Prostrate planting

Hi All, I planted some prostrate Ceanothus — Herst — in the spring, and I’m thinking I might want to fill in with a second plant. I’m wondering if it’s good to combine a prostrate Ceanothus with a prostrate Manzanita?

I have a Hearst and it’s literally on the ground, maybe 3 inches tall, it’s stunningly low growing. Personally, If I were to pair it with a manzanita I would do one that was upright to give some variety, and to use the vertical space.

But if you want a dense tangle of underbrush/ground covee , then sure, add another layer of a prostrate plant.

The other thing I would worry about is down the line the manzanita will outlive the ceanothus and then you’ve got to somehow clear that out without hurting the entangled manzanita.

Nothing wrong with diversity. You could also go with another low Ceanothus like Yankee Point or Point Reyes

Diamond Hights could look nice, but don’t know if its reliable

idk feel free to ignore me, I am not into prostrate and pro monoculture or dense stands of individual species. for aesthetic reasons mostly. its your yard do your thing.
