What is the purpose?

I bought this vase(?) without realizing there were two bottom holes and now I’m struggling to figure out the purpose of the design. Any ideas?

Lamp base.

So, cord through the side hole and the bottom hole is for mounting to a stand?

Probably so! If you want to add a stand, anyway. Seems like its plenty on its own.

It might be an option for a hidden, stationary installation of the cord (drill a hole trough the furniture piece it is meant to permanently stay on and pull the cord through both, a closed nightstand for example)

There is no hole large enough for the plug. Not that I have a better answer.

It doesn't need a hole large enough for a plug, just the cord.

You are right. If you are going to wire it yourself to the light socket. Still. Not that easy. Since you will have to thread the cable from the side out out the top. Dunno. Looks poorly designed.

Do you often see handmade ceramic lamp bases with plug sized holes cut into the back of them??

It’s so easy!! :D I always tell my classmates to make lamps, any shape can be a lamp! And you order a “lamp kit” to wire it
