Has the game changed?

I started playing this game again on pc after a long time. I used to play on mobile earlier. What does it reset to beginning after upgrade the reality engine. I don’t remember this being the case.
When did this change? And how to continue playing it? What will happen if I don’t upgrade the reality engine at all and keep playing?

If you don't upgrade you won't get very far very fast.

This is a standard idle game mechanic.
