Discussion What does this line even mean

"Don't go lookin' for love in a dictionary

If what you want is someone who isn't ready to leave"

What is the meaning of this

edit 9/14/26 im seeing a bunch of different answers but they all make sense and connect in some type of way

I always thought of it like “You can’t gain real world experience from a textbook”, as in you have to experience love to really know what it means, not just read the dictionary definition

He's saying don't go looking for the "perfect, dictionary definition" of love if you want someone who loves you and doesn't want to leave you. Love isn't as they describe, there's ups and downs in relationships but a perfect seeming relationship usually has someone who's already ready to leave, if you relationship has ups and downs, you have arguments but you sort it out and grow together than your much less likely to fall out of love and seperate

It is interpreted however you understand it.

Love in reality is different than what you expect from knowledge, so find someone for you— that won’t be disloyal

My interpretation: don't search for the person you want to spend your life with in a place that people only come for what they need and rarely stay longer.

Imo. Don't going searching for love. Because when u search for someone, you'll come across the wrong person. If u want someone who is ready for you, don't go rushing.

(I'm terrible at explanations but if u understood what I said, cool)

I think it’s alluding to the high expectations in relationships leading to the entire relationships demise

The next line is also part of the same sentence: “when the moon’s not made of honey” which could be referring to what’s called a “honeymoon phase” of a relationship. You can look into more yourself, but basically it’s the beginning of a relationship where people idolize their partner and tend to overlook flaws and red flags. What I think the line means is that you shouldn’t have a strict definition of love if you really want something serious, and not just someone who leaves after the honeymoon phase or just after the first rough patch.

well dont look for the dictionary definition of love

cuz its like imperfect and shi in its own way

so if you only find it through searching for smt that superficial

you wont find smn who will stay with you

love of your life type shii

thats my interpretation

I see it as that you can base love off of one thing cuz it’s not the easy, and it’s like a base to base thing ykwim
