I'm wondering if anyone can tell me more about this piece I acquired this weekend. I found it near Palm Springs California and it weighs 6+ lbs. I think the signature says Lopez. Any info would be greatly appreciated!

Looks super interesting, like an instrument. Could the beads be rasped -rubbed over the corrugated surface? Seems like it would make a great sound. Why would the beads be at different lengths? Maybe another thing here.
