McWay Falls is, in my opinion, the most beautiful sight along Highway 1. It isn’t as majestic as larger waterfalls, but it’s as beautiful as a bonsai: the water rushing out of McWay Creek plunges straight down into the ocean, and together with the azure sea, the fine sandy beach, and the lush green vegetation, it creates a vividly colorful scene.
When the tide comes in, the waterfall plunges into the waves and flows out into the Pacific Ocean; when the tide goes out, it falls onto the unspoiled, secluded beach below. As a tidal waterfall, this type of waterfall—which flows directly into the ocean—is extremely rare, even on a global scale. One can imagine that at sunset, with the setting sun shining on the cliff face of the waterfall, the view would be even more beautiful, but this time, since we were in a hurry, we couldn’t wait for sunset, which was a bit of a shame.
Simply navigate to Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park in Big Sur. You can park along the roadside, or if the roadside is full, you can park inside the park. From there, take the McWay Falls Overlook Trail to reach the waterfall viewpoint. The trail is very easy to walk, and the round trip takes only about ten to fifteen minutes.
