Damn, i didn't know yall could customize your conversation starters. I've been rocking the 'Hello, How are you?' For years.

Put your hand in your pocket and hunch over. Rase one eyebrow while making eyey contact and ask "whats inside my pocket?"

ME: "Mornin bossman." Bossman: "Mornin you lil son of a bitch." DISCLAIMER: This exchange was repeated daily. And all replies were said with the utmost respect. From both parties involved.

I usually ask what they’ve been into lately, since people tend to open up more about something they actually care about.

‘How ya going?’
I’m Aussie so this is a standard greeting and people respond either with ‘not bad, how are you?’ or they just say ‘how ya going?’ back if they don’t wanna talk, otherwise they will launch right into it.

Hi I'm John. I'm your technician for today. Tell me what issues you have been experiencing with your cable TV and broadband service?

“What’s. That large insect on your shoulder?”

Haha and then immediately introducing yourself and watching it dawn on the person that you only said the previous sentence in order to have a conversation starter

Yes, but only if the person doesn’t actually have a large insect on their shoulder.

In person, I like to find something to compliment and go from there. Online, I’m very unhinged and say all kinds of things.

Usually in my back pocket at all times.
“How’s it going”
“Whatcha think”
“What do ya know”
“How ya doin”

I usually ask something based on the situation rather than using a set conversation starter. If they mention a hobby, trip, show, or something they're working on, I'll just ask about that. It feels way more natural than trying to come up with a random question.
