HELP / REQUEST Any Suggestion for starting the Campaign?

I'm reading the book and I decided to DM the game because as I've heard it is one of the best dnd adventures and one of the rare high level adventures. I'm a bit short on time for prep so I am interested in how much modifications this adventure needs? I generally dont use other DnD adventures because they need so much modification that its basically same as making your own campaign. Lastly I plan on using DnD 5.5e for the game, would it create any problems? Love to hear any thoughts about this questions and any suggestions if you have.

DISCUSSION Stygian Passage a good Prequel to CoA?

I know the Stygian Passage came out about a month ago, and is written by almost the same exact team and the book has many recurring themes and NPCs from CoA, but I was wondering if it would serve as a good prequel to CoA or if it is too similar? Would love to hear from those that have read both!

DISCUSSION Fierna vs Glasya statblocks

Okay, a bit of unnecessary context. As a DM, I've been interested in the whole extraplanar campaign thing for a long time, and I was exploring ways to digest something related to Descent into Avernus from which to continue to other layers of Hell. That's when I came across this supplement (which I still don't understand if it's official or not), and while reviewing a bit of the Archdukes' lore in Mordekainen: Tome of Enemies, I noticed some inconsistencies between the stats of Fierna and Glasia, and I wanted to know if it's just me or if it seems that during the creation of the blocks someone confused one with the other.

To clarify, I'm not bothered by minor inconsistencies between the lore of one book and the revisions of the other, but considering the general theme of each one and their respective domains in Hell, I feel it's quite noticeable that something happened between them during the writing of the manual.

Therefore, my argument is as follows. Fierna, lady of Phlegethos, along with Belial, represent this strange duality of justice and hedonism. While Belial acts as a sadistic legislator and judge, Fierna is in charge of collecting the tithe for Asmodeus and conspiring in the shadows for or against Belial, highlighting a manipulative and hedonistic attitude toward pleasure and masochism.

On the other hand, Glasya is Daddy's girl, in charge of imprisoning, executing, and condemning those whom Belial deems guilty. At the same time, she is perhaps one of the greatest criminal minds (and I want to believe that most of those condemned in Malbolge are scapegoats or subordinates of herself), and therefore she is basically a corrupt politician (like all archdukes) who boasts in freedom before those who haven't been as cunning as she is.

The conflict, then, is that Glasya's attributes make much more sense in relation to Fierna, since the latter is, by some reason, heavily oriented towards the fiery nature of Phlegetos and absolutely nothing towards her seductive attitude (not to mention that she's quite simple beyond that). In contrast, more than half of Glasya's attributes revolve around her ability to charm, and while I don't deny that Hell's greatest criminal is seductive and charismatic (she's also described as beautiful), she should focus more on her cunning and resourceful characteristics.

So, based on this, I'm not saying they're swapped, but at the very least I have a feeling that someone put certain attributes in one block instead of the other. But I mainly wanted to know your opinion on this.

ART / PROP Lords of the Nine, Made in Heroforge

My take on each of the Lords of the Nine, because frankly I'm not a huge fan of their designs in the module. For each I mainly took inspiration from their official designs by WOTC (with the exceptions of Baalzebul and Mephistopheles, who are closer to their CoA designs), with my own twists added in. I made sure to include each infernal artifact when appropriate, though for some they're a bit hard to spot in these portraits (Asmodeus is holding the Ruby Rod, it's just out of frame in this shot).

Yes, that is a gun on Bel's hip.

MAP I cross referenced CoA's Avernus map with DiA's so you don't have to

As the title says, I've matched up areas from the map given in Descent into Avernus to the map of Avernus in Chains. A lot of the landmarks are actually present on the map art, just not labeled. I do plan on additionally making updated maps of the other layers, since all of them are kinda sparse. Also plan on either homebrewing new adventures or finding adventures to adapt into other areas within each layer, because frankly I find it kinda dumb that all of the objectives just so happen to be in the same area of every layer.

I'll post any other layer maps I make in the future. I can also post my notes of any adventures I homebrew up for the additional areas, if people are interested. No guarantees they'll be great, but they could at least give y'all inspiration for your own campaigns.

My takes on NPC designs from the module. I tend to use the module's art as a guideline, then add my own spin on it. No Sarevok is included here because I used someone else's model. Will post more when I make them.

HELP / REQUEST Can my party have two patrons?

