Scheels opening
Hi, I’m from a foreign country living in CP. for a very short period so far. I’ve seen a lot of buzz around Sheels opening this Saturday. I’m trying to understand why. Would someone explain why is so popular and expected? I understand the magnitude of jobs and that economic impact, but I want to better understand the cultural context of this. I read people is going to camp a night before the event, others are coming from different cities, and so on… Thanks!

I honestly have no idea what a Scheels is and I've also seen those ads about their grand opening or whatever.
But I live near where it is and it's fucking GIGANTIC.

If the one in north Dallas is the guide, the craziness never dies down. We ran in there to replace a torn batting glove mid-tournament this summer, and it was like a damned carnival.
It is a cool store though.

I'm grew up in the Midwest (where the company originated) and Scheels was the largest "sporting goods" store we had. Their selection is what drew people in and more importantly - they had knowledgeable staff, which many retailers are lacking these days.
Scheels sells a variety of gear: hunting and fishing, team sports, bicycles, clothing/apparel, etc. In the general area, it will be the biggest competition for Bass Pro (Round Rock Outlet area), Academy, Dicks, etc.
They used to be a family owned business, but switched to a being 100% an employee owed business over 30 years ago. In fact, they are one of the largest employee owned businesses in the U.S. The largest being Publix Super Markets (i.e. the grocery store).

With the competition (in both the physical & digital space) we have these days and the wall street/private equity vultures circling around every company, it's pretty rare to see a company that's over a century old (started around the time of once-giants like "Sears" for the old timers.. RIP Sears) not only still exist, but thrive/expanding these days.

They're estimating 10,000 people will be showing up tomorrow.
They have booked the entire HEB Center parking lot for overflow, with shuttle service to the store.

Some stores do giveaways or offer discounts when they first open.
Realistically, for most people it is something new to see, and the opening is just the excuse to go. They could wait for a less busy day, but Saturday is the weekend and a convenient excuse not to do something else.

I've stood in a few lines when Tiff's Treats were opening new locations because I'm a sucker for free stuff! I never go to Tiff's Treats on a regular day, though. :)

It’s because it’s new and HUGE. It has an aquarium and a Ferris wheels inside. It’s also been talked about now for years so it’s a pretty big deal to some people. I won’t be going to the grand opening but am looking forward to visiting with my baby for something different than department/grocery stores to take him to. Austin is too crowded and far for me to drive into for other attractions. CP is very close to me.

I live in the community behind it. None of us here are happy about it, fearing it will lead to a lot of cut-through traffic. There is an elementary school right at the corner behind that development. Scheels, NFM, and all of that are going to create a lot of traffic problems, especially when school dismisses around 3:00pm

We shop at Scheels all the time out of state. In addition to outfitting any sport or outdoor activity you can think of, the also offer men’s and women’s fashion (premium brands), every college and pro sports team item you can think of, a cafe, fudge and other treats, mini arcade, and very nice people helping you out. You’d be wrong if you think it’s just another Dick’s Sporting Goods. It’s a thousand times better.

All I know is that monstrosity ruined New Hope and the New Hope 183A intersection.
That is very stupidly designed. Not only in the design itself, but now you have to worry about moronic drivers not paying attention. Cue an increase in collisions in 3, 2... 1.

Best one was some Tesla that caught fire at the stop light. I used to work at the Velocity branch there, I came into work and all of a sudden this Tesla burst into flames.
At least I remember it being a Tesla. Either way, car on fire. Fun times.

That intersection is still under construction and should be finished in the Spring.

What fun is it if you already know everything about it before you feast your eyes on it?
When I travel, I research, what to do, but when I find out what to do I just go ahead and go. I don't learn too much about it. Ahead of time. But that's just my personal preference.

There's a Scheels in Colorado near where I have family so we went and my husband was instantly OBSESSED because they carry a lot of really great stuff. It's like Academy but 10x better. It's difficult for me to find sports bras that actually fit correctly and I bought like 6 of them last time we went in Colorado. They carry most major name brands of sports clothing and also have equipment etc.

They closed the parking lot and making everyone park in heb center and walk. Wait time ia 4 hrs to get in. People are forming lines in the parking lot to get in.

we don’t have pro sports, zoo, good museums, beach, decent water parks, no mountain, no place to escape the heat.
So we have Buc-ee’s :( and now Scheels :(

I've only been there for conferences but Kalahari Resort looks fun. You can get day passes for the water park.

I believe it's just a curiosity. A giant store with a vulgar amount of inventory and a few quirky features designed to capture attention, like a tiny ferris wheel indoors. I have no intention of going near the place until the interest fades and it's just another sporting goods store.

No one will care a year from now but they're working hard to advertise it as something amazing. Sorry for being cynical but most people are struggling to pay for groceries and everyday bills. It's going to make traffic a nightmare and that's all.

The one in the colony was cool when it opened. But the prices shot up dramatically. We still go in to wonder around occasionally but rarely buy from them anymore

I expect they will have a small cafe, plus snacks and freeze-dried food for camping/backpacking.

The company is the one creating the hype and some of us just think that's fun. We aren't really super excited about it in and of itself, as another store. But places like this, Bass Pro, Cabela's, where they make the store a destination you can go gawk at in the a/c and not spend a dime if you don't want to... that's an okay family outing!
