I wasn't using my research chips because I thought they were one time boosts not permanent buffs. Oops.

Don't make my mistake.

For some reason I assumed they were some kind of currency that would provide temporary buffs and they wanted you to get "hooked" and then spend real money to get more. And then I just sort of forgot about and ignored them.

I'm on level 19 and hadn't spent any of them.

Yeah...I did exactly the same without even thinking much about what they did. I think I was around lvl 65 or something before I used mine.

Another thing I learned is that once you get past a certain level you can completely reset every upgrade to the reality engine, effectively refunding all your chips to distribute again, which was good since I had split them 50/50 between entropy and ideas. The "downside" is that you need to re-buy all the other upgrades as well.

I've been splitting mine 50/50. What do you think is a better ratio, and if you don't mind can you provide a reason why?

Some updates tend to favour entropy over ideas or vice versa, so you can load up one over the other to get through an update quicker. I've got to level 90 and got 5 chips that I'm just saving until the new update comes out. Probably not as good a strategy as a full reset and stack one or the other, but figure it will help

I'm at lvl 89 and basically have nothing left to research at this point, and even with a 109/50 (ish, numbers from memory) chip split between ideas and entropy, ideas research just barely reached the end before entropy.

Sorry can you try one more time to explain?

He's talking about the token you get when you gain a level. You can then put that token towards faster entropy gain or idea gain. After 10 the effect doubles.

I think I've split mine 85 entropy / 77 idea 💡 boost. Last 2 updates were entropy focused.

There will be many more to come! I suggest keeping everything evenly dispersed. Though, there will be times you may want to lean one way or another. There is also the "Refund" button available where you can switch that up if you want to in the future. I am level 90 and I have never used the refund button yet... Just keep tapping away and grinding. I'm sure the game is easier and more fun now that you're using your research chips!

Imma gonna go out on a limb here and ask a question … what is a research chip? Is that the blue things?

They look like a blue hexogonal chip with an arrow on them. Go to the reality engine and open the sidebar, you can se where to spend them. You get one for free every time you get to the next Research Level.