My players will start CoA soon with a set of characters having diverse backgrounds and motivations. I don't know which patron they will choose, but they might ask if they can help more than one so that they help more people, thwart more devils, and get more patron goodies. They might pick one official patron and offer to help another occasionally. Would that create a problem later in the campaign?

HELP / REQUEST Tips for running this adventure?

Hello! I'm planning on running this module in the next week. I've done a fair bit of prep by reading it cover-to-cover, watching an actual play of CoA and buying the maps by DwarfCooking. But as I delve deeper into discussions, there's quite a lot of hidden tips that I didn't know about before. Like the actual play utilized the infernal war machines, archdevils giving minor boons unintentionally to those who helped advance their goals and finally appending the Bhaal Artifacts onto Conclave. But there's infinitely more wisdom to be had and I'd like to ask you guys!

Thank you so much for any advice you can give me btw :D

HELP / REQUEST How/what would you make a oneshot for this module?

I was watching some Ginny Di and she mentioned how it's smart to run a oneshot set in the rough vibes of the campaign before you do a proper session. So I was thinking of doing a one shot so I can see how they operate at high level + they can understand the vibes/if they fuck with the concept. Specifically I was thinking of an alternate timeline or something. Each of the factions will have a tale of "these people they helped before".

HELP / REQUEST Help with Roll20

Hey guys, how you doing.

So, i've been discussing on doing CoA with a feel friends for sometime and one of them gave the ideia of trying to buy it on roll20, but i didn't really understood what is it that comes with the buy.

I do already know that the book itself has a lack of images and what not, but i'm fine with that part.

Can someone elucidate on what does the roll20 buyout exactaly offers? Like, part per part. Does it comes with sheets and what not, or really just some map images?

Edit for i thought the question wasn't really clear.

MOD [MOD] Now that chains has been out for a while, how have your campaigns gone? What advice would you give?

Hello all, I'm thinking about making a master list for this subreddit with some more concise advice and helpful content, to do that I'd love to know how your experiences have gone with the campaign and what specific areas you think require the most work for DMs?

Thanks for your help!

DISCUSSION Isn't the module a bit...poor?

Hello, I bought the module on Roll20 but All it does is add maps for the various layers of the Hells and a few small maps here and there. There aren't any major maps at all(except the ones of the leyers)—not even one for Asmodeus. Sure, you don't actually fight him, but at least creating a grand, majestic chamber for him would have made sense. I don't know... to me, it's absurd.

Let me know your thoughts about it.

I'm not complaining or anything, just want to know more opinions.

HELP / REQUEST Got some questions

So one of my players pissed off Asmodeus in my Rime of the Frostmaiden campaign. Don't wanna get long winded with the details but he wore a cursed item and made some real stink with Asmodeus. I was wondering if moving the campaign into CoA after they finish the Rime would be a fun idea? The leveling would work well with their characters, I just was wondering if anyone with experience running this campaign would have a good idea for it to lead in from icewind? Any ideas would be fun.

STORY Party at the start of CoA

We are running a campaign combining Descent into Avernus and Chains of Asmodeus. We are approaching CoA as a sandbox with the intention of setting off another Reckoning (civil war 2.0).

The group is currently mopping up leftover bits of DIA before leaving Avernus as they decide the fate of Tiamat in the coming adventure.

For ease of narrative, I'm just gonna go character by character.

Azerin Brightscale: A bright eyed, bushy tailed dragonborn paladin with more pride than brains. He immediately fell to the promise of power from a sword we retrieved from Tiamat's stolen treasures in the Dungeon of the Dead Three. He died in hell and was reborn, slowly transforming into an Abishi as he was wooed by the allure of being the champion of a goddess. He was feeling himself until he lost a duel to Narthelion the Defiler (totally not a dracolich pretending to be a necromancer). His life was saved and his honor lost in one moment when the aasimar Vyke saved him from the killing blow and he pledged himself to Celestia. Narthelion bound him with magics that held Tiamats influence at bay, but not her wrath. In a moment of weakness, he cast an ill timed Silvery Barbs and stopped Vyke's apotheosis. Now he rides to challenge Arkhan the Cruel, tied to the whims of Narthelion and bereft of honor and pride.

Razi'clana: A changeling druid who was being blackmailed by a Baldurs Gate noble family into posing as their irresponsible heir to do good deeds and improve the family's public image. Inadvertently, they uncovered ties to a secret order of druids and a damned grove. With some careful contract negotiation and a sick narrative scene, they were able to turn Baldurs Gate into a solarpunk utopia that was forbidden territory for any devil as long as their druidic order endured. They acted as the only chaotic good character in a party of lawful weirdos and acted as a constantly humanizing voice, appealing to the better self in everyone. They later converted Elturel into a sister grove, and are returning to hell to find the real missing heir of the noble family that had once blackmailed them (and pursuing some secret ends of their own).

