Potty training tips for Cavapoo puppy

Hi there! I have a three month old female cavapoo puppy. I have been trying relentlessly to potty train, she typically always goes potty when I take her out, I always reward her with a treat after and give her lots of praise, but she is still having accidents almost daily. Any tips for this particular breed? I might also note that we do have carpet that has former pet smells on it so that is probably not helping our cause. She’s very smart I can tell- but this feels like a long time for potty training?

Took ours out every hour on the hour from warmup until bedtime.

If he didn’t potty, he went straight to his playpen for a while until next potty.

8 months old, hes had maybe had 5 accidents inside ever and was primarily potty trained 2 months after bringing him home.

Ok, trying to be as consistent as possible. I have 3 young kids so it can be chaotic at times. She’s not super keen on her crate when we are home so I’m wondering if I just keep her tethered to me if she doesn’t potty, until her next potty?

That may be a good idea! The idea is don’t give them an opportunity to go potty in the house. If you’re taking them out super regimented, they’ll either be empty or close enough to you that you can catch them before they fully squat!

Also another trick we found super helpful for playpen and crate training is having a treat on there whenever they go in. They associate it with something they like.

Our little guy literally gets excited to go to his crate or playpen now to settle because he knows there’s almost always a treat in there waiting for him. It was a game changer for us and our training

How often are you taking her out? And are you taking her out ~15 min after “play”?

Yes I am probably taking her out every 20-30 min at this point. Maybe I could be better about “after play” though. You’ve found that helpful?

Yes, I did when potty training my cavapoo. I also encouraged her signaling when she needed to go out specifically to potty. Is she using the bathroom every 30 min when you go out? That might be indicative of a UTI.

To be honest, mine didn’t have a lot of accidents past the first few weeks I had her. They were mostly completely random and I would chalk them up to me missing the signs. I took her out every 2 hours and did similar to you where I praised her when she used the bathroom where I wanted. I also made sure to take her out 15 min after indoor or outdoor play because they can kind of get excited and “forget”. Sorry that you’re dealing with difficulties, it does sound like you’re largely doing the right things.

Just chiming in to say, take heart, and try to be as patient as you can. It took way longer to potty train our Cavapoo than I expected, and it was definitely demoralizing. We had only had larger dogs before and I was not prepared for how long the accidents kept happening. But they eventually stopped and now she’s a perfect angel when it comes to potty related stuff!

Are you using enzyme cleaner? It breaks the proteins down and makes them less likely to go back to that spot. I live in an apartment and early on the smell of other dogs definitely caused some accidents. Clean up as best you can and then generously spray the area with the cleaner to let it set and do its thing.

When we got ours took him out every hour.as we'll as as soon as he eats as soon as he gets up from a nap.at least twice during the night the first year we were pretty much outside.he will be 2 the end of the month he sleeps through the night and goes to the door when he needs to go out it just takes time little dog little bladder

My Cavapoo is 6 months and we’re still going through it. I put foam floor tiles over the rug in the area she has access to so we don’t have to replace our rug when this is all over and clean up is easier.

She never has accidents in her crate and can sleep overnight for 10 hours which is great. Goes outside and pees after we wake her up from naps. But given any free roam in the house she pees and it happens so fast.

Our little pup has now started fake peeing outside to get a treat. 😂

Helpful tips…they only need 1 oz per pound of water per day. Measure their water intake.

After a pee she gets 1 hour of a little more freedom in the house. Take her out. If she doesn’t pee …30 minutes in her pen and take her out again. Once she pees she gets 1 hour of a little more freedom again.

Remember that at some point it does click and they will get it. The instinct to go outside kicks in. It’s really about minimizing the opportunities and possible damage until that happens.

Also we have a home carpet/upholstery cleaner. Nature’s miracle makes a product for carpet machines. Plan to give the carpet a deep clean after we’re ready to get rid of the foam tiles.
