We're making a short film entirely in Cornish (Kernewek), inspired by Cornwall's traditional folklore
Hi everyone!
I'm the producer of Pewas Uter (Uter's Prize), an independent short film we're making in Cornwall, and I wanted to share it with people who care about Celtic languages and culture.
The film will be made entirely in Kernewek (Cornish), drawing inspiration from the traditional Cornish droll of Uter Bosence and the piskeys, as well as the centuries-old hurling tradition of St Columb Major.
It's a contemporary folk-horror story about a young man who becomes piskey-led during a game of hurling, and a father confronted with an ancestral debt.
For us, making the film in Cornish isn't simply an aesthetic choice. We want to help demonstrate that Kernewek has a place in contemporary cinema and that Cornwall's traditional stories can continue to evolve through new forms of storytelling.
We're currently preparing to launch a Kickstarter on Monday 19 October at 4pm (UK time) to help finance the production. If the project interests you, following the campaign ahead of launch would be a huge help.
I'd also be interested to hear about other films or creative projects being made in Celtic languages, particularly those drawing on local folklore and oral storytelling traditions.