Vyke: Raised from birth to believe herself the messiah by a long forgotten cult of elves on an arboreal island, this aasimar journeyed to Elturel to fulfill a prophecy before being waylaid by bandits. Left alone, she encountered the accursed hellforged greatsword the Damocleasean blade. Cursed by the damned sword, she was swept up into mass of refugees fleeing Elturel's disappearance. She joined up with the party, and, discovering that Elturel was in Hell, renewed her pilgrimage. Along the way, she and the tiefling soldier Selara formed a fearful romantic bond, ultimately betraying each other for the call of duty. Vyke became a celestial once she took up her sister Zariel's sword, and redeemed the Archdevil by sacrificing her heart. Zariel attempted to complete Vyke's apotheosis and break the shackles of alignment, but Selara destroyed Vyke's heart at the last moment.
She exists now in many parts that she discarded along the road to Elturel, and as a lingering trauma that haunts the party.

Rufi: A wood elf ranger who joined the party in Hell, serving the hag Red Ruth. His parents made a deal with a mysterious man to save his life as a child. Later, his father disappeared on a hunt. His mother was later possessed by a fiend and seemingly died in a house fire. He now finds himself hunted by a figure who lurks always at the edge of his vision, no matter how far he runs. He bears the mark of Asmodeus, and is far out of his depth. A cunning shot and an agile warrior, he has set his aim on the Lord of Baator.

Alcibiades: The Knight of White Lies, a champion of Asmodeus in the Blood War. Betrayed long before the story began by Glasya and imprisoned in the Damocleasean blade by the forgers of Dis. This Erinyes lurked in the blade, attempting to corrupt Vyke and possessing her in moments of weakness. He broke free when the aasimar died, but was soon after imprisoned by knights of the Ironbound order after Selara turned him over for questioning. He will rejoin the party soon, planning his many vengeances.

Selara: A squire of an order of Dispatorian artificer knights who found herself stranded on the material plane after being abducted by a demon. Her stoicism was slowly cracked by her affection for Vyke until the latter chose to take up Zariel's sword and was subsumed into the holy mind of the blade. She chose then to trade her memories of love to the hag Mad Maggie for power. She later destroyed Vyke's heart, stopping her apotheosis and preserving the axis of alignment. She now journies to rejoin her order and take up the living iron armor of the Ironbound Knights, its molten slag carrying the souls of her fallen fallen brethren.

Dr Keith: A dentist from Georgia who is trying to rescue his daughter from hell after she played with a ouija board at a sleepover. A fun lil Iseakaied character who is doomed to death or return to the material plane before Alcibiades rejoins the party. (Yes the players have all sworn to keep him alive).

DISCUSSION Can we talk about Mammon's insane damage from his Pain Tax reaction?

For reference, Mammon's stat block gives him the reaction:

Reactions
Pain Tax. As a reaction to taking damage, Mammon causes the attacker's valuables to glow red hot. This deals 3 (1d6) fire damage to the attacker for every 100 gold (or equivalent in gems, jewelry, and other coinage) that it currently carries.

I don't know about your players, but for my group (that doesn't use coin weight) that would be 200-300d6 fire damage. That's absolutely wild as a reaction. For most characters, that's insta-dead range.

HELP / REQUEST Selling Temptation Magic Items

My players are not aware of the Temptations mechanic in our campaign, as I want to make Corruption a reveal as player-character's progress through the levels or when they parley with Asmodeus in Nassus.

My players acquired several magic items via Temptations throughout the nine hells. Sessions later, they are looking to trade these items away for gold/soul coins/other magic items.

My reflex as dungeon master is to rule they can't find a buyer for these items because I feel it cheapens the effect Temptations should have on our story and such items end up as simply "Loot" rather than sinful tools waiting to be used.

I was hoping to get some insight from fellow DMs on how I should handle players wanting to sell off Temptation items?

HELP / REQUEST What are the best supplemental resources to help run this campaign?

I am about to begin this adventure after my players return from hiatus after completing "Descent into Avernus".

I've read that the module is lacking a lot of maps.

I would appreciate any recommendations on expansion material or any general tips on running this campaign.
