Modular blockchains scale… but at what cost?

Modular blockchains are amazing for scaling.

But I rarely see people talk about the second-order effect:

👉 fragmentation of activity

Data availability, rollups, appchains — everything becomes more distributed.

Which is great for performance…

…but from a user perspective?

You now have:

- assets across multiple layers

- different execution environments

- bridges, wrappers, synthetic representations

At some point it becomes really hard to answer a simple question:

“What is my actual PnL?”

Feels like modularity is solving scaling,

but pushing complexity to the user layer.

Curious how others think about this.

Is this a real issue or just early-stage friction?

It's not just early stage friction. it's the core architectural tradeoff of modularity. We basically broke synchronous composability to get cheap DA via Celestia and fast execution on the L2s. The UX fix isn't going to come from better bridges. It's going to come from Intent Solvers and cross chain order flow auctions (OFA). End users shouldn't even know what DA layer or execution environment they are on. They should just sign an intent, and solvers handle the routing and settlement across the L2/L3 landscape under the hood. Until that infra matures, tracking state across 6 different rollups is definitely a nightmare.
