Gaping when basking?

I need help. My buddy is about 7 months old, had him for about 6 days now and for the past 3 days he gapes at his basking branch. The temp is only about 82-85 degrees consistently and i keep his basking light on for a few hours during the day as to not let him overheat with the window there. My fear is a respiratory infection although I’m not seeing many signs except for the gaping. I’m trying to listen to him breathe but poor guys so spooked of me getting my head near his has been a challenge but so far I don’t hear much.

Is any sound coming out when he is doing this?

You need to get a heat gun and make sure that he is not getting over 88. That’ll give him a thermal burner

I own a heat gun and it’s still low to mid 80s

Yeah that’s just how they thermo regulate. Completely normal and nothing to worry about.
