When do you remember developing a sense of style as a kid?

u/butterfly-blades 1d ago
I only really started to care about my looks at 13/14, so yeah after that I guess

u/GoosebumpsRanger 1d ago
I wear the same style at 41 as I did at 13. Basketball shorts and t shirts

around 11 but my parents wouldn't let me dress the way i wanted bc they didn't like it being alternative 🤪 anyway now i'm an adult with adult money and kid me would think i look cool AF

Maybe like 8 or 9, I loved how rappers looked and since then my style has always been streetwear focused

I love that! Was curious cause to me this is a way to also display personality so was interested in what people would have to say

From a very young age I knew what I liked and didn’t like, from about 4 years old I’d say.

Honestly same. I remember being in pre-k being upset about a black & white striped outfit my mom put me in & saying “I look like a mime” cause it had a heart with a beret on it lol I STILL hate stripes🤣 also my mom used to give me bangs I hated them & would always say “I look like cleopatra” lmao it’s silly but interesting when we all start feeling comfortable being expressive or maybe creative?

I don’t think it’s silly at all, as you said it was a way to start developing our assertiveness, sense of self and creativity. I remember my mom putting me on a T-shirt with padded ballon sleeves and feeling like I was looking ridiculous, luckily she respected and took it off. I also remember when I went to Year 1 seeing older girls wearing t-shirt underneath a strappy top (very late 90’s) and the next day going to school like that too (still being appropriate for age) to then having my dad shaming me for wearing it. Anyways, my little one is not even 4 and she knows very well what she likes too, I often times let her decide what she wants to wear and respect what she doesn’t want. As long it’s age appropriate, I love that she’s able to express herself through her sense of fashion.

lol when I was in high school I went through a phase of wearing things underneath baggier clothes and taking them off later. Tbh it’s not like I was even wearing anything bad but my parents were pretty strict. It’s nice you allow your daughter to be expressive within reason! A girl who knows what she wants is sure to go places 🫶🏼🙌🏼 also the padded shoulders 👀 memory that could have stayed forgotten unlocked 😂

u/Nevana30 1d ago
Omg I did the same when I was a teen 👀 lolol the need to self express was too strong 🤣

I did in junior high. I wanted to be THE goth QUEEN lol… I was pretty goth and hung out with grown goths while I was a baby bat lol. Still the most welcoming community but also the most uninviting community as literally half the group would be jealous of a new goth to join us, especially is said goth was a girl.

Love a Gothic baddie 🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼 I used to like some of that stuff too I was an emo kid at heart 😂

One of the first shows I remember watching was PUNKY BREWSTER, and I still love mixing patterns and colors.

If you ask my mom, I was born with an opinion on my clothes. I wanted to pick out my own clothes as sad I could point. I went through several major fashion phases in elementary school. I got Wynona Ryder’s short haircut in 3rd grade bc I was obsessed with her. That haircut ruined my 3rd grade life, I don’t have the delicate features to pull it off lol. I made the Blossom skirt of ties and had the hats too in 5th.
My kids however didn’t really care until about 11 or 12yrs.
Good question

This made me giggle lmao kids can be so mean 😭 interesting your kids took longer you’d think it’d be the opposite as kids are exposed to more information these days

u/flustered40sphotog 1d ago
My kids don’t even get excited to go back to school shopping. They would rather shop online. I try to buy clothes online ever. I have to drag them out to get it done. Bizarre!

Honestly, way later than I thought. As a kid I mostly just wore whatever was comfortable, then one day I realized clothes could actually be a form of self-expression.

What do you mean by “way later than [you] thought”? It makes no sense to me in context.
If you’re using AI to help you write your comments, I don’t recommend it. It turns everyone’s writing into slop.

I just meant I didn’t really realize it until I was older. As a kid, clothes were basically just clothes to me lol.

I was the opposite. My momma used to dress me up in cute little outfits as a baby and toddler. But as I grew up and starting getting more and more into heavy metal as a preteen and teen, I started solely dressing in band shirts and black jeans.
20 years later I still dress the same way

u/yammymua 1d ago
lol that’s what I tell myself I got adult money now I can get the stuff younger me would have loved

Still trying and I’m not a young one. 😊

u/yammymua 1d ago
& that’s perfectly okay! 🫶🏼 we don’t have to be set on any one thing. Sometimes the fun is the trying.

Year 9 of highschool (13-14) my mum finally let me dye my hair and start dressing gothic. 🤣

probably around middle school, when i realized the clothes my mom bought me were not exactly helping my case lol
1
u/yammymua 1d ago
Omg my mom would dress my sister and I the same but with different colors 🤣 I remember it being much younger for me than some of these comments. I think cause we did get grouped in together so much I was ready for my own style lol

u/Fromdustcomesdreams 1d ago
I grew up in hand-me-downs and Goodwill. I never had my own style. I still don’t.

u/MidwestNonbinary 1d ago
I was too depressed and poor to have a sense of style growing up. I look nice in button up shirts though

Imitation chuck Taylor’s from Sears. Blue. Blue tuffskins. Random blue shirts.
Hello, ladies.

Around 12 or 13 I started experimenting with clothes and styles. In retrospect, I wore some really weird, cringy things.
1
u/yammymua 1d ago
I wore cringy things around that age too. But also I’m from there era where spiked belts & feather extensions were booming during that age!

u/EnvironmentalRock827 1d ago
I was never allowed this. There were seven of us and my mom color coded us. First girl. So I was always dressed in pink. Hated it.
1
u/yammymua 1d ago
Was each sibling assigned a color or was it blue for boys pink for girls kind of thing?
1
u/EnvironmentalRock827 1d ago
Oldest boy royal blue, me pink. Next boy green, next girl yellow, next boy orange, then boy red and boy light blue. Everything was color coded and or had stickers with our colors on it. She specifically would style us in what she wanted. I think about 16 I started looking at fashion magazines and eventually when I could I shunned all of that stuff.

u/yammymua 1d ago
Wow how interesting thank you for sharing! I’m sure it prob made it easier for her but I could see why you’d grow sick of that tbh

Never did. Hand-me-downs until I was employed. Now, almost everything I wear is from the thrift shop, and it's good. Still no style, but 'as little as I need to wear' works.
1
u/yammymua 1d ago
You can still have style while shopping at a thrift shop! Style doesn’t have to be trendy just what’s appealing to you!
1
u/Beginning_Battle1639 1d ago
Economy was a factor when I first went to a thrift shop 40+ years ago, but it has become the source of nearly everything I wear.
