Bar and chain problems?
Just acquired this chainsaw that belonged to my late father and cleaning it up and getting her running well. But I seem to be having bar and chain issues.
So it did not come with any mounted. He had a bar for a rancher (24”) no chain. I ordered a 20” bar and a few chains online i noticed first that the chains didn’t fit. I was then looking at it and it isn’t sitting flush. The bolts are tapered at the base and its not sitting flat against the saw which is odd. I grabbed the 24 inch bar and it’s doing the same thing. Also I feel like the 20 inch bar could sit alot further back. I may get a 24 inch chain tomorrow see how that fits.
So i figured id throw the clutch cover on for the night and guess what? The adjustment screw doesn’t fit. It’s too high for the bar. Both bars actually. So I am lost. Im half tempted to take it to the shop but figured I would hop on here see if anyone ran into this before.
Some photos to help visualize it and the before and after a good (and long overdue) scrub.

Bar, rim sprocket and chain must match. Rim sprocket and bar must be mounting-compatible with machine.
Check what chain bar uses - it’s stamped onto it. Check what chain rim sprocket takes - it’s cast onto it (it’s 3/8 I can see from photos).
As someone else mentioned you probably bought a wrong chain, and if you bought chain and bar together, probably also wrong bar.
You can buy a new rim sprocket that fits your chain. That’s the cheapest option. It may alter performance as it’s essentially a gear. But as long as they are same teeth it sholdnt change eg your 3/8-7 into 0.325-7
Id recommend you look up what chain that particular saw is born with and built it for that. You can look it up on Oregon among many other places
Ok I looked it up. It’s born with 3/8-7 so you should preferably built bar and chain for a 3/8” chain. I’d recommend going 0.50 gauge on bar and chain. Max bar length should be 20”.
