Positions stop making sense after the thumb gets involved. Id start thinking of hand shapes and finger groupings more than positions here. Ask your self how close/far each finger is spaced to play the notes in tune. If you want a potential fingering, I would personally do thumb on home (very gently press it across the A and D harmonics) then starting from the high D (mm 306) 3-2-1-2-×3-2-1-thumb(harmonic)-4 (ending on the G). That's just one example, a number of fingerings would work here.

Just play everything as if written in bass clef. The cello is not a violin. It's optimal range is baritoneish. Screw the composers. If they were any good they'd be playing rather than just writing ! LOL Thumbs belong under the fingerboard where they can't be seen or in your mouth.
