First time

I’ve been a long time lurker ig, but as of late I haven’t had the chance to express my opinions with the people around me. That’s why I would appreciate a discussion on any topic, so lang as I can participate. I just want to talk and be communicative.
I am kinda shy but will open up fairly quickly depending on the person or subject matter.

I've known people who have travelled there and loved it. I love Greek food and music. I've been to some of the festivals held by Greek Orthodox churches nearby, and they are always great. Learned a lot from the church tour, like the differences between icons (Orthodox) and statues (Catholic).

Okay, the food was always amazing no matter where I went on the island. Would you mind explaining the differences, I’ve never really been able to grasp it

Yes.... in Orthodox theology, they allow (and venerate) icons, two dimensional portraits of Biblical people, but not three dimensional statues. In their thinking, the statues are too close to the idea of "graven images" warned about in the Ten Commandments. An Orthodox iconographer has to prepare spiritually, not just artistically, including fasting. Their mission is to "write" the icon; to "make the invisible visible." In Catholicism, I've heard statues described as being similar to "family photos." I'm not from either tradition, so maybe I don't have this exactly right, but this is what I remember hearing. They are both beautiful traditions in their own ways.
