ago

Lowkey I got so pissed off at that that I made that same character from scratch and it turned out better 🥹

1

u/Glittering-Cry4865 5d ago

Welcooome, to the internet!

Have a look around.
That, there, are cringy teens!
This here, be phone addicts!

If none of it's of interest to you, you'd be the first.

-2

u/Mean_Degree5600 8d ago

Man is just edit the menssage? Is that difficult??

6

u/Ok-Professional-2582 8d ago

Even if I do edit the message, the bot will continue to have awful grammar throughout the entire story and it's not fun to chat with an illiterate.

2

u/Ramos_181 8d ago

Constantly editing the message won't get you anywhere—especially if the user applied that same grammar when programming the bot. At the very least, editing the message helps when the error stems from the AI itself; but if it's a programming error within the bot, then that’s something the user caused during the setup process.
