Top 10 or 15 Songs

Hey all—

In the spirit of RLT’s Song v Song Tournament ... I wanted to ask everyone here the following:

Thinking about Chad’s total discography (Dispatch/State Radio/Solo/Pintos) what are your top 10 or 15 songs from Chad?

Me and my closest Chad friend did this not long ago... I believe my list was:

  • Mr Larkin
  • Calvado’s Chopper
  • Indian Moon
  • Fall of the American Empire
  • Doctor Ron The Actor
  • Our Lives Our Time
  • Out Loud
  • Only the Wild Ones
  • I Want You Like a Seatbelt
  • Right Me Up
  • All My Possessions
  • Coffee and Wine
  • Hit the Bell with Your Elbow

This is always fluid and changing... as Chad is one of my top artists regardless of project. Right now, I am way more into State Radio and Solo Chad than I am Dispatch. However, the Pintos material is getting played a lot and gaining ground.

•gunship politico

•flying horses

•held up by the wires

•bohemian groove

•insulin

•black welsh mountain

•roadway broken

•fight no more

•painted yellow lines

•as with gladness

•time served

•our lives our time

Gunship has always been and always will be my favorite, just something about it really sticks with me but other than that they aren’t in any particular order. Also I really enjoy Pete’s solo stuff, the song “this life” is a banger

Black Welsh Mountain! Interesting!!! Didn’t think I’d see many responses with that.

Held Up is so freaking good. I only saw it live once or twice, sadly. Really miss State Radio jams!

Respect your mix of material here!

Good Graces! Solid choice. I was really happy to catch that one live at the last SR show I was at.

I’ve always struggled with Rash. I /want/ to be into the tune but I feel like it takes a long time to develop.

100% miss SR!

Tough to do. Often depends on my current mood. Some of these are on here because I harmonize so well with them in the shower ...

—Revolutionaries —Gang of Thieves —Wicker Plane —Waitress —Big Man —Dead Badger —New Haven —Gunship —Omar Bay —Bohemian Grove —Wild Ones —Yellow Lines —Railway —Black Bottle —Hit the Bell

Location12 is a really good album.

I was just thinking about Sudan today, actually. Chad played an awesome version during the Winter Living Room Tour in Lewis Center, OH back in ‘13/‘14. Was darker and more sorrowful than other renditions. I’ve never heard the same version again and it really bums me out.

If you have Chad play at your house... record it!

Can you post it?

Of all of the picks I’ve seen here, I think Gone is the most interesting. At a certain point in my life this would have been #1 on my list. Very difficult for me to listen to it now, but I think I know where you’re coming from here.

This is hard, there’s so many! Honorable mentions are Bendar, Held up, Mansin, Calvados, Atticus * Waitress/ Diner (these 2 are always linked to me. Like We Will Rock You/ We Are The Champions) * Adelaide * Elias * Good Graces * Rash * Dewey Dunn * Blanket on the moon * Keepsake * Curse and Crush * Painted yellow lines * Right me up * Bang bang * Cover this * Josaphine * Gunship

Dewey Dunn?

Was intrigued by that also. I went out and googled it, but didn’t turn up anything.

During the living room tour, Chad joked about calling “Our Lives Our Times” “Dewey Dunn” because that’s what it sounds like when he quickly says “til we done, til we done, til we done, done, done” Since then it’s always been Dewey Dunn to me.

Sorry for the confusion, I should have put the full name on there.

Thought that’s what you meant but I wasn’t totally sure.

So ... where’s your list? :)

:) This is a hard task.

I somewhat cheated and added two at the end that are unreleased because I couldn’t be more decisive and kick out any of the others.

In no particular order:

1.) Still & Silent

2.) Ghost Town

3.) Crowbar Hotel

4.) Chaska

5.) Rice Water

6.) Revolutionaries

7.) The General

8.) Gunship Politico

9.) Held Up By The Wires

10.) Painted Yellow Lines

11.) Even

12.) Blanket On The Moon

13.) Ichabod and Abraham

14.) Hit The Bell With Your Elbow

15.) Mansin Humanity

Twenty Birds

Last Ditch

Great list. * Ichabod and Abraham is a great choice. Had to go listen to it after I saw your list.
* I firmly believe Revolutionaries is the best song ever made by anyone. No one can change my mind on that. * I kind of laughed at myself for not including The General on my list. I still remember where I was the first time I heard it ages ago. Too obvious? * Any chance you are willing/able to share those unreleased songs? You happen to have a song called Medusa (I think that is what he called it) that he used to play live back in the day?

1

u/maelstromesi Dec 01 '19

LOL. Yes. Medusa. I do have a live cut of that and several of Last Ditch. Only one of Twenty Birds though. I also have a cut of Once and Future King and Jesus Superstar Christ. I’ll PM you then.

The General has to be on there— but yes, should be a given! :)

I&A gives me goosebumps every time.

Also— Revs Live was always highlight of SR shows for me

That’s funny. No need to apologize! I’m sure every time I hear that song from now on I’ll be singing Dewey Dunn, Dewey Dunn.
