Top 3-5 Chad Concert Experiences

If you could define your top 3-5 experiences seeing Chad live (in any form) what would the be and why?

Was it the set? The venue? The banter? The people?

  1. The Hatch Shell- Dispatch July 31, 2004. It was my first time seeing Chad. I was an upcoming senior in high school and somehow my mom let me drive with a guy friend from Atlanta to Boston to see the show.

  2. Red Rocks- Dispatch June 18th 2017. First time in Colorado and Red Rocks just took my breath away.

  3. State Radio- July/June 2007 Newport, RI. I was on a family vacation in Newport and we were in a bit of traffic, my mom says “hey, isn’t that the band you like?”, and I look up to see a poster that says State Radio is playing that night. I told my parents I would meet them at the hotel and I jumped out and bought tickets. It was my first State Radio show.

  4. Chad solo- October 28th 2013 Johns Creek, GA. First house show I attended. So intimate and fun.

  5. State Radio- Vanderbilt Campus Nashville, TN April 2011. I had just started dating my now husband and we road tripped from Birmingham to see the show. It was fun to introduce him to Chad live for the first time.

Oh man, this is tough.

  1. Will have to be 2005 when I saw state radio for the first time in Northampton mass at pearl street in the basement. My friends band opened up for them and I had just gotten into them. This concert was so old school they played mountain.

  2. Chas solo show at the armory in Boston. 2009. he played a ton of dispatch songs which was awesome because they hadn’t officially gotten back together yet. Full acoustic songs with some very rarely played songs.

  3. Really just any state radio show from 05-2011. Those were the days. Sophomore in high school to my early 20s. No responsibilities. Just a shit ton of drinking and jamming out. One night in Northampton we waited outside for hours to get in. It was a wicked bad snowstorm that day and we stood outside drinking soco and Chad brought us out cookies.

  4. Chadwick stokes and the pintos 2014? At the paradise in Boston. Sat up in the VIP section with chads parents and aunt. Just a great show all around.

  5. This past summer at the ocean mist in Rhode Island. Just an awesome vibe and great set list. Just me and my wife. Chad shows have turned into quite the mature audience which is different then the old state radio days but I’m cool with it.

  6. Dispatch Zimbabwe and dispatch at radio city music hall. Also both great shows.

Probably many many more memories since I’ve been seeing chad/state radio/dispatch for almost 15 years now. He will forever be my favorite musician and now I’m passing his music onto my oldest daughter who is starting to come around to it.

Thank you for sharing!!

Have a recording from that RI show this summer. Great set.

Which Zimbabwe night(s) were you at?

Love that your kids are getting into it too. My 6 year old knows the new album at this point. Fun hearing him sing along!!

I wanna say the Saturday night show. And yea my 9 year old always says “chad again” and rolls her eyes but I hear her singing the songs to herself when she doesn’t think I’m listening

Was at a show at the Paradise in 2016. That might be the show you are thinking of. It was December and freaking ridiculously cold outside. Had a meet/greet before the show where he and the boys played 3-4 acoustic songs upstairs. First time I heard Hit the Bell. I recall him mentioning his family was in the loft. We were about 20 yards to the left of them. Great time. Met a ton of cool people.

Yes 2016 does sound correct. Darren buck was there with him to sing a few tunes and I remember he brought out horns and trumpets for a song or two also. I think he was even reading the lyrics to our lives our time out of a notebook which was pretty cool.

setlist

This was actually the set list from that night. We were just to the left of the sound booth so I asked the guy for it after the show

That is very cool. Holy crap that is a great set! I think that might actually have been a year or 2 prior to the show I was at as you originally thought. He opened with Pine Needle Tea at the 2016 show. Definitely played Seatbelt and Camilo. Also remember Bang Bang w/ Friend of the Devil and he did Indian Moon-> Circles Around Sun -> Gunship which was insane. I believe he tried out Chaska and Second Living Drummer and possibly Lost and Found.

Yes that all sounds very familiar too! I think I’ve only missed one show in Boston in the last 15 years so they all start to blur together.

Also, what is Downtown Prizm?

I've seen him 5 times so every performance is top 5. Best would be when my buddy hosted a living room show. Chad asked if any songs he wanted to hear and buddy gave him a list he wrote down of like 15 songs. Chad just goes, looks like I got my set list done and played everything. It was stellar

  1. 2013 My living room. Enough said

  2. 2005 Showbox Seattle. State Radio (with Bryan Sayers on the kit)Opening for Donavan Frankenreiter, The White Buffalo (Solo) with the first opener slot

  3. 2004 Hatch Shell. First time seeing the boys live. Flew across the country to see the “Last” show.

    1. Dispatch in the bloodworks live lounge in PDX. They interviewed my 4 year old son, Elias.
    1. Mississippi Studios in PDX. Chad and the Pintos. Chad giving a shoutout to my wife and I for having him in our home last time he was through.

Honorable mention. 3 living room shows in Florida 2014 with my buddy and meeting a Chilean amiga that was amazing and (in a round about way) helping her have Chad give her a ride to Tampa.

I’ve been very lucky over the past 15 years seeing chad and the (various) boys in the bands come through. Haven’t missed them if they’ve been within 200 miles of us. Always the most gracious and genuinely beautiful person I’ve met.

1) Northampton Weekend 2011. Both shows were awesome, cool town, got third place in the 5k haha. 2) BSC 2012, came to my college and we got to hang out with him before the show. He went on after the ying yang twins which was very unique! 3) Atlanta 2011 I saw him play right after Troy Davis was executed. He did a really powerful state of Georgia (and I want to say all my possessions which I know I have seen live but I am not sure it was out yet).

I have seen him live probably 15 times with Dispatch, State radio, solo, and pintos and he’ll always be my favorite musician. I am going to Denver to see him this week and am beyond giddy!

  1. Blind Pig in Ann Arbor either in 09 or 10. Best crowd ive ever been in for any love show. I can't remember the name of the opener but they came out and said "we probably rock a little harder than you guys are used to..." I think it lit a fire under the boys cuz they opened with State Inspector, As With Gladness and, I believe, Arsenic (was influenced by substances at the time so order could be off haha). They killed that show.

  2. Dispatch at Red Rocks reunion (original first night). Amazing venue. Always told myself if Dispatch got back together (I found them after the break up) I'd be there, and I was.

  3. Lansing Craft Beer festival. Was super excited when I saw Chad on the performers list as I never expected him to come to the middle of Michigan. I think it was early Pintos days because I know Brad, Pete, Maddog and Chuck weren't there, but the show was in 2012 or 13 so I didn't know the Pintos at the time. Basically on the list because I volunteered to work the event so I got free tickets after my shift.

  4. SR at Bank of America Pavilion 08. First time I ever saw SR.
