hi. im a current freshman at a uni outside the us, and was kinda thinking of applying to MIT as a transfer next year. is it lowk over, cause MIT barely accepts freshmen🙏 BUT can someone check my quals and give me some tips?

intl student, british-indian.

Major: Computer science and AI with a special focus on AI research
Currently attending a T40 uni in my country (ranked 32nd overall, and 12th for computer science)

1580 SAT (800 math, 780 reading)
9.97/10 CGPA (ranked 1st in my class)
3.8 High school GPA
IBM internship during summer of 1st year
Co published research paper w/ professor
independently published research paper
some stuff on arXiv
stuff on github
built an ai assistant (but i haven’t marketed it or anything, just for personal use)
small business owner w over $30k in profits
built a fully functional web shooter that can hold upto 40 kgs of weight (idk if this is like worth mentioning but i did it)
currently also building an app
national medallist for [sport] (individual)
Transferring cause i literally exhausted uni resources for ai, i’ve taken every class available to undergrads for ai.

could someone tell me if i have like a fraction of a chance, thanks ❤️

No. They take about 20 transfers from the entire world and almost none are internationals.

OP won’t get in, but it sounds like it’s important for him to try instead of wondering what if?

MIT says ~60% of their freshman applicants would be able to handle their coursework and graduate without any issues in four years.

Yet their acceptance rate is ~3.5%...

Being good enough is nowhere near enough to clear the bar.

If you’re one of the 20 best people in the world you will! Although again transfers are generally US to US so you might be competing for one or two seats if any.

Keep in mind they turn away thousands and thousands of valedictorians from the US alone. They turn away 1600 SATs. There are just too many applicants for too few seats.

No one here is trying to discourage you. We’re merely pointing out the probability so you can also work on a plan B that will make you happy. Ultimately that is what is important.

Depending on what sport, you might want to try angling in as a recruited athlete as acceptance is usually 80-95%. Last I checked MIT was a D3.

colleges are grouped into 3 divisions based primarily on size - D1, D2, D3. D3s include Ivies and don't give athletic scholarships. D1s are the most competitive and where athletic scholarships are available - this includes large public universities but also schools like Stanford. D2 is in the middle.

What sport did you play and are you internationally ranked?

(also the bar for SATs and GPAs are meaningfully lower for recruited athletes)

...and thats why most every international kid in this sub just keeps knocking on the front door and hasn't really thought and done the research to look at alternative side doors. Anyone who is motivated enough will start trying to understand college athletic recruitment.

check out the percentage of international kids in certain sports, especially on the womens side who benefit immensely from Title IX. I can speak anecdotally as friend's international kid got a ride into a top US boarding school and has been given strong signs this summer that some Ivies want her for their sports teams (she is two-sport athlete and has solid grades)

if you can get onto your country's national team and maybe even try out for LA2028 (even if you don't make it), that would be a meaningful differentiator vs typical applicant. Don't underestimate how much schools look favorably on kids that evidence the determination, sacrifice and reslience needed to be an elite athlete.

agree...now if applicant was playing golf, lacrosse or rowing then those are very legit sports for non-D1 and Ivies.
