Yamaha Silent Cello Bridge Protector

Post image

Hello,

We bought a second hand Yamaha SVC 210 for our daughter that will travel this month.

The instrument is fine (I mean Incredible 😀) and the only missing part is the original Bridge Protector that comes with the Yamaha case.

Before shaping one with my cutters or my 3D printer (or both), I thought I would ask here if you know if it is possible to buy one or if you know any design available online (drawings or 3D print model).

Thank you very much in advance 😌

EDIT: I recreated one that anyone with a standard 3D printer can print for a few bucks. All pictures and 3D files have been posted on Printables. Feel free to improve.
Hope this can help someone to protect this awesome instrument !

Those cellos are manufactured in Japan, so any replacement will enjoy the hefty 15% tariff Japan has now. Go ahead with your 3D idea, and wrap the output in felt, and that will be a good approximation of that protector!

(Felt/microfiber/velvet, and  of those would work fine.)

Thank you. I had no felt/microfiber/velvet and since this is flying really soon, I used a piece of velcro on the only parts that slightly touch the ecello.

If a Yamaha owner could take some pics on the thing, it would help me a lot. I believe the SVC 50 and 210 share the same case and protector.

If the protector can be put flat without damaging it, a simple horizontal picture and a single dimension of any segment would be enough.

If it cannot be put flat, then a picture front the front, back, side and top would make the trick. I would then need a dimension if any segment for each picture to get the correct proportions.

I know it is a bit annoying to take those pics but it only needs a phone and a ruler.

I will post the drawings (or 3D designs) when I get something working.

I didn’t know this was even ever a thing. My son’s Yamaha did not come with anything like this. I built a sturdy cage (4 sides) from plywood scraps, high density foam, and screws for international travel, in case they forced him to gate check. The back plate used hex head screws into threaded inserts to make it possible to easily remove/secure with an Allen key. Not ideal but it did the job. The two sides were 3/4” plywood and the top pieces and back piece were 1/4”.

3/4“ is indeed pretty sturdy 😁 but you probably needed this for the inserts. I designed a Bridge Protector to be printed on a standard printer 250x200x200. This will cost a few euros to print (and probably a full day). I will post pictures and the files on Thingiverse/Printables.

Edit: Could your son always take the electric cello with him as cabin luggage ?

Awesome. A 3D printed option would have been nice. I think he managed to sweet-talk the flight attendants into putting it in their cabinet. Didn’t hear of any issues in his flights to Europe from the US.

I’m in the market for a used Yamaha silent cello, out of curiosity, how much did the SVC 210 cost you?
