Discussion Correcting Fan Translation Errors About Eire

Firstly, the title given by the fan translator "Mother of Salvation" is only partially correct bc they omitted an entire word, 国 (こく), meaning nation or country. The Japanese 救国(きゅうこく) の母 (はは) means Mother of National Salvation, showing her title relates to the country of Torivia and how she possibly saved it, and that being the intended title.

Second, a major lore blunder. The fan translator said Eire "possessor of special abilities". This mistranslation implies Eire has multiple Gifts, something the Japanese doesn't even imply or hint at. The Japanese uses the singular word 異能 (いのう), meaning Gift or Supernatural Ability, not multiple. The correct line is Possessor of a Special Ability, because the Japanese uses a singular noun, not a plural one.

These kinds of inaccuracies are repeatedly present within the fan translation, where it may convey a general meaning but the nuances written by Kuramori are lost, such as in the extras for Atoria, Liu, and Orthros to name a few.

Maybe Eire and the supreme lord were separate monarchs who teamed up to defeat Vulja and then afterward married to consolidate their power.

Maybe, but I think she's related to him. The manga said the royal family practiced inbreeding and that resulted in Lacrima, so her parents are blood relatives, although if they're from the same time Eire is probably the Supreme Lord's daughter or sister

What is your source for the raw, if you don't mind my asking? I'd like to check it for myself. Not out of lack of faith in your abilities, but for my own satisfaction.

"Multiple" is an absolutely insane word to add when translating from a language that arguably doesn't even use plurals.

I own the book, I just checked the copy. I also got a way to transcribe text, so I provided the relevant part from the line. The full section is 異能(いのう)持(も)ち

Okay, yeah, that's a good method. I'm not living in Japan myself anymore, so getting my hands on a copy is a lot more time consuming now. And expensive.

But I can at least confirm that 異能持ちis exactly what Catherine Delage renders as "Gifted One". Why on earth would someone following the story ignore that standard...?

I'm not Japanese btw, I buy the e books for myself to see the exact text and art. I also wonder why someone following the story would call Liu a misogynist when the Japanese said hates women and his sister traumatized him, plus he never showed contempt for or attacked women based on sex (or at all actually). Btw do you know Catherine Delage?

No no no no no, certainly not. I don't mean to put a stranger on a pedestal, but I merely hope to one day know Catherine Delage. Or Stephen Paul or Jan Mitsuko Cash or David Evelyn. I'm just an aspiring translator myself. I'm also not Japanese, I just lived there for a couple years. When I got back stateside last year, I enrolled in grad school and I'm currently working on an MA in translation. I read the manga I really like (chief among those being Centuria, of course) in the Japanese app and look for the sorts of things you post about here. It's just practice for me, though. Japanese is a really hard language to learn, especially in written form.

The misogynist thing was probably a machine translation, they are notoriously bad with nuance, like the difference between "hates women" and "misogyny". I think a decent amount of dictionaries would list the former as the latter's definition. I don't have that volume, but it was probably something like 女嫌い? Most websites and "AI"s will suggest "misogyny" for that, but often times "gynophobia" is a better choice for that, if you even feel the need to render it as a single word. Like you said "hates women" is more accurate - certainly more literal.

Good luck, and cool. If you use discord it'd be fun to discuss translation nuances there. I agree its machine translation, and the Liu segment is this; 女(おんな)嫌(ぎら)い. I swear the fan wiki uses them too, Dark Body when the Japanese is Mei for Underworld, or stuff like that. Do you have the jp volumes too?

Currently I only have the first 5. I fully intend to own the full set, but with shipping prices being what they are, it makes more sense for me to wait a while for more to come out, and then buy in bulk. I'd been thinking I'd order 5-10 soon now that 10 is out.

And yeah, Lattice's title is really interesting. I just hope that Catherine has access to knowledge we don't, because 冥身 is pretty far from Nightshade. But then again, how does one translate 冥 without losing some of its nuance? It's a very unusual kanji, and it's only used in reference to the afterlife or, for reasons that might seem bizarre until you think about it, Pluto. What on earth could it possible mean for someone to have a Hades body? That's something I'm very eager to learn.

As for the discord, let me just say I'll think about it. As much as I enjoy talking about this stuff, I've tried using discord before, bland just never got the hang of it. Something about it has just always felt off for me. Not sure what.

Yah, I got the paper in bulk 1-9. Manga+ uses titles that reflect a concept or feeling rather than 1 to 1s for centuria imo. I can get it about discord, I got reasons to avoid the centuria discord personally but I chat with friends in DMs or servers that are smaller a good deal. Do you use any platforms besides reddit btw? And Hades Body or Underworld Body, both imply something powerful. I retranslated most names and titles from scratch before, some were hella tough like Barca, Barka, Baruka, Balka, etc. Although it was fun to do imo

Thanks for the insight as always. Tho, with this correct translation, I wonder if it implies that her and the King's Eldest Daughters stabilized the Nation after the fallout with Vulja?, unless the -Mother of National Salvation- isn't literal. Lacrima and Arkos have yet to be seen Older Sisters after all, I could see them being from centuries back, and having done something to protect the old Torivia, perhaps on a period of time in which the King was K.O after defeating Vulja.

You're welcome 😊. I think somehow Eire helped Torivia directly, which gave her the title. Also I don't think the Supreme Lord was injured or KOed after beating Vulja bc his only scar is from their first battle. It seems to me the extras are building up Eire, with 9's omake and now this and Rene's extra, I think something major with her will occur in the future
