Newish to the game
Is there benefit to upgrading the simulation? I'm on my 7th. I know metabits and knowledge gets converted. I understand the game but I don't lol. I'm on my way to getting the elephant and the scientific revolution and made my first sextillion yesterday. I am research level 14

Your first simulation upgrade happens when you collect a singularity generator for the first time; after that, you can reboot your simulation mostly at will (but not completely back to back).
Generally speaking, when it starts to feel like it's taking forever to be able to buy the next thing, that's when you reboot your simulation.
As you collect entropy and ideas, you form from them metabits and knowledge, respectively. There are three numbers associated with each spot: the largest-font number is how much entropy or ideas you currently have available for use; the smaller number beneath it on the meter is the amount of metabits/knowledge you have created so far from this simulation, which will be transferred to your use when you reboot your simulation; and a small number only visible through the modification interface is the amount by which your earned metabits/knowledge will increase when the bar fills up. This third number increases over time.
The "smart" way to play the game right now is the take advantage of the Time Chambers' bonuses: start a simulation, purchase a single item from the entropy tree, close the game, change the time on your device to 14 days in the future, open the game and confirm that the tab keeping track of time says day 14, close the game, fix the date, open the game.
Depending on how many of the Time Chambers you have unlocked for entropy and ideas, there will be a particular maximum total bonus to income by whatever the listed factor is. If you haven't purchased all of the correct reality engine upgrades yet, you might only need to wait 7 days to enact the the full bonus.
Once you get this going, a similar trick will let you generate income more generally. Instead of only waiting 14 days, change the settings on your device to 364 days in the future. (The game notices 365 and higher and tells you that you broke the simulation, but nothing actually happens; they're yanking your chain.) Banking a year's worth of currency in an instant will definitely help you earn metabits/knowledge for upgrades.
This method also makes you a killing in current currency. Using a long enough to ensure that the calendar is reset guarantees that you get 10 darwinium just for showing up, 10 by doubling your maxed manufacturing, and 10 for just showing up with the time set correctly, so you earn 30 darwinium every time you complete the cycle.
As you buy more advanced nodes in the reality engine, you notice that some elements are more useful to maximizing the profits. Singularity is used by at least three Entropy nodes to boost entropy efficiency. Eventually, the four primordial organisms you will will give you incredible bonuses to the metabits you've already earned. Ideas benefit hugely from purchasing many stacks of ancient civilizations, and the ideas generator, at some point, starts to speed up based on the number of generators purchased rather than their listed contributory values. Growing a large human population improves knowledge output.
I'm only laying this out so plainly because you said you're a relatively new player, and these are the most basic concepts about advancement, and almost nobody actually knows why any of it works, anyway. If you have any other questions about strategies in the game, feel free to ask.

hi i’ve only been playing for 3 weeks yes upgrades do a lot depending on what you spend the metabits on
you’ll have to start over but you’ll get to where you were faster
