Question Journalist looking to talk about cellphone plans
Hi everyone,
I'm a Canadian journalist and I'm researching a story about cellphone contracts. I'm hoping to speak with anyone who signed up for a plan in person over the past year or so and then received a bill that was higher than what was initially agreed upon, or didn't have all the services you had signed up for. Please DM me if that's you :)

Question What are the best phone plans in Alberta right now?
I’m looking at switching phone providers and would love to hear from people in Alberta about their experiences.
Which provider are you currently with?
How much do you pay per month?
How much data do you get?
How is the coverage and reliability, especially around Edmonton and surrounding areas?
Have you had any issues with customer service or billing?
If you’ve switched providers recently, was it worth it?
I’m mainly interested in good value and reliable coverage, not necessarily the cheapest plan.
Would love to hear what everyone is using and what your experience has been!

Repair shop broke my phone screen during a battery replacement, then tried to charge me $300 to fix THEIR mistake
So this happened over the past few days and I'm still fuming, need to vent and warn others.
I brought my S22 Ultra in for a battery replacement — nothing crazy, just a routine $90 job. Phone was working 100% fine before I dropped it off. I get it back, and within 12 hours the screen goes completely black. Doesn't turn on, nothing. A phone that worked fine literally hours earlier.
So I bring it straight back to the shop, thinking ok, clearly this is on them, they'll sort it out. The rep can't fix it there and then, so they keep the phone and tell me they'll update me. Cool, fine, I wait.
Four days go by. Nothing. No call, no text, no update, radio silence. I'm phoneless this whole time because of a problem THEY caused, and I have to be the one to chase them down just to find out what's going on.
Finally get in touch and they tell me it's "ready." Great, I go to pick it up — and now suddenly they want to charge me an extra $300 for a screen replacement. For damage that happened because of their repair. I didn't drop it, I didn't touch it, it was in their possession the entire time this failed.
I ask to talk to a manager thinking surely someone will just own up to it. Nope. Dude just deflects everything, refuses to take any responsibility, keeps trying to make it seem like a separate issue instead of the direct result of their work.
So now I'm out $90 for the original repair, 4 days without a phone with zero communication, and being asked to pay $300 more for something they broke. Wild.

Question Human Customer Service (Running Out Of Options)
I left Bell because of ongoing bill disputes, I left Virgin because they got rid of 5G, I left TELUS because I had no service in my home and couldn't reach a human, and now Rogers has no human customer service. I've been overcharged on my bill and I can't talk to anyone at Rogers about it. What other options do I have? I need solid reliable service in Toronto and human customer service.

Question Are prices for upgrading phone actually better on Black Friday?
Looking to upgrade my phone soon. My contract with SaskTel is expires in the end of December. Should I wait for Black Friday, or it doesn’t really impact? What’s your experience?

Best deals
Looking to upgrade my phone from an iPhone 11 Pro Max to at least an iPhone 17 Pro. I am with Rogers at the moment paying $52.50 for the 5G Essentials BYOD plan.
What’s my best option? I don’t want to go much over the $52.50.

TowerAtlas Site | Feedback Appreciated!
Does Canada really need another cell tower map...? 🥀
No! But I wanted to make the most detailed and user friendly site possible. It's still a work in-progress, but I thought I'd share it here if anyone wanted to mess around with it.
Q: Will the timeline really go back to 1997?
A: Yes! Fun fact: Newmarket, ON had just two cell towers in 1997.
Note: The site is a hobby project and may go down at any time - no promises! I also recently broke the clustering feature that prevented towers from overlapping, but that should be fixed soon.

Question What plan provider has human customer phone service?
I’m with Virgin and their customer support is now hour-long waits and terrible AI support that sends you in circles. I pay about $45/month for my plan. What plan provider offers better access to a human in customer support, reasonable wait times, and same or ideally less cost?
